What's the injury?

Copped a knock to the head in the last. Tried to get out of gear but must have been pretty significant to keep a tough bugger on his haunches for 30 minutes.

Any further details? Concussion?

Don't think so as he was back out on the field pretty short after. Happened early in the quarter and was a bit slow to get up.

Think the issue of his fade out is probably more to do with the fact that he is a few preseasons behind other 20 year old kids + the fact we didn't have a ruckman for the first 15 minutes of the quarter while Draper belted it out away from the coalface.

Thanks. Jai is carrying a massive midfield load at present. Reckon real risk of him burning out as a lot of footy ahead over rest of year

I know this is unlikely, but I would have thought Duke winning the Rising Star would be an absolute fairy tale and absolutely brilliant for AFL media. It's a rags-to-riches tale, a kid who didn't go through the professional pathways who came from nowhere to win the RS. 1/ It's far more interesting that a number one draft pick getting the award (which should be expected); and 2/ It encourages people to never give up on their dreams of AFL, potentially increasing the quality of the league in the long term.

If I was in the AFL I would be pulling every string I could to make sure he gets the award.

Martin and Duke are 1 and 2 easily for me right now. Daicos third. Both Nic and Jai would be incredible, fairytale winners.

However, it should come as no surprise when Daicos ultimately wins it, because confirmation bias will run rampart and we can't have 2 mature aged players picked from state leagues in the MSD or SSP triumphing over a top 5 father/son selection.

There's new way that Newk wins the Rising Star.

It's a popularity contest, and we don't have the Hawks fans in media positions on morning radio, in the HUN wherever, pumping up our players tyres.

I'm happy for him to win a PCM over any popularity contest ran by AFL house.

If Jai keeps wracking up 30+ possession games most weeks he will win the rising star in a canter.

It's both a blessing and a curse for Jai that we have such a weak midfield though.

Blessing is he will get plenty of opportunity to be the number 1 alpha dog in the middle which will accelerate his development but curse is this will take a toll on his body.

Mind you I don't ever recall seeing a 20 year old with a build like Newk though, he is an absolute unit.

Buckley likes him a lot as well …… the way Jai goes about it is starting to get noticed. Having said this talking to non Hawk mates of mine they still don’t know who he is could be a little bit of that Hawk envy shining through 😄

Just the 1 disposal in the last quarter on Saturday night. Was he tired, or was he another feeling the effects of the virus that took Lewis and Wingard out of the side?

Tom, Worpel and Newk with a total of 3 disposals in the last on Saturday night. That just doesn’t happen.

Newcombe only had the 6 touches in the second half, was a clear drop off not just in impact but his running.

Was really hoping for a signature game.

They can help catapult the media narrative. If he won it north of 35 times with over 600mgs he would become favourite. I fear that he will need not only consistency but some real blockbuster performances to move past daicos and Martin.

I've got a Dees supporting sister who watches Hawks games sometimes, including the two most recent - didn't know who Newcombe was when I mentioned him last night. I was a bit shocked but made me realise that he's still under the radar, somehow. Then again, I have a longtime friend who's always said he was a Hawks supporter (admittedly footy isn't a big passion of his). I invited him around for a game about 3 years ago and he asked who a certain player was (Burgoyne). Even worse his young son had got the bizarre idea into his head that the Hawks got rid of Hodge because he was a cheat. Silently gobsmacked in all 3 instances. 🤣
