Looking forward to us being semi competitive for a quarter and then watching Richmond collect every ground ball on their way to belting us on our home deck.

Then I look forward to Simmos press conference where he tells us about credits, a lack of synergy and then drops anyone who played less than 50 games for the club so far.

Again I don’t think many would disagree with that. But that is almost entirely long term stuff, that everybody agrees with. You’re saying where are the youth in the team. I’m saying who else should they have selected?

There isn’t anyone but JK and JD to lead the forwardline right now. If Allen were benched for those two, I’d be fuming. But Allen doesn’t get a chance to lead the forwardline whilst he can’t move.

Everyone wants to see some faster and more incisive ball movement, but what does that have to do with the average age of players X, Y and Z.

We need to kick the tires on the West’s and Exxon’s of the world. I agree with finding them a suitable role and giving them some leash to go for it. I agree they shouldn’t be in an out of the side. But they’ve picked them today, like I hope most of us want.

But as we look at it on the morning of game day, pointing out they’re not even going in that young when there’s really nobody else young to pick isn’t anything.

I’d love them to be playing a host of promising kids but they’re not healthy or on our list. All things considered this 22 is about as next generation as we can muster right now, with a small number of exceptions (Hough/Petch/JJ/Trew with no match fitness). The allocation of midfield roles is one thing, but the midfield of Exxon, West, Naish, Kelly, Clark, SPS, Shuey, Redden is about as future focused as it could be with our list and available players.

The list build looks like it has not adequately prepared for our reality. Ok, most would accept that. However, it’s the list we have. Given that, we’ve gone in about as young and about as future focused as we can. No point saying where are the 21 and unders when we know they’re either unavailable or not employed by us. That’s an off-season problem, not a Round 7 game day morning problem.
That was almost as long as an Obeanie trade hypothetical

You might want to give it a miss then.

Seems like the 'Big Calls on WC game preview have got more conservative after the last two beltings?
Big call: Clark to collect 10 contested possessions on his AFL debut replacing midfield bull Elliot Yeo.

Still, that's a busy day at the office, with all his other stats no doubt...?
We shall see..
Gov back, with Barrass should help quell the Lynch factor...but who knows anything these days, nothing goes according to script...the script was accidentally put through the paper shredder weeks ago by WC office staff.

  • Senior players play like crap (in comparison to both their benchmark and their opponents) and next week we continue to back them in
  • Developing players playing out of position struggling to make the impact are in and out and continue to be given bit part roles - dropped at the next chance

When I heard Simmo defending Yeo from Dipstick Cornes criticism, I thought to myself "why with such a gap in football would you rush him back into the senior team along with 3 other returnees?" The defence of his selection made me think he was 2 weeks away from playing at a level to be competitive.

Simpson has been so reluctant to return his senior players through the WAFL. They come back underdone. With Shuey, Yeo and Cripps, they have missed a heap of 2021 and 2022 football.

You ask for names. Hough is the obvious one. J Williams looked far more interested leading up than JK so yes, I'd bring him in at JK's expense. I have hardly been a Rotham fan in the last 2 years but give him a rebounding HB role and I'd bring him in above Hurn.

Your right in that Chesser, Trew, Winder, Joyce, L Edwards, etc are not available. Apart from Edwards, all the others have been impacted by injury which is more a recruitment issue than a match day one.

List Team - if we keep Hurn and JK on the list, will you back them in and play them regardless. MC - Yes. Dilemma and Simmo is never going to consistently rest Hurn or JK.

How do you think we will change the kick outs in defence when Hurn is still our full back! Oh and I went to a couple of summer sessions - Hurn was doing the same crap then so it is not a matter of covid response.

Enough. Let's enjoy tonight and wish Clark a great debut.

I think Yoe played beacuse he was by far the best available. He had a run in teh WAFL. He needs more run, and will get it playing. We dont have a replecement for him palying WAFL.

Well it's an open book tonight.

Who the hell knows whats going to happen?

Could come out firing after being embarrassed all week in the media.

Or fold like credits in the bank.

According to Wikipedia, 2 (it doesn't seem that there are crossovers between enough of the Rioli's at SF to have had 3 play together, and whilst Cyril, Daniel and Willie have all been in the AFL at the same time - they play for 3 different teams so no chance they have been on the one field.

The caveat to this is of course NT football - I'm sure at some stage there were more Rioli's than 3 in any particular side - but at WAFL or AFL level at least I think 3 Rioli's will be a record.

I recall a club level rugby team in Wales where 14 of the starting 15 were called Jones. The coach had no sense of humour as there were a couple more on the bench.
Apparently 76 Jones's have played rugby for Wales, and 54 have played soccer.

These are all long term things that they’re incapable of fixing before a ball is kicked today.

Brought senior players back too early, no WAFL? Very true, but they’re seemingly making Gaff come back via the sub then WAFL, so that’s progress made in the short term.

Where’s the youth? Well on paper it appears the midfield is as much of an all youth setup as we could muster.

Rotham over Hurn I agree with to explore what we have, but Rotham is 24 so hardly would have helped your initial age breakdown of no 21 year olds. Hough in should be a no brainer, don’t care who for, 100%.

JWill over JK? There’s embracing the youth and then there’s negligence. He played a full game of AFL football to the tune of two disposals last month. He’s an 18 year old tall playing WAFL seniors for the first time in his life this year, and I have a lot of hope he’ll be a great prospect. Maybe bring him in sporadically by year’s end. But to say he should be playing over Kennedy is tanking, a borderline safety concern for him, and at a certain point our young mids will get more by having a target to kick to than Williams will get out of some cardio and three disposals at AFL level.

I agree that the list has been badly built to navigate what it looks like we will now be navigating, but these are not Friday morning issues ahead of a Round 7 clash, and they won’t be fixed tonight so it’s pointless raising them here.

If SPS and West and Exxon play **** all footy in midfield, that’s worthy of a bake in the autopsy thread, but getting fired up that they’ve been played out of position in the past, or that Hurn and JK are on the list, or that there’s no children in the team when there’s no suitable children on the list gets us nowhere as those things are locked. Now it’s about what do we do going forward, and it looks like they’re attempting to address it with what we have eg - Gaff back slowly, kids in the middle.
