IF ...

the COVID issues which have effectively ruined the Eagles' season before it even started had been inflicted upon, say, a Richmond, Geelong, Collingwood, Carlton, even St Kilda or Brisbane ...

THEN ...

I reckon there would have been a far greater industry-wide outcry. West Coast has publicly handled this matter with near-unbelievable class.

But I thought Simmo was all about excuses???
Covid is the excuse, he doesnt even have to justify poor performances

I'm legit worried that this season will be blamed on covid and injuries, and we continue on our current path next season.
100%.

Except the reason why the industry isn’t making a big deal out of it is because every team is dealing with covid and presumably dealing with it a lot better than we are. It’s not like the virus is deliberately seeking out WC players. There’s clearly an issue with the procedures we’ve put in place to avoid it. Didn’t handle the hubs well so no reason to believe we are following best practice re ‘living with covid’

Simpson goes back to back in your champions with credits in the bank.

Not a single player under 21 and only 2 players that by Friday will be under 22.

We might be looking at a rebuild but the Match Committee has not year about that.

What feels worrying (Geelong like) is that we have 6 players over 30 or 27% of our team and that does not include NicNat.

Our three under 22 players of West, XON and Edwards are like but plugs - in and out depending on who our weekend date is. Never sustained and never in clear and consistent positions.

I don’t disagree with the concept but, Hough aside and arguably Petch for the sake of sinking games into him, who should be playing that’s available?

Rotham over Hurn? Rotham is 24 so doesn’t meet the criteria strictly, but I’d agree with that for development sake.

Trew off no games?

The list is where it is age wise, but the match committee have done alright here for me.

I'm sick of all the negativity. We're 3 weeks off one of our best wins ever. Shuey and Kelly are now match fit. Richmond look as bad as us. Patty Naish against the team that didn't want him. Greg Clark's gonna have a huge debut. It's a big Friday night game at Optus. What more could you people want?

Richmond by 108

I'll be very drunk by the end of the game, hopefully enough to be happy either way.

According to Wikipedia, 2 (it doesn't seem that there are crossovers between enough of the Rioli's at SF to have had 3 play together, and whilst Cyril, Daniel and Willie have all been in the AFL at the same time - they play for 3 different teams so no chance they have been on the one field.

The caveat to this is of course NT football - I'm sure at some stage there were more Rioli's than 3 in any particular side - but at WAFL or AFL level at least I think 3 Rioli's will be a record.

Don't know how many Rioli's played together for St Marys in the NTFL... but pretty high likelyhood it was more than 2, given how many of them are in the clan;

The MC play the inexperienced guys in swinging roles and often out of position. West - if he is not an inside mid, he should not be playing. Why select him on the wing? Let's see tonight what high half forward and wing role they want him to play. I have no idea where they will play XON - I suspect neither do the MC. Good that we have kept Harry but will that give us three high flying interceptors or are there any flockers in our backline that want to defend?

We have senior players out of form and not able to keep up with the game and not having the touch of the game. Examples - the way Darling and JK are leading the forward line - it has no structure, it has no confidence, it has no potency, the smalls are not knowing where to go, etc. Yes we are losing at the midfield area but when the ball is coming in, all that seems to be available is a long kick to a contest.

With Guv and Barrass having such dominant marking strength, why are they never targeted for a kick n against their man? No - these two tend to be the pocket outlet kick.

You may be right in saying it is not purely the MC's fault. It is also on our game day strategy team. Our strength and conditioning team. Out List Management Team. Our development team. Let's face things, when we whip the Band-Aid off, it's not a simple scratch.

Is it bad this week? Maybe it is not a case of one week but a string of decisions over 3 years that has finally made me crack. What I object to is not seeing hope. A new and more competitive game strategy! Some faster ball movement (not all the time but on occasions would be nice). A few under 22 year old that look promising! A spirit that the team play with!

You can f**k off with synergy, it is teamwork. Shepherds, smothers, blocks, hard chases, run downs, confronting someone who comes in late for a tackle against us. etc. What I cannot stand is chasing shadows where defenders are zoning off and jog to man the mark where the next uncontested forward mark is taken. That old chestnut of kicking out long to the right boundary line. Stagnant forward line that call for "kick it long". Ah, I sense my bout of Covid is coming back or I am starting to steam up and feeling clammy.

On a positive note I did like the comment on Gaff - he cannot run out a game so he maybe the medical sub.

A massive positive is Dusty not playing, simply for the fact that we won't get the agonising fawning over him from the commentary team.
Neither is Cochin, a big out...
We be missing Schofield... arguably our best midfield coach, am sure they have it covered by
'the system'...

LOL since when was Jacob Brennan a coach.

Since he retired:

A serious ankle injury ended his career, but he immediately turned to coaching and earned high acclaim as coach of East Fremantle colts.

Initially having a role in game development when returning to the Eagles, he worked with the AFLW program before being elevated to his current role [development coach] this year.

I would've thought as soon as Williams was out you would've ran Dixon as a backup ruck since tiges are doing the Nank & Soldo combo. Will he be a late in? Feels like a lot of pressure to put on Strnadica otherwise

Dixion for Waterman would be more ideal.

Or maybe we do a sneaky and rest JK and bring Dixon in.

Again I don’t think many would disagree with that. But that is almost entirely long term stuff, that everybody agrees with. You’re saying where are the youth in the team. I’m saying who else should they have selected?

There isn’t anyone but JK and JD to lead the forwardline right now. If Allen were benched for those two, I’d be fuming. But Allen doesn’t get a chance to lead the forwardline whilst he can’t move.

Everyone wants to see some faster and more incisive ball movement, but what does that have to do with the average age of players X, Y and Z.

We need to kick the tires on the West’s and Exxon’s of the world. I agree with finding them a suitable role and giving them some leash to go for it. I agree they shouldn’t be in an out of the side. But they’ve picked them today, like I hope most of us want.

But as we look at it on the morning of game day, pointing out they’re not even going in that young when there’s really nobody else young to pick isn’t anything.

I’d love them to be playing a host of promising kids but they’re not healthy or on our list. All things considered this 22 is about as next generation as we can muster right now, with a small number of exceptions (Hough/Petch/JJ/Trew with no match fitness). The allocation of midfield roles is one thing, but the midfield of Exxon, West, Naish, Kelly, Clark, SPS, Shuey, Redden is about as future focused as it could be with our list and available players.

The list build looks like it has not adequately prepared for our reality. Ok, most would accept that. However, it’s the list we have. Given that, we’ve gone in about as young and about as future focused as we can. No point saying where are the 21 and unders when we know they’re either unavailable or not employed by us. That’s an off-season problem, not a Round 7 game day morning problem.
