There's talks of Port walking out of the SANFL and possibly into the VFL. Reckon that might be the first stumbling block to forming a national reserves comp

VFL is pretty much the AFL reserves comp as it is. It's just the WA and SA seconds teams missing.

If Port do move, I don't think we will be too far behind given how unworkable the situation with the WAFL has been.

They might see it as a victory getting rid of us, but when we start raiding them for players for the reserves team they will change their tune.

If they had a chance to play AFL maybe. ..but not if it's only to play in another 2nd tier comp on the other side of the country...unless they are getting paid 100 K + might help though.

They get placed in the shop window so to speak and get exposure against other sides reserve players.

The influx of players from Box Hill the last few years shows it can be a good stepping stone.

Playing majority ammos with a handful of AFL listed players in a national reserves comp won't cut it

Gotta do something about the Beagles next season; it can't continue like this. It is dire, and makes the club look like a joke. Either pull it, move to another competition, or the WAFL has to make it a level playing field.
Yes, the Beagles are a joke. It looks so deflating and meaningless for the players. The listed players know they are in a team that is going to get massacred and that most of their teammates are not up to the standard, and the ammos know they are out of their depth. I think this falls at the club’s / Nisbett’s feet. This year’s team was done on the run and has been an abysmal failure, they have had a year now to come up with something more acceptable, so next year needs to be a lot better, in whatever form it is. The listed players need to be playing in a team and competition where they have a chance of winning, and winning means something. I think this situation is a contributing factor (not a main factor), but a factor nonetheless, to the ‘A’ team’s appalling season. All three teams, league, reserves and women’s, need to be going well for a strong and happy club. Currently, all three are last or second last by a long way.

Considering the closeness of the WAFL comp this year, those fringe listed WCE boys each could of been show casing their talent in competitive teams with a chance of winning, instead of running around getting thumped most weekends.... pretty sure their individual development would of been greater with the former then the latter.....more so when WCE were hijacked with injuries in the preseason....

The debates been done to death.

We want control over where our players play and develop, you don't get that if they get farmed out to other clubs systems.

Eg Sumich would at times play CHB for South Fremantle when he went back there, but the Eagles wanted him as a forward option.

If we stay in the WAFL best case scenario is we align with Perth since we are at Lathlain already. But those stubborn pricks think they are better off alone, and are struggling almost as bad as us.

Yeah, was speaking to some Perth officials the other day and had enough liquid courage to ask about the alignment, why it hadn’t happened etc.

Their response was pretty short and sharp, we don’t want to lose our identity!

They ended the conversation when I asked, what identity exactly? Utter turds in charge of a shambolic football club.

Did you call them massive campaigners on the way out Phil style?

Surely Sumich playing CHB for SF would of been earlier on in his career?....happens all the time now days with young talls, expands their footy nous apparently.... good on SF being before their time....

And that's the problem. WAFL teams tend to be run by small minded, self-centred, rather have some power and prestige despots who would rather rule over a decrepit rotting corpse than step away, do the right thing and end up with no personal power or authority.

Latter half of his career post the Eagles grand finals. 1997 WAFL grand final (still on the Eagles list) Sumich lined up at CHB like he had done most of the season for them. Easy to forget for Sharks supporters after their epic last quarter choke in that game :p

South Freo didn't want to change their week to week structure of Dorotich at full forward, which is my point. It left Sumich trying to earn a spot in the Eagles forward line, playing CHB for South because they didn't want to change their game plan to accommodate what the Eagles wanted.

In 1997 Sumich was that far past afl standard and had his falling out with Malthouse that he was never going to play again wherever he played…

People fall back on these one off type of scenarios with afl players going back to the wafl clubs to rail against the players being spread around instead of how well the system actually tended to work and for the far majority of players it worked fine.

It was happening before 1997 with South Fremantle when Sumich started being dropped back to the WAFL.

It's any case it's an example, there were others as well. In some instances we even had to transfer players mid-season between WAFL clubs to get them playing where we wanted them to. You can't get players to work on what their AFL clubs want if their WAFL are clubs playing a different system.

This year we needed to play Rotham in the ruck due to injuries, we trialled it at the Beagles. Can you imagine how that would have gone if we asked West Perth to play Rotham in the ruck instead of who they have?

Before the usual suspects jump on him, Rotham's best AFL game this year was back-up ruck Vs St Kilda and one worth trying again next season. An experiment we wouldn't have gotten to do at West Perth.

In Rothams instance the scenario probably wouldn’t have happened as West Perth wouldn’t have had no tall players to play ruck and the eagles would never had thought to try it…. Id love to know what the idea was to pick him last night . He barely rucked and played forward the whole time…

Ryan Turnbull was an instance where he got re allocated… worked out fine for him.

I agree his use last night was weird. He had a career best game as second ruck, and instead they played Dixon there last night. Maybe due to the wet and against Darcy they wanted the bigger body, in any case it wasn't the best move.

That's irrelevant to the issue of player development in the WAFL though.

It was enough of an issue in the 90s we seeked out the alignment with Claremont and then East Perth. Fremantle did the same thing with South Fremantle before they landed at Peel.

Adelaide created their own SANFL team to manage their player development. Port were lucky enough to already have the Port Magpies ready made alignment when they entered.

What does that tell you when Adelaide, Fremantle and us seeked a development team/alignment rather than spread their players out in the local league?

We would be the only club in the AFL without a reserve side if we spread our players out, it's backwards thinking from a bygone era.

Is there any chance of a new club being created to join the WAFL? It happened with Peel. The population of Perth is much bigger that it was 30 years ago, let alone when the original competition was designed. If a new club was formed, they might be happy to align with the Eagles; it’s certainly worked for Peel.

It would mean reworking all the recruitment zones again. It caused a bit of angst when Peel were bought in last time the WAFL expanded its teams.

Bunbury , half home games at Hands Oval Bunbury was suggested in the media ....could work except the travel for Eagles fringe players not ideal = won't work .

Well done SF for sticking to their guns then...it looked like it won them a flag....probably wouldn't of won it with a cooked Sumich sitting at FF.....anyway good luck to WCE finding a suitor in the WAFL....looks like it may be a case of Nesbitt dipping his short arms into those deep pockets of his and paying a 100K for each decent WAFL or WAAFL player to come to WCER's rescue.....

What it says is that the two adelaide sides, freo and us are sheep… how many flags have these 4 won with their own seconds sides??

Brisbane, suns, sydney and the giants put their sides together because the local league standard is poor… and have joined the vfl now … doesn’t mean we should
