Do you resistance training guys use fitness tracker apps/watches? Are they worth it for you?

Considering a watch but no idea if they're worth it. The sleep tracker side interests me a fair bit as I get insomnia pretty bad, calorie burn side interests a bit but I dont count calories in at all so likely little benefit (?), steps I'd like to get more in per day but could just use a pedometer for this.

Are there good cheap options you'd recommend using before splashing out on a 'good' one later?

Never even considered using one to be honest. A watch doesn't really track the data I need for resistance work and I know plenty of people who got them and never use them.

I think I took a fleeting interest in steps for awhile and a $10 pedometer off eBay did that job.

I'm not really a watch wearer day to day though so not someone who would spend hundreds on any kind of watch ever

I use my apple watch predominately to track my energy expenditure. But I also use it to track all my activities. I definitely think they're more suited for cardio activities in terms of monitoring HR, pace, distance. I wear my watch pretty much 24/7 - the new ios update tracks training load, heart rate variability (HRV - which is a very good measure of overall stress), VO2 max (which isn't completely reliable), respiration and shows trends and comparisons over given time periods for pretty much everything. I also track my sleep to see how it relates to other measures like HRV.

If you're only doing resistance training then maybe you won't get as much value out of using one.

I wouldn't bother with a fitness watch purely for strength training. I use my garmin to track workouts just because I have it already, but it's pretty useless for weights sessions unless I want to go in afterwards and edit all the exercises/reps/weight. I already use a basic gym app for all that though, logging sets on my watch is more for my rest periods than anything.

For running though I find it absolutely invaluable. It's a huge part of my motivation and I would literally rather skip a run than do one that I can't record on my garmin. I love all the data the watch provides about my runs.

Amen to this

I'm old school I guess but I jot everything down from a session on a basic note pad .
How many reps , time between a set and or exercise .
Even how I feel .

Its basic as it gets but you can get a good picture of any trends and whether the load or intensity is too much or too little .

It's takes a total of 5 minutes , a lot of people who don't get results normally don't document what they are actually doing .

My weekly training schedule is pretty laid-back but practical. I like to keep things interesting and mix it up a bit. I hit the gym on Mondays for weight training, focusing on different muscle groups.

Im huge on tracking metrics etc. I do very little pure cardio anymore (I commute on a bike to work once a week and usually do a run once or twice a week) but resistance train 4-5 times a week minimum.

I find that calorie and heart rate stuff is helpful for understanding exertion coupled with load metrics (which are essentially lodged yourself) to understand how hard youre pushing in any given week).

Its all a bit inexact but depending how train and how much yo iike data there is still a place for fitness trackers IMO.

I have an apple watch now but i actually dont like it aesthitically, im looking at a new version thats more watch than tracker but will do sleep and stuff too.

My brother got a Guard one recently and while we were on the couch yesterday it said he'd done 600 steps haha. Guess I can cross that brand off the list...

I'm expecting to get one for curiosity sake rather than intensely track every workout as that sounds good in theory but I know I wont do it after a short while. Calorie burn, sleep, steps, HR probably what I'd loosely follow most, even though they do alot more these days.

I think a bit like using scales it can be a helpful tool if you compare it against itself as a measure of workload.

Im 90% sure the calories tracker it has sits somewhere between 70-90% accurate but against itself its 100%.

If i burn 700 active calories one day and then burn 1400 the next day, i know ive done double the activity work.

Yeah that would be my use case. Not needing 100% accuracy as I don't track my calories in (count daily protein in my mind but that's it) but something for each workout/game would be handy to have figures associated

Likewise with daily steps but if it's counting 100's while sitting on the couch it's no good for this

Yeh, its worth doing a little research about what you want to do.

I have the apple watch now, its suprisingly good for what I need (and i suspect what you need) BUT i just dont like the aesthetics of it.

I looked at a few garmins but for cost and aesthetics it just didnt stack up.

Currently im looking at the Withings scan watch range which ticks basically all the boxes i want.

I was just looking at Garmins and actually didn't mind the look of them tbh. I'll have a look at Whitings

The garmins are pretty good if you dont mind it looking like a fitness tracker watch (the high end ones a little less so but youre creeping toward 2k at that point).

Withings is an actual watch with a small digital component on the face and most of the work is done in the app.
