Apparently this has been rejected I heard?
I remember that day/night in ‘96 well, I was also at both games but was supporting the Bears and the Swans. Tough afternoon for me was well and truly made with an iconic prelim victory for the Swans.I had that jumper in the picture. Lost it somehow in one of my many moves.
We made quite a few prelims in the 90s. 91, 94, 95, 96, 97. Just couldn't get to the big one. 96 was devastating for me. The Bears and the Bombers both lost their prelims. And I went to both games because the Bears game was at the Sydney Football Stadium followed by the Bombers game at the SCG. The Bears were warm favourites for their prelim too. Soul crushing. The Bears colours were what made me become an Essendon fan. Best sporting colours in the country!
Yeah, he's a ****.From Andrew Webster's article today on the Nine platforms:
On the surface, it appears a group of well-intentional and wealthy league-loving businessmen from Perth have failed to appreciate how aggressive V’landys can be.
Tellingly, Cumins and V’landys have only met a few times, let alone talked to each other. The PNG bid is being negotiated by two prime ministers.
The NRL will now negotiate directly with the WA government with a view to running a new franchise themselves.
Essentially, seems the WA Bears bid didn't stroke V'Landys' ego enough.

V'Landys is hands down the worst thing that has happened to this sport in some time.
Absolute snake oil salesman. Greasy git.
He’s overseen the Dolphins entry to the NRL.
as long as there are English, NZ and pacific island players to choose from, it will have enough talent to ensure that there is no lack of decent players.
Whether it’s all smoke and mirrors or not the Vegas thing has created a hell of a lot of media and publicity.
he women’s game is a very strong product and undoubtedly is stronger as its own product than the AFLW.
I'm curious to know why you think this? The last sentence and him being good for the game don’t have to be mutually exclusive.
It will only be determined once he finishes whether he has been good for it or not.
He’s overseen the Dolphins entry to the NRL.
Tick.
He’s hell bent on expanding which like it or not has to happen and unlike the AFL, is not dependent on a limited talent pool. I love the AFL and there are many things about it that it does better than league and that I like about it more than league, but as long as there are English, NZ and pacific island players to choose from, it will have enough talent to ensure that there is no lack of decent players. Whether you think they’re spread evenly enough is a different issue but there’s more than enough of them. So his desire to expand and willingness is another tick a decade and a half on from the previous new club.
Whether it’s all smoke and mirrors or not the Vegas thing has created a hell of a lot of media and publicity. I don’t think in any way could you not call it a success it’s just a matter of scale.
Ratings and finances seem to be healthy. The women’s game is a very strong product and undoubtedly is stronger as its own product than the AFL W.
He might be a grub but he’s doing a decent enough job
Should have been down decades ago.
But, if anything that is a huge negative for the skips.
What are the tangible results ?
The beauty about the AFLW is that there is no shortage of talent from around the world.
I'm curious to know why you think this?
This season was the poorest quality competition I can remember in some time. Stretching the talent pool even further doesn't seem like a winning formula for me. I get the business case for it but the actual spectacle suffers.
That is absolutely what I'm saying. There was only two teams that looked destined to play in a grand final this season from about round 10 and neither of them would've got close to the Panthers sides of 21/22 for instance.I don’t think any lack of quality owes a single thing to talent.
The one thing that has to be addressed is people running the games themselves. No one knows what rules they are playing by which leads to some of the farcical things we’ve seen onfield at times this year.
But you can’t seriously tell me there’s a lack of talent in the competition.
The wooden spoon team themselves have half a dozen players I would kill to have in my side.

There is top talent across the board through the various teams but the teams themselves weren't great this year.
That's not only me that thinks that btw. This Penrith side was it's weakest of the last 5 years and still won relatively easily.
Stephen Crichton was a very good player, Koroisau was much better at Penrith (easier to look better there than at the Tigers though tbf) and Burton filled in most of the season as their starting centre (19 out of 26 games, played 7 in the halves). He wasn't coming off the bench and wasn't playing the utility role.Sorry I don’t agree with that. The team they had back then ON PAPER looks better. Stephen Crichton wasn’t nearly the player he is now. Api Koroisau is arguably a better player now. Matt Burton was a utility. Melbourne are probably a better team now. Brian To’o wasn’t the player then that he is now. Isaiah Yeo is a machine now, arguably the second best forward in the game: do you really think he was that good in 2021? Cleary wasn’t as good then as he is now. Luai definitely wasn’t. Dylan Edwards was a very good player then - he’s probably the best fullback in the game now.
one thing in sport never changes: things were always ‘better before.’ Sometimes it’s true. Quite often it isn’t.

Again, that's not just me that thinks this is a weaker Panthers side. It's how the salary cap works, they're supposed to be weaker.
This year alone:
Lowest points scored in their premiership years
Most points conceded in their premiership years
Most losses in their premiership years
In 2021, they had a PD of +390. This year it was +186.
It's really not even close.
You've quite literally just made my point The top teams were stronger in 2021 than they were this year.I know Burton wasn’t coming off the bench. But he is a specialist five eighth now that much is clear. You couldn’t really say he was a pure centre before. I wasn’t suggesting he was Craig Wing for NSW at Penrith.
Of course Crichton was a good player then, he’s a good player full stop. Anyone suggesting he’s not better now has rocks in their head, though.
So what if they had a better differential then. Can’t that just as easily be explained by the fact that Nathan Cleary missed half this season, their original back up half also missed a lot of games from memory, and you could easily if you wanted to, postulate that other teams have defended better
In fact I would suggest that the top four teams in 2021 having better differentials than Melbourne this year points to the fact that in 2021 the disparity was glaringly shithouse that season.
What are we to do,
You've quite literally just made my point The top teams were stronger in 2021 than they were this year.
You'd be wrong on the bolded by the way. There was 8,888 points scored in 2021, 9,567 points scored in 2024. The teams weren't defending better this year.
I'll leave it there as I'm not convinced you'll change your mind anyway but all of the statistics back the case that this Panthers side is the weakest of their premiership years.
I can see that you are asking the wrong the questions and getting frustrated by your own questions
that i didn't ask or imply so I'll pass.
In fact, just looking at their PD totals across the 4, it's pretty easy to see they weren't the team they have been.
2021: +390
2022: +306
2023: +333
2024: +186
One of those years is not like the others.
V’landy’s was getting criticised seemingly for doing something based on the fact that someone hadn’t done it previously.
As I said, should he be criticised because others hadn’t done it prior.
It’s not a difficult query to address.
You implied it as soon as you said that the Dolphins entry to the comp was long overdue. Their delayed start to the comp is irrelevant. If someone makes it happen, then they are the ones responsible for getting it done, aren’t they?
Yes of course it did. I never suggested it didn't. That's a big part of the reason they weren't as impressive. As was losing all the players that they lose year on year.Nathan Cleary played 10 matches this year in the regular season and in a number of those he wasn’t fully fit either.
He played a minimum of 17 in all the others (2022). You don’t think that had anything to do with it?
You keep making my point for me and don't seem to realise you're doing it.
