Actually a bit of a joke they're banning players from nominating terms

Jail was overlooked in the national draft - that garraunteed a 2 yr contract minimum if drafted.
He was overlooked in the rookien draft which was a 1 year contract.

Unlike most 18/19 year olds, he had a full-time job (not a casual job while he was at uni). The afl would have rathered he gave that up with certainty he would get a game, and no certainty on his future.

And the media won't say a word about it

Was about to post something similar. It just amazing at how incompetent the AFL admin is. It is an absolute clown show from top to bottom . From the stand rule, ruck nomination, umpire dissent , protected zone rules and of top of it they have completely destroyed Grass roots football. They are a disgrace. And its crap like this that we will regret the day Jeff is cancelled cos at least he has the balls to stick up to them. Im sure a country lad undergoing an apprenticeship who asked to be paid for 3 years if he got drafted to justify the risk in leaving his job is on the top of the AFLs priority list to change.

Struggling to understand why this was a problem. A bigger issue was kids being taken and then cut six months later (especially those moving interstate). Peak AFL.

It goes against how they perceive equalisation, don’t give a leg up to clubs they don’t want to have one, remove it and it levels the playing field but only damaging the player who hasn’t even got picked up yet to begin with

They'll take the perceived welfare of clubs over the real world welfare of players every day of the week, when it suits.

Even if it was all just a ploy to try and get him with our second rounder, there was nothing stopping another club from picking him with their first rounder. It's not like the contract terms were outrageous for the player he immediately showed he was - not could be, was. Anyone who picked him on his nominated terms would have still scored a bargain.

Really just comes down to all these other clubs being too chicken shit to not take a chance on a kid if it wasn't on minimum chips for 6 months, rather than pay him what he's worth and deserves - which again, is still more than we are currently paying him.
One point that is being sorely missed here is that the HFC really need him. It's not like the kid ended up at a team that was having a down year that is likely to be back in the top 8 any time soon.

It's also funny that the team with the most exclusive access to talent is the one that whinged about it.
The one that had Kieran Jack arrive on their list out of thin air one summer.

They protest loudly at everything. Bloody everything.

They know they are on a wonderful wicket and have to keep on doubling down in case anyone calls for the academy rules to be changed.

Its pure projection.

I'll be dirty about that loss for a while, but what really amazes me is how this bloke has only played 15 games and is comfortably leading our midfield! I know some will see that as a slight on our midfield, but I am genuinely in awe of how good Jai is. You could slot him into Melbourne's midfield and he'd still be getting noticed. If he was pick 1, I'd feel we nailed the pick.

He's probably become my favourite player since Hodge left.

Absolute. ****ing. Star!

Back to Jai. Kangas spent no. 1 pick on JHF who looks terrific but our bloke has very very similar attributes and we got him for a steal.
I can see parts of his game where he’s got the brute strength to break tackles and get a clean disposal, and if he can start doing that forward of centre and hitting the scoreboard we’re going to have a cheaper version of Petracca in our side.

Must have broke 5-6 tackles and had 2-3 fend offs. Each time he draws a man it makes space for the outside and we cut them up with his ball use.

Shame the others didn't turn up or we would have walloped them.

Yeah the commentators prattle on about how JHF holds his own against more seasoned players and is so competitive and obviously hates losing any contest. Nuke is doing exactly the same and yet he hardly rates a mention. So many times last night he won the ball, broke the tackle with a fend off and then got the disposal off to a teammate.

Very good young player. I did laugh when he tried his very best to shrug off a tackle in the last q by trying to slinging him over his shoulder . Didn’t work , but it was indicative of his will. Yes he is going to have to work through getting tagged/ attention.

Is pretty much our best midfielder now, which tells a pretty bad story

Can we find 4 more of him?
Was thinking the same thing today, how much (well more) trouble would our midfield be in if we hadn't of pulled Duke out of nowhere in the MSD!

You would have to think that given the last two years of covid affected junior footy there are more 19/20 year old diamonds to be unearthed in this year's MSD as well.

I know this is unlikely, but I would have thought Duke winning the Rising Star would be an absolute fairy tale and absolutely brilliant for AFL media. It's a rags-to-riches tale, a kid who didn't go through the professional pathways who came from nowhere to win the RS. 1/ It's far more interesting that a number one draft pick getting the award (which should be expected); and 2/ It encourages people to never give up on their dreams of AFL, potentially increasing the quality of the league in the long term.

If I was in the AFL I would be pulling every string I could to make sure he gets the award.

The only thing stopping him is he plays for hawthorn 😂
