Watched 3/4 of the WA' 16s game, difficult to work out who was who due to no commentary, but many thanks for that 16s list provided by Redman.....thought Dennis(25) looked good up back, Le Cras (5), Nathan(11) , Clarke(1) through the middle, Omerod(35) with a couple of goals up forward, and as mentioned WA two talls in Ramsay(32) & Walsh(39).

Out of interest, Ramsay going on that DOB 9/1/07 - that makes the kid nearly 17.5 years old.....how is he playing in a 16's comp?....is it 16 yrs old at the beginning of the comps year?

He's the kid that was discovered in a WAFL bigman talent search day. Was playing soccer and rugby before that. A few weeks later he was playing his first competitive football and was shortly at East Fremantle for a couple of colts matches.

Probably hasn't played more than a handful of football matches so was given the special permission to play state 16's.

Good progress so far.

Great story indeed, hopefully the youngster can continue to develop.....did some good things during the game, obviously still very raw.

Fred Rodriguez.

Not bad for a guy once named an Auskicker of the round circa 2014.

BONUS!

Matt Whitlock (2024) also AOTR nominee same year.
While many many players are making their mark and moving up the rankings..the player that concerns me is Basil Hart (PT). He's not firing a shot and I'm starting to wonder if he will.

Bit like Jake Boniwell mate.....though at least Hart is playing colts I guess. Hopefully Boniwell starts playing colts, once the PSA is finished.....or perhaps just isn't invested enough to want to.

2025 Draft player focus. The best list WA have had for quite some time although I guess a lot can change. It was already a good 16's squad last year but more players are emerging almost on a weekly basis.

Forwards (in no particular order)

Harrison Heaton (SF) 193cm A highly rated and very mobile medium/key forward who has had some injury problems in 2024. As long as he gets his body right he should be a colts star. Great mover for his size and very good in front of goal.

Wesley Walley Jnr (S) 181cm+ Perhaps the most naturally gifted player in the WA list for 2025. He can kick goals from just about anywhere and his leap at the marking contest enables him to be far more than a "small" forward. Just needs to put together 4 quarters of brilliance instead of one. Maybe even 2 quarters is enough to be a match winner.

Koby Evans (P) 187cm Was a surprise selection as a below ager for WA this year and has shown flashes of brilliance and an amazing somersault - kicked a few snags and now that he is in the state program, one would expect this Indigenous talent to get better and better.

Joshua Nomlatyu (EF) 197cm Can play ruck but it's up forward where he looks best suited. Of South African heritage - he is tremendously agile at ground level and his left boot is sound. Once he gains strength and more experience will be hard to stop.

Max Skerritt (SF) 185cm A medium forward who was a star at 16's level. Has been quietly chipping away at PSA level and looms as a potential state player in 2025.

Darcy Montgomery (S) 191cm One of the most unusual styled players I've seen for a while. Very left sided, incredibly mercurial. Kicked six goals against Vic Country for WA in the 16's championships in 2023. One of those players that is fun to watch and can change a game in 10 minutes.

Basil Hart (PT) 185cm Highly rated all around Australia and from memory an All-Australian U/16. Played one excellent game this season when seconded to a wing. Waiting for him to find damaging best form around the big sticks.

Judd Marcello (WP) 192cm He is having a great season with West Perth and currently sits second of the goal scoring table with 19. Strong overhead for a player of his height, leads well, finds space in small gaps in the forward 50 and usually finishes well.

Jake Boniwell (EF) 190cm An incredibly talented forward (mainly) who really needs to get himself in peak physical condition to make a play for the state 18's squad in 2025. Searching left boot - and when fit very powerful at ground level and in the air.

2025 List in focus (cont'd)

The one area where I can't see WA depth.

Ruck

Joshua Nomlatyu (EF) 197cm (see previous post)

Cooper Ramsay (EF) 200cm Discovered in a recent "WAFL tall player talent search". New to the sport having previously played soccer and rugby. Very raw still but shows natural athletic traits and so has been given an opportunity to represent WA at the national 16's championships as an over ager.

Frazer Rickson (S) 196cm Will potentially be converted into a key position player in 2025 but for now he is a ruckman and one of the few in his age group over 195cm. A bullocking, effort style player and it's his work rate and competitive attitude that impress. Must fine tune his kicking technique to take his game to the next level.

2025 List in focus (cont'd)
Note- I've had to guess some of the heights as they haven't been updated since May 2023.
Backs

Noah Midani (PT) 190cm Close checking no-nonsense defender with a strong pair of hands and good timing with his spoils.

Jimmy Aylmore (S) 192cm A slightly built but very athletic key defender who starred for WA in the 2023 national 16's championships. Each time Aquinas have had the bye, seemingly, so has Subiaco but is a chance to make his colts debut this weekend.

Oscar Willis (CL) 189cm+ Reliable intercept defender and rebounder somewhat in the style of Monts team mate Clancy Dennis - although listed at just 187cm......I'm guessing he's at least 189cm now. Will be a key player for WA in 2025 and has gained experience being in the academy program this year as a below ager.

Rhys Hards (WP) 185cm+ Noted for his vigour, rebound and long clearing kicks out of full back and out of danger.

Matthew Petagna (EP) 188cm Tough uncompromising defender who impressed a lot of bigfooty scribes during the 2023 national 16's championships. Has mainly played PSA this season.

Taj Longmuir (SF) 182cm Very much an accumulating back who uses his accurate left foot to set up his midfielders.

Cody Curtin (CL) 197cm Agressive, raw, desperate defender known for his strong marking and decisive spoiling. Should develop significantly between now and the 2025 draft.

Dale Sutherland (P) 187cm+ Strong marking defender who plays much taller than his advertised height listing. Already has a best on ground performance for Perth this season although he spends most weeks playing for Guildford Grammar in the PSA.

Jake Caton (EP) 184cm Nephew of former WAFL/AFL player Kevin. A dashing, exciting Indigenous talent who has gained confidence - not just in his kicking but also his ability to run and carry in 2024.

Max McCullough (S) 188cm+ A medium tall desperate defender who uses the ball well and was outstanding in his long awaited colts debut on the weekend. Can match up on talls but has the mobility to run with smaller forwards. Has been missing in action for a while for reasons unknown but did make the WA state 15's side in 2022.

2025 List Focus (cont'd)

Mids (in no particular order)

Will York (PT) 172cm A star at U/16 level for WA. Brave and always looking to hunt the ball despite a lack of height. There are always question marks about players who are in the 170-177cm range. That's the modern way and it can't be ignored but pound for pound he is a very good footballer.

Fred Rodriguez (SF) 185cm Has already shown that he can compete against older players at the national championships. Knows how to find the ball, kicks both feet, has the size and strength to go toe to toe with strong mids and must be a very good chance to be selected in the 2025 AFL 18's Academy.

Luke Carrello (EF) 177cm+ Possibly taller than 177cm now, Carrello is a well balanced right footer who has filled a few roles for the Sharks but looms as a out and out mid in 2025.

William Tilbee (P) 181cm+ A genuine bolter who has impressed with his attack on the ball, courage and impact on matches. Still raw and skinny but he has tremendous upside because of that. One to keep an eye on although he is probably considered a speculative pick at the moment but I really like watching him play and I hope he continues to improve and catch the eye of a few others.

Toby Whan (SF) 182cm Silky smooth left footer who can create space for himself in places where there would appear to be none. Not sure if his best spot is on the inside, a wing, hovering around half forward or mopping up at half back. Hopefully he spends most of his time on the ground on the ball.

Cooper Bewick (WP) 172cm Another player who may suffer simply because he is short rather than anything he has done wrong. Has the pace and slickness of the Bewick boys Darren, Corry and Glenn and it's nice to see him play up the ground rather than solely in a forward pocket.

Jadd Hill (P) 180+ Was quite small in U/16's for WA last year but still had a major impact. Is taller now. Probably taller than what I'm listing and far taller than what is advertised on his profile page. Fiercely determined left footer who can be relied upon to compete at the stoppages and more often than not will get first hands on the ball. Set to be a star for WA in 2025.

Luke Hallett (EP) 184cm A prolific and damaging player whether that be in PSA or colts. Made a rare appearance for the Royals last week and gathered 27 disposals. Just knows where to position himself a split send before his opponents at stoppages. He has moved up the list quickly.

Blake Kelly (SD) 182cm Has done well as a mid for WA in the 18's this year. A tough nut and the kind of player that coaches will really value although he may not instantly catch the eye of observers. Often does the team things that can go under the radar.

Very much looking forward to watching what this group can do next year

2025 List Focus (cont'd) Final part

Utility

Charlie Cossom (CL) 173cm Not sure if he will be a small forward, high half forward, wingman or a player who could slot into the mids. Small in stature but as a below ager let's give him the benefit of time. Has those same zippy fast twitch fibre qualities of older Claremont team mates William Hayes and Cody Angove.

Marcus Cassidy (EP/PSA) 188cm+ A little surprised that he didn't make the WA 18's squad this year, if for nothing else to get him in the program. Big and strong for a midfielder who can play forward. Not as robust as Luke Urquhart but I have a feeling he might turn out to be similar player - maybe less agressive but with better footskills.

Matthew Becker (PT) 190cm A long legged, fast athletic player who was excellent for WA in the 16's as a key defender. This season he made the WA state 18's squad and has been tried on a wing mainly. Maybe that is the way to get the most out of his natural athletic abilities but he really hasn't impacted colts this season at all. I'd like to see him utilised as a true utility. Sometimes in defence, sometimes on a wing or up forward and then next year an occasional run in the centre square.

Jacob Farrow (WP) 189cm+ Very reliable quarter back style defender with a trusty left footy. Although he has been used in a variety of positions and with his height (and I suspect he will get taller) he may become a key defender, key forward or outside mid.

Lochlain Carpenter (WP) 193cm+ Has recently been used up forward and looked very comfortable although he also showed some dour qualities as a shut down defender. Not the most stylish or co-ordinated big man (at this early stage) with ball in hand/on the run but gives immense effort, has a strong pair of hands and with that, plenty of upside.

Dylan Prance (S) 183cm+ A total effort player. Stands out with his red hair so he does get noticed. Looks like a natural defender but my feeling is that he will become a bash and crash mid with a spell in front of the big sticks in 2025. The only question is will he be considered a little too "vanilla" for the AFL. But if a recruiter wants comittment, look no further.

Charlie Banfield (CL/PSA) 187cm Big enough to play as a medium marking forward but is strong enough to go on the inside and go toe to toe at stoppages. Also athletic enough to spend time on a wing. Impressed in glimpses at the national championships for WA and his progress appears to be strictly on the up.

Sam Swadling (WP) 188cm+ One of the classiest players in the 2025 group. A super slick, tallish smooth mover who is a joy to watch either in the mids or up forward as a goal kicker. The best thing is, he also combines those natural skills with genuine passion for the contest. Could be a top 3 for WA by next season.

In summary, from what I can see WA has at least 50 players who are serious contenders for the state squad in 2025. There will be some unlucky players no doubt. This time last year I wondered if there would be 20 contenders for the 2024 18's squad. It has turned out somewhat better than that thankfully.

If you look through the top 50, a key factor is that the names are spread over all clubs with a variety of styles, heights and options.

I feel as though WA will as usual have to find/select an over age ruckman to fill the squad out.

So I can't see many below agers being included - not because they aren't good but because there isn't room. My best bets are Lucas Robinson (SF), Kye Ormerod (EF), Damien Newry (CL), Leo Steed (SD) and Koby LeCras (WP). But these are early days and I have only seen 10 or so of the 2026 group.

I hope people over east acknowledge this and give the players due attention.

In fact, for once, I'd be somewhat disappointed if WA didn't win the championships.
