You raise an interesting point here that I have long pondered. The step change in how elite young AFL players are paid is a fascinating case study actually, and it’s a bit of a black box. I’m not convinced that the scenario you describe where a player is outperforming his contract by double towards the end of such contracts tends to happen too often.Yeah but they way he's going he could wait till he was out of contract and push for 800-1m a year. If he's signed this early, it's probably at similar rates to what his original extension is just because long term security at that age is valuable. Those last couple of years of his contract I reckon there's a chance he's out performing his money by like double.
This list is known to be wildly innacurate, it's all guessingYou raise an interesting point here that I have long pondered. Nowadays you can split a top AFL players career into two halves - the first 8 years, and the rest. Free agency happens after 8 years. For Jye that’s end of 2029 season.
The first 2 years are capped at rookie wages of $110k
Year 3 & 4, generally the first extension for these guys, is around $400 to $450k for players of Jyes level. Then the contract for years 5-8 (the same stage someone like Andy Brayshaw is currently in, a 6th year player) is maybe $550-600k
However, we know that according to last year and this years herald sun salary list, that Andy is earning $750-800k this year and last year. That contract was signed at the end of Andy’s third year. He hadn’t had a breakout season at that point - certainly wouldn’t have warranted a deal worth that kind of $$ in year 5.
Surely there must have been some kind of trigger Andy met to achieve the salary he (deservedly) is earning now in year 5 & 6?
And is it likely that Jye is the same.
For example, If Jye kicks 75 goals And wins the Coleman in 2026, surely he isn’t going to still be paid just $600k per annum from 2027-2029?

Doubles possibly overdoing it and maybe it's staggered to increase but generally, the longer the contract, the more of a discount the player takes for the added security. I imagine the idea of having a contract locked in till 2029 is very appealing and if that averages at 600k a year, a 19 year old can set up their life with that money. You raise an interesting point here that I have long pondered. I'd say it went a little bit like thisI see little reason for Freo to extend him out that far if it was to pre-emptively lock him in for 800k a season. Both sides are hedging with that deal. Maybe there is a bonus for something like winning a Coleman / AA to cover all bases
Bit of talk Roy Benning will be delisted at seasons end, hes still playing WAFL ressies most weeks and getting fairly average numbers unfortunately.Since the last time I mentioned him, has Eggs Benny improved enough or is he still ripe for the cutting?
Yes please....no brainer?Do you think with this and MJ extension we are gearing up for a long term offer to Darcy?

I hope he's not serious because if he is, it shows how clueless he is.
Maher has no idea. I agree that his first four would be in the top 5. I like Ginbey but no way he is top 5.I love you Andy Maher for taking attention away from our young KPF who is kicking 3 or 4 goals every other game
As good as Ashcroft has been, he has a huge advantage by playing in a midfield with the likes of Neale and Dunkley who attract a lot more attention than he does. And his numbers aren’t incredible by any means. He’s rated average in a lot of categories and only above average in disposals (22 a game). Meanwhile Sheezel is rated elite in a few categories, albeit playing an easier role.Maher has no idea. I agree that his first four would be in the top 5. I like Ginbey but no way he is top 5.
As at the moment my top 5:
1. Ashcroft
2. Amiss
3. Sheezel
4. Owens
5. Callaghan
Amiss isn’t far off pushing ahead of Ashcroft.
I also feel Owens is pushing up. Sheezel is good but seems to get a lot of cheapies across half back. Gave us a bath in round 2 though. Finn Callaghan is an impressive winger and there was a reason we tried to push up that draft. Imagine having Callaghan and Amiss.
So that top 5 can really move around before end of the year. For mine Amiss should be right in the mix for Rising star given what he is achieving as key forward.
Paul Hasleby didNot sure many of us saw a 40 goal season coming from him this year before the year started.
Awesome year.
