2nds West Coast Eagles WAFL Watch 2024

The WAFL clubs excauses have to stop, nothing stands in the way of the Eagles doing well in the WAFL now. It’s up to the Eagles, recruit away. Concessions are virtually all gone. What’s the problem now?

As far as I understand we’ve been given the concessions we asked for, or very close to it

So as you say, it’s up to the club now to use those concessions to build a WAFL list that can support our listed players. They spent considerable time last year investigating the best way forward and decided to stay with the current setup knowing full well the challenges involved

Reality is, we’ve lost one genuine quality player (Ruscoe) who made a contribution in 2024 and one good WAFL player (Nelson) who didn’t play a game. Both would’ve been handy in 2025 and have yet to be replaced by anyone of comparable standard.

We do look to have retained Sparks and Luccassen who are actual WAFL level players so that’s a positive

There’s two things I’d love to know re our WAFL side -
1) Who have we approached to play for us and what was done, if anything, to retain the AFL players we delisted
2) From the players we’ve been unsuccessful at recruiting, what has been the feedback/reasons given for not joining West Coast and are those issues fixable

In relation to 2025, a byproduct of prioritising youth at the selection table should that happen, is we will have some more senior players dropping back to the WAFL side

Every time Peel get on a run late in the season the phones lines light up about it being unfair.

You’re right, all systems go now and boy I hope it works but if it doesn’t, the WAFL need to come to the party to find a solution.

Best teams to compare our WAFL team to is the Crows and Powers sanfl.

SANFL Crows Signings
-2 AFL delisted players
-Plus another who was delisted a couple of years ago but been playing sanfl for another club.
-They signed the SANFL ressies leading goal kicker
-father son who went undrafted.

Power SANFL signings
  • a player they delisted from their afl team
  • former afl player player from another SANFL club. He won both medals for SA in the games vs WAFL & VFL
  • 2 father sons who went undrafted

We appear to well behind our approach to list building in the WAFL

Beagles signings:
  • 2019 Subi premiership player who’s been out of the league for two years, played at Kalannie this year;
  • Guy whose name kind of sounds like Maximum.

Nope the Eagles need to pull their fingers out and do better instead of farming blame to others for their shortcomings.

You’re possibly right but there’s a few ‘ifs’ there that shouldn’t be the basis for a stable AFL reserves team.

And I know SFA about the situation but again I don’t think it is a winner to have players farmed out. It can hinder development with the senior team having no say over positions for players.

It seems alignment is the best option but I realise Perth have an anti Eagles constituent. But how many members do they have? Do members immediately get voting rights? Get my drift?

From Wiki:
There were unsuccessful plans by the WAFL to relocate the Demons to the Perth Hills to capture expanding outer suburbs as West Perth did by moving to Joondalup, but in spite of the trouble many players had travelling to Lathlain, the Perth board voted by 115 to 83 to remain there on 11 July 1995.

So 198 members decided the fate of the club then.
How many members now? And more importantly how many members to change the constitution?

Not sure of the answer to that question? Does it matter how many members?
Are you saying the WAFC should just tell Perth to align with the Eagles?

Well considering there history of making poor choices for the last 30 years maybe someone external should make a decision for them.😂

That he is the biggest name signing. He had a whole article in The West.

Yes but I presumed that was just based on them coming across the transfer either through the WAFL or from ozfooty (or here), because the article didn’t contain anything that wasn’t already mentioned in those places. I don’t think the club itself is trumpeting the signing, or indeed anything to do with the Beagles.

Ok looks like I’ll have to spell it out.
1. If Perth still have SFA members; and 2. a lot of new members join then; 3. maybe those members might decide to change the constitution to allow an amalgamation.

As previously mentioned, in 1995 just 198 Perth members voted 115-83 not to relocate to Kalamunda. Minuscule numbers deciding on such a major change.

It happened once …

They just changed their constitution to not allow an alignment with an AFL club.

This is the old school attitude from the WAFL I’m talking about. Sure, the Eagles need to do better, but the WAFL need to come to the party to help find a better solution if the reserves continues to fail the next two seasons.

Is there someone better they are not talking about that we signed ?

Who’s “they”? The club doesn’t talk about the WAFL side full stop.

No, I’m not aware of any other, bigger name players they’re looking to sign. I bloody well hope there’s someone we don’t know about.

They = the media

We don’t talk about our WAFL side because we are embarrassed by it mostly. If they had won the WAFL premiership this year I guarantee we would have emails from WCE about every signing we make.

Our club is very vain that way

Woodcock was on Hase sen show last week and no one is hearing any big names linked to the Eagles WAFL side. They even sounded worried what it could mean, especially with a few already having injury worries.

They had intel that Perth had a big name signed (Parfitt)

…without putting it to a vote of the members.
If they changed the constitution with a vote of members - as I alluding to - then it could be ‘un-voted’ (with an influx of pro-amalgamation members).

But if, as you say, it was done without a members’ vote, then that makes a ‘coup’ so difficult and drawn out as to be impractical given we need a decent WAFL side - now!

No that’s not what I meant. They changed the constitution to require that any proposed alignment has to be voted on by the members.

So it’s not impossible. We’d just have to come up with a model their members would accept.

I wouldn't have thought the WAFL needs to do anything. They may choose to, but they have minimal resources, and they may also choose to point their focus in directions other than the disruptive child. Respect is earned

Respect is given when you are peers. If you only respect people who earn it you will have a pretty small circle around you. In any case we pay 600,000 bucks. If we aint getting respect for that money why are we paying it

If the WAFL wont give us respect we should be withdrawing all financial support to the competition and moving on elsewhere.

Be pretty hard to make a case the WAFL hasn’t given the Eagles respect. They constantly have to bend over to accommodate them.
But you could make a solid case the Eagles have not respected the WAFL and where they were born from.
