Jesus Christ, people just love to throw around the word 'genius', don't they?

Not to mention, the idea that King is any sort of 'genius' is completely laughable.[/quote
Good call your a genius

I know he has just retired but I think Brett Guerra would be a good assistant. He has played under a variety of coaches at St Kilda, Ports and Hawthorn and seems to be a bit of a backline general and very constructive in his play. No doubt Simpson would know him well and I may be off the mark but on paper it would look to be a good move.

Left field, but could be a goer. :thumbsu: Tough bugger too.

I think he would be good , but I think he would have strong ties to Freo still , like the the idea of Voss or Black though
Not so sure about Watters , there's obviously a problem at St Kilda a few people getting out , would be interesting to know

Pretty sure Voss is going to the Pies, Belly may have strong ties to Freo but I don't think that'l stop him, Defo dont want Laidley or Scotty Watters.

Any one here still wants Burns around?
Re Peter Bell, has he done much coaching since he finnished?
Would love Harvey to be an assistant.

Can't see any problem with Burns staying on although I doubt he will. I feel that he may well be a different person altogether under a new coach and a new game plan.

Peter Bell pretty much implied on 6PR this afternoon that he'd contemplate a coaching job, given the offer. I hope so, he'd be a great inclusion with his experience, leadership skills and communication skills.

I think he would be to, that is interesting , as someone said it would be good to also have a Bomber Thompson in the the coaches box

I really would have thought a lot more discussion on this board would have been around the lack of a skills coach seeing as our skills were abysmal this year

Every player went backwards with skills
There's been a fair bit of discussion on this matter in the past. My understanding is that Kempy came down to training to assist with skills, but the sport scientists wouldn't allow the players to do additional work. Kempy got frustrated and stopped coming down. Though he remains a mentor to a few players, including Masten.

If anyone can correct that info please do so.

I can confirm that is true ..

I've read of the first and third bit (outside of BF), that Kempy was helping with skills and was a mentor for Masto, but have only seen the bit about sports scientists on here.

Most AFL clubs don't have fulltime skills coaches. They get in experts like we did with Kempy etc to look at certain things.
Skills coach at AFL clubs is not a required position.
To get drafted to AFL level you need to have pretty good skills and kicking especially is virtually impossible to change once you have reached 16 years of age. Awareness and decision making can change but the actual skill of how to kick is set in the person.
Both Hardwick and Clarkson have gone on record to say in the past that once you get them on an AFL list their kicking is what it is.

I have not seen many players improve their skill level at AFL level. Masten for example I don't think kicks better than he did 3 years ago, but he makes better decisions and has better awareness and time to now execute.

Correct me if I am wrong but can anyone name the full time skills coaches at any AFL club? There maybe some? But it is a waste of money. The AFL is the best of the best, skills coaches are for under 14's.

I have heard that same from someone who has a part time and minor role with the club.

Last year we were one of the top 4 teams for skills and this year i would say we looked pretty close to the worst. We NEED a skills coach and i hope we implement one.

Simpson on Friday night also said he was looking at getting someone to be director of coaching.

I know this is left field but what about Gary Ayres? I did hear that WCE were semi interested in him but not sure what sort of role. But he would be a good choice to head up director of coaching and would be a good senior mentor to Simpson.

Gary had a decent enough record as senior coach and recently has been coaching Port Melbourne who was pretty hard to beat for a number of years.

Nathan Bassett should also be considered as a backline coach.

Ruck coach i have no idea really....maybe get the ball rolling for Cox post career and have him become a part time role as a ruck coach?

Would love to keep Burns as senior assistant and he could be handy in helping Simpson get to know the squad. Word is he clashed with Woosha in parts towards the end so would love to see what ideas he has.

Voss would be a good get also and could slot in anywhere really and would be a good development coach.

Scott west could also be available as he said on trade radio he is open to going interstate and listed Perth and Brisbane.

My ideal setup:

Director of coaching: Gary A

Senior Coach: Adam Simpson

Senior Assistant: Scott Burns

Backline: Basset

Midfield: Voss

Forward: Longmuir

Skills: Kemp

Ruck: ???

Strategy and innovations ?

Development: A Selwood

ScottWest was just interviewed on Trade Radio, doesn't have a gig at an AFL club but has ben coaching in the VFL, champion player with some good raps as a coach.

Could be a good assistant for Simpson especially for our midfield.
