Welcome to Richmond Troy Chaplin (Port decides not to pursue offer)

Not sure what's been going on here but haven't we recruited this guy to stand Petrie and Cloke etc. Tough job.
Here's my view.
Considering Petrie started towelling Tross up in the last quarter in that match late this year and all Dimma had to turn to was Post or McGuane, I would say Chaplin is a massive coup and a major upgrade on Post or McGuane already.
Had we been able to stop Petrie in that last quarter we would have won that game.
It's all about getting players in who can turn the 7 losses by 12 points or under (I am counting the Port draw) into wins. Not all of them because some close losses are inevitable, but turning 7 of those losses into 3 or 4 wins would have seen us playing finals.
Chaplin is no star. I think anyone with some semblance of a brain realises that. If he was, Port would have matched the offer and we would be going to the trade table and having to give up something of importance.
Not every decision Hartley is going to make is going to turn out to be a masterstroke. But so far he has given me no reason to doubt his motives or his research and knowledge.
Four years is one year too much for my personal liking, but three years wasn't going to get him over. Port would have offered three (even though they said two). When you want players from other clubs, you need to offer more than what they will. That is fact. So be it.
So far Hartley has identied Grigg (5th in our B&F this year and 13 Brownlow votes), Maric (nuff said), Houli (very serviceable ball user and won't really come into his own until Newy retires) and Morris (nuff said). he identified Knights and Chaplin and we went and got the job done and gave up nothing in the process.
People can criticise the Chaplin selection all they like. It is their right.
But at least wait and see how he fits in to our team before going with all barrels loaded.
I have no reason not to trust Hartley based on what he has delivered so far.
Like I said. Our time is coming very, very soon. We are on the verge of something truly magical and I want you all to enjoy it as much as I will.

Have my reasons

I've been happy to let it rest until people started having a crack at me when they've misunderstood my post/s. I'd be happy to not say another word about Chaplin for at least a few days :footy:
Like I said, I have also asked other posters to lay off you as well. But it works both ways.

Apart from maybe the odd poster, I don't think too many are wetting themselves over Chaplin specifically as a highly rated FB or CHB. Most of us just see him (his total package) as a vital piece to the puzzle that is our total defensive unit. I haven't followed his career as such, but have certainly seen him play many games. Regardless of how others rate his performances for Port over the past couple of years, he doesn't have major flaws. Kicking technique is fine, generally makes good decisions, especially when it comes to marking/spoiling. The main thing is, he will complement our other defenders well, with his size and, in particular, his experience.

Welcome aboard Chappy :thumbsu:
nice summation DD

Too much sense tugga, hand in your badge .... :D

I have faith in Hartley, but all of his recent pick ups (Houli, Grigg etc) have not had any injury concerns; both Knights and Chaplin have question marks in this area.. I know we haven't given up much to secure their services, but I've got a horrible feeling that our fairy tale recruiting run won't last forever.

yeah your right, but it only has to last 3 years for us, not forever..;)

Still yet to be convinced how good Chappy is gonna be. Isn't really talked about in terms of the comps great defenders, but he definitely fills a need of ours so should go alright. The Petrie call by Tugga is spot on.

I know one thing for sure though is that cartilage repairs on knees can be very tough to come back from (have had it done), and if he hasn't got it right, or its a bad one or in the wrong spot, he won't be all that mobile and its gonna degenerate quickly under the load of running an AFL player has to do. Sure we've done our due diligence and probably just sour grapes from Port, but got a bad feeling about a 4 year deal..

Stig, anyone have any feedback on the results of his surgery?

Hartley, Dimma and Chocco must see something special in Chaplin if they are prepared to offer 3 years and a 4th on performance. They obviously think he has an untapped upside.

People who are still unsure should cast their minds back this time last year and that good ordinary plodder Maric, who will be a good fill in until we can get a real ruck, and even include the mature age novice nobody wanted except Hartley and Co, Morris.

The problem is we Tiger supporters have too many years of recruiting staff not knowing any more or better than us. This competent persons doing their job scenario is just going to take some getting used to!!!!

Bringing in Chaplin will be worth it next year when we may trade one of our kpd for possible a first round draft pick. spots are gonna be tight next year.

I agree with this.
Having Chaplin allows he and Rance to alternate between the gun forwards. If, say Hawkins, is giving Rance a bath, then we can turn to Chaplin. Like I said, when Petrie started reaming Tross, we had McGuane or Post to turn to. Uh oh! Game over. No plan B.
What this also allows is Grimes (when fit) to play on the 3rd tall. Jesus, if it's good enough for Scarlett and Fletcher to be playing on the 2nd and 3rd talls late in their careers, then by christ I think it's good enough for a kid who hasn't even played 20 games and is trying to get his body right.
It also allows Batchelor and Griffiths to be swingmen. Batch can play tall or small (I am an unashamed fan of this kid, though).
Morris plays on the small.
Having Chaplin rounds it off nicely. We have the most inexperienced backline in the comp. Now we have something we can work with and something that puts our structures along similar lines of the most successful sides of the past 10 years.
Getting Chaplin, on face value, might not seem like a huge get. But what it does is address need, which is Hartley's philosophy right from the start. See a hole, research it, address it. Hey presto!
The problem is we Tiger supporters have too many years of recruiting staff not knowing any more or better than us. This competent persons doing their job scenario is just going to take some getting used to!!!!
It is a foreign concept for sure.:D

You obviously have not seen Chaplin play during the last 3 years. His disposal is poor and his decision making leaves a lot to be desired. Plus he is not the answer if you are expecting him to play one on one against the gorillas in the AFL, e.g Cloke, Petrie and so on. Anyhow a change of scenery might do him good.

Bodywise he should be cut-out to be a capable full back, but the bloke is an absolute peaheart. Glad to be rid of the spud.

Attitude is also a worry, abused Port fans while walking off for the halftime break against Freo.

Good luck :thumbsu:
Wrong forum?

Surely this crap should be reserved for Bay13 or the Port board?

A lot of Richmond supporters say exactly the same about Rance, and that is a footy myth as is with Chaplin.

As of round 14 this year, players who had in excess of 100 kicks were rated by Champion Data`s "Hit Rate" measurement, which rates AFL players on the percentage of kicks that hit the target based on the degree of difficulty of the kick. Much better than the basic DE%, and surprise, surprise, surprise have a look who is the number 28 on the list, none other than Ports alleged worst kick in the comp, Troy Chapman who just happens to be well ahead of Richmonds best by foot Newman on 46.

I know there's been some posts deleted, and I can understand if MisterMarto is angry about any jibes made at his club. But in fairness, there have been just as many supporters sticking up for Port and their supporters throughout the thread, as there have been knockers. And it is the Richmond board. Geez, if I had a dollar for every time our club was potted on another board... Oh boy, wowee! I'd be rich.

MM was just having some fun (have a look at his Bay history if you're not quite sure).

It's not crap.

If you can turn his attitude problem around, he may yet be serviceable, but don't delude yourselves into thinking he will be a star.

Naaa..we have stars where it matters dude...btw, which FB in the whole comp would you label a star? Good luck with that...the problem with his attitude IMO stems with the problem with your culture that was exposed when you knifed a club stalwart who bled for the club, in the back, when you "dumped" Primus.
With all due respect, to suggest that our recruiters didnt take into account "his attitude", or didnt do their due diligence on why his attitude turned to be a problem and then come out and offer him 4 years to get him tot he club, is bordering on the moronic..
I mean do you actually think about the whole scenario that is going on at tigerland? Choco? maybe? Hey Choco, now that you are on our pay roll, whats the go with Chaplin's "attitude"?...naaa...so please spare us the total and utter BS attitude shit. Your club as whole was turning to shit, we know all about attitude problems and why they occur when a club is turning to shit...we have been that for a decade and a half..
