Fair to say finishing bottom 4 next year is a real possibility

We are better than Adelaide, brissy, GWS, Melbourne, Saints and the Bullies. On par or thereabouts with Carlton, Bombers GCS, Port, Geelong and Richmond.

A solid season & 1 derby win should see around the 6 to 11 mark (likely 6th).

Hopefully the older boys are excited about the coaching changes and ready for one last challenge. Missing a ruck coach, but not sure what a ruck coach can teach Coxy or Nic Nat.

i just dont see how thats possible..am i missing something..the honeymoon period of coaches, players and tactics perhaps keeping us in a bit of a limbo for some of the season..but not necessarily a slide.. i dont consider myself a blind one eyed loyal fanboi, but i do see some real positives for a bump up the ladder next season from a reinvigorated club..maybe wishful thinking..

i'm not saying finishing bottom 4 wont happen, stranger things have happened (like finishing where we did last year),but i'd be disappointed..i'd hope we would have a late season surge as we start to click as a unit, and finish in a respectable position..admittedly theres a lot of contenders in the middle of the pack trying to force their way up,should be some congestion outside the 8..promises to be an exciting season..

but i believe we have a good list, with old and young talent aplenty (apart from 1 more class midfielder).. what may stand out,is what a new coaching panel brings out of our list..showing just how much the boys had slumped under woosha..although i guess thats obvious already..i guess i'm expecting a big and noticible change!?

The fact that Hickmott was already involved in the club would have helped his cause. With such a massive turn over of coaching staff we certainly needed some familiarity there. A completely fresh group would have worried me. Good Luck to him.

Seeing as we'll probably be using our first round pick on Alec Waterman, it doesn't matter where we finish really.
Finish low enough we might get him as a second rounder?

Back handed optimism

We dont have a bottom 4 list. But im not a fan of hicky. No idea of him in our setup but just thought he was a shit of a player at carlton.

Is this code for, "we promoted internally because we couldn't attract a qualified external candidate"?
Really hope not... Would have liked to get Bassett as backline coach, appears to have a lot of the tools required.

You would hope a club like ours could attract several qualified external candidates, however it may be that we left our run a little late and decided to settle with what we have for 2014 to reassess at the end of next season?

May I make three points;
  1. It is difficult to evaluate assistant coaches if you do no see the working with players close up and know aht role they are being selected for.
  2. We should not rate coaches on their playing ability - one day coaches will not be ex players as the game becomes more professional
  3. It is a real hurdle attracting people to Perth - isolation, out of the mainstream AFL industry and plenty of jobs on the east coast with out these drawbacks

Would love if we could get him into training part time with our seniors, ala McDonald at Norf this year, and speed up his knowledge of the gameplan/set-ups/etc.

So

Head Coach - Simpson (Worsfold)
Strategy etc - Pyke (Walsh)
Forwards - Longmuir
Mids - B Rawlings (Burns)
Backs - Hickmott (Teague)
Development - Bell, Graham, Selwood and +1 TBA

Have I missed anyone?

Thats a huge turnover of coaches - those who wanted some new blood have certainly got it. Fair to say we'll have a new gamestyle next year
Just on A Selwood, what is he like with the young kids? Is he hands on/popular?

With the Brissy situation, I'm just not sure the older guys were really nurturing the young kids enough. I hope Selwood has a great rapall with the younger generation....

Agree with all points. My comments on Bassett were purely based on recent performances in the SANFL (back-to-back flags) so clearly has the tools required to contribute at AFL level. It is very difficult to assess without knowing the roles required and inner workings of the Simpson structure.

Players that had to work hard as players often become better coaches as it didn't come as naturally to them. I have high hopes for Adam Selwood for exactly this reason and think he will be a good addition to the coaching structure in his development role.

As for the third point, you would hope remuneration may help, but for some people, especially with young families, I can certainly see how moving across the country would have its drawbacks. Everyone has their price though, and given how profitable the club is you would hope if we identified a candidate that was perfectly suitable for a role we would dangle a pretty large carrot to try and overcome the Perth stigma.

From all reports he is one of the most popular guys around the club and a lot look up to him.

West Coast really wanted him to stay and moved quickly before other teams got him.

I don't know anything about Hickmott, but I feel like the whole group of assistants is incredibly underwhelming.

It must be pretty hard to recruit assistants to Perth. I don't think the issue of isolation / location is such a big deal. It's more that we have no track record of producing future senior coaches and it seems like a bit of a graveyard for anyone looking to rise through the ranks quickly.

If we start winning games and playing in finals that might change. I didn't hear too much talk about us trying to grab some assistants from Melbourne, or the Dogs ect, all from good strong, finals sides, Sydney, Freo, Hawks, so once we start playing well, that will no doubt make our assitants look better, and the prospect of coaching over here will become much more desirable.

All I can say is thank Christ they didn't get Harvey

You know, I wouldn't have minded Harvey addn if Woosh was still head coach. We need someone to get the blood pumping with the team again. Players just looked too lax with how they went about it. Harvey/Chocco/etc would have gone nuts at them.

With a young group of coaches determined to make something of themselves, I think that will be the last of our problems this year. Happy not to have Harvey in current circumstances.
