Ratten was a line coach? I understood otherwise

My understanding was
Ratten - stoppages
Burns - midfield
Yze - forward
Glass - defenders
Monkey - rucks
Carroll - Head of Development

Assuming Newman takes Ratten’s vacant role.....where does Mitchell go?

Perhaps he’s off to Saints?

Why would the Club announce Newman and Bailey now if Mitch was coming? Timing it with Clarko announcement, like as succession?

Surely wouldn’t make a seperate announcement for him as an assistant, then why not wait and do it with Newman and Bailey?

Hi all, sorry to pop in unannounced.

Hawthorn assistant coach and former Carlton coach Brett Ratten has decided to leave the Hawks at the end of the season.

The club announced that after six seasons as a line coach under senior coach Alastair Clarkson, Ratten would explore other opportunities.
Unless Mitchell is getting a senior assistant job, which suggests a succession plan for a 50-year old Alastair Clarkson, I'd say you're out of the running.

At that point it's Clarko's ego vs Mitchell's development, so the easy circuit breaker would to just let Sam walk to another club for at least a couple of years.

Hopefully that club is Carlton, because we haven't had a decent midfield coach since Ratten! :(

You could be right. I can’t see any room for him.

Has it been announced that Newman will be the midfield coach?

Hodgey named up at the Legends of Hawthorn dinner I attended that Rats was a midfield coach, then went on to say what a coincidence it was that Mitch was moving back to Vic and was also a midfield coach.

Was wondering the same thing. The article from hawks site only says he’s an assistant, doesn’t give specifics. Why wouldn’t they say what the role is exactly? Wouldn’t rule out Sammy just yet.

Newman, senior coach of Box Hill’s recent premiership-winning side, will step into an assistant coaching role with Hawthorn

I hope Sam goes somewhere else - too early to return to the fold. Three more years with Clarko and then Sam will be ready.

In saying that, I was listening to a caller talk about the success rates of favourite sons and in the brief snapshot he gave, it wasn’t overly favourable

Agree but a lot of the time that's because they are hired just because they used to play for the club, not because they are the best person for the job (i.e. Hird whose only coaching experience was his daughters U/8's netball team). If and when Sam takes over he will be qualified and credentialed.

If Hawthorn Football Club want Sam Mitchell, and the feeling is mutual, then they’ll simply create a position and shuffle roles around with Boxhill.

If either of the first two assumptions prove to be incorrect then it won’t happen

Weren't Bailey and Newman already coaching with us in 2018 and Ratton has departed? That's an empty position somewhere just not at boxhill.

Also it's not like there is a set number of coaches that you can have.

Either way I'm not sold on the succession idea. Clarkson is the best coach in the game perhaps of all time and we must try to keep him as long as he still is. So unless Clarkson quits or we are bottom of the ladder we keep him.

If it becomes clear that he wants to leave we do the same process as when we hired him and find the best candidate based on the their experience, vision for the game. Etc...

I think Clarkson and his assistant that succeed have shown that.
