Oh wow i've always wanted to see one of those bands live but I missed them when they came out here :( From everything i've heard, and videos of seen, they are absolutely incredible.

That first song is like if Brand New and Explosions In The Sky had a baby, and it's all kinds of good times. Although their name leaves something to be desired :p Actually both songs remind me of that Brand New sound if it was adapted to post rock, kind of a mix between noise and that post-rock ambience.

Circa Survive is the band i'm getting into now

Yeah the band name is a bit elaborate for sure haha. Yeah they remind me of a lot of older 90s emo like Jawbreaker and American Football, but yeah bringing a lot of post rock into it too with their build ups and bridges. Brand New rule though. As do Circa Survive!! They were also pretty cool live, did you get to see them? Juturna is one of those albums I can go back to after a couple of years and love. I'm a sucker for Anthony Green's voice haha.

I just find bands like that with long band names difficult to remember, but it makes them stand out! Well I haven't really listened to any 90s emo, I haven't heard of either of those bands. And yes actually when they came out with Coheed I hadn't heard of them, they were opening, but I went and they blew me away and I just came out saying "I have to check out this band.' I'm really digging Blue Sky Noise at the moment, and I love Anthony's voice too! It's hard to get my friends to like them though cause once they realise he's not a girl they get turned off him :p

Well if you liked that track that I initially posted, definitely check out that album. It's one of my favourites for the year and has a lot of that 90s emo mixed with post rock. And yeah I got to see Circa at Thursday's last ever headlining show and then at Soundwave. I love the stuff he did with Saosin too, takes me back to my teen years haha. He has such a weird stage presence too.

But this is American Football, their only album released in 1999. If you like Brand New and a lot of that kind of stuff you'll hear their roots here:

I'm definitely going to check out the album when I get home, been staying at a friend's house for the past couple of days. Oh yes Anthony Green's stage presence is legitimately crazy, he just throws himself around the stage and jumped into the mosh pit!

I can definitely hear Brand New in this, the vocal style and the guitars mainly, not hard to see these are their roots! And of course the distorted guitar parts at around 2 mins onwards just scream Brand New. Or maybe I shouldn't say that since American Football came first :p

Uhh.. Does Abba count?

Nightowl trying to ressurect the Dog House, I like it!

Unfortunately for listening to Abba, we may have to ban you from the forum :p

Yeah. The dog house is a bit like sitting in an empty theatre on your own..crickets...
Surely u can appreciate the production value of Abba music..and it's generally cheerful..
I loved them when I was a kid.
Don't listen to much music lately. I like Ed Sheeran..
I looked up Andrew Huang on YouTube - based on your albums list on the other thread.
Loved him doing the Breaking Bad theme with meth lab equipment. It was beautiful..

Abba isn't too bad, but I was exposed to it 24/7 at my house because my mum was hugely into them. So I kind of developed a hatred towards them :p

Andrew's easily one of my favourite artists, mainly because he's so versatile. He can do 80's pop, then switch it to dubstep, then back to a soft acoustic song, then out to some rap, and then into a jazz fusion song. And as a musician that appeals to me a lot. Also when he came out here I got to meet him and he was so down to earth, although that probably has to do with him not being very famous :p But he was a cool guy.

Excellent. I had vaguely heard of him. Seems a lovely guy.

Do you play instruments other than the guitar? Can you sing?
I mean we can all sing.. but it's whether anyone can stand to listen to us.. :)

Well I can play drums, bass, saxophone, some piano. I don't think I can sing, but i've got a few compliments after gigs from people saying I'm a good singer. And that's from random people, not just my mum ;)

What about you, can you play any instruments or sing?

I like to sing. But could not get up in front of people. Just in the car..or washing dishes..or hanging out clothes..etc.
I learnt piano as a kid.. Have forgotten most of it.
Sax is a sexy instrument..baby-making music! Cool.

Self taught. Everything that I listed is self taught except for the saxophone, and guitar I got lessons at a place for 6 months, then left, and now i'm teaching there. There are a lot of free videos online that help with singing, and you can record yourself and listen to what you want to change in your voice. I no longer hate hearing my voice recorded :p

It also helps when your friend is an amazing singer and can give you a few pointers :p

You sound like a band geek, I don't think I can talk to you anymore.

Kidding, haha. I was a band geek once upon a time. This one time, at band camp...

I had sax lessons for about 7 years. Haven't played in probably 5 though, haha. Self teach guitar but don't get enough time. My sexy guitar's just sitting in the corner of my room not getting used. :(

I'm a professional singer, but only in my bathroom.

I'm not a band geek! I'm one of the cool guys in the band. You know the dark, brooding, mysterious guy that doesn't talk to anybody because he's too cool for them ;)

Ah right I only had them for 3 years, I got annoyed because every single time I had to put the bloody thing together, and then take it apart again. So I got a guitar, and then just learnt all the other instruments because, well, I wasn't really popular at school and didn't have much better to do :p But it helps when you're recording people, cause you can show them what they're doing wrong on each instrument :D

Ahh yes I know those guys. I call them 'Dans'.

Hahahaha. It was a bit of a pain. Reeded instruments shit me too. Never really enjoyed it a whole heap but I wanted to learn an instrument and I guess that was the best at the time. Took me an unbearable teacher to actually quit, haha.

Guitar's a lot of fun to mess around on. My only issue is that I get bored by the basics and only really get motivated to play when I hear something cool - which is complicated most of the time...

You're studying music recording or something yeah?

It was all about the reed, I never knew what I was doing but somehow I got to the 2nd best big band in the whole school out of 5 bands. So I must've been doing something right! I actually started because... Lisa Simpson played it. Yeah. I was that cool.

I started off with Blink 182, within six months I was doing Guns N Roses stuff. I'm a pretty fast learner which helps, so most of the complicated stuff isn't too hard for me. Until you get into the guitar virtuosos, but I usually just leave them alone :D But the best feeling is getting up on stage and improvising a solo and absolutely nailing it. Seriously you should start a band, it's awesome to just jam with some mates.

Yeah i'm doing audio production, mainly focused on recording modern bands. So your metal/rock/pop/alternative. It's combined with some theory and performance aspects though, so I now know how to compose pieces for an orchestra. Who knew?

I got to the best band at my primary school and original high school, then kept getting invites to do it at my second high school but by then I was completely past caring. :p
Lisa Simpson's a pretty unique role model. ;) We got the choice of sax, flute and clarinet at my primary school and I was convinced that flute was for girls and clarinet just looked weird, haha. Sax it was!

Yeah I'm the slowest learner on the planet combined with having the attention span of a peanut. I also just don't get much time to play, and when I do feel like playing I can't be bothered actually finding something to play, haha.
If I had the time, or any mates who were into playing music, I would. ;)

That's pretty cool though, I'm jealous of people who can compose. :p I can arrange but I can't compose, haha.

Yeah but did you get there after only having played for 6 months? ;) Well I was always that smart one, a bit of an outsider, so I was like Lisa a bit :p The best part about that was that I still did really well at school even though I put in hardly any work. It's so easy doing that :p
You guys are lucky. Our school was more like "You want recorder? Here learn recorder!" and NO other options for music :(

I have the attention span of a peanut too! Combined with being a fast learner means that I whiz through a lot of stuff, but also if something's taking a while I get distracted and just leave it for about 2 months. Case in point, I wrote 10 songs for my band when we were just starting out in about 7 days. But when I started to try to get into a bit more progressive music, odd time signatures and the like, a song took me 2 months to write. But it was damn good!!!

See I like to create acoustic versions of every song, and sing over them. And record them sometime. And add string sections to them sometimes, or record and create different versions. Like I turned Feeling This by Blink 182 into a ballad that you could find on a Coldplay CD. I lost the file though :(

No, but I was about 7 when I started... :p
I'm a bit like that too. Always leave everything til the last minute and not put in as much effort as I should, but still do decently. It's pretty good but I always feel bad for my mates who work so hard and never manage to beat me, haha.
We went through the dreaded recorder years as well...I was always the best in my class. Recorder star!

Writing music has always been something I wished I could do. Always hated music theory with a passion though so that didn't exactly help... :D

I've got a semi hollow so I can play electric or acoustic, which is pretty cool. I love the sound of acoustic but I prefer playing cool riffs to chords which you get more on electric, so it was a good choice for me.
You should send me some stuff. :thumbsu:

I did always feel sorry for my mates, but I ended up helping a few of them and semi-tutoring them, so it made me feel better about it :D
We had a recorder ensemble, that played every monday morning at assembly. Looking back I feel sorry for every single teacher in the room that had to withstand that, you don't understand what it's like when you're still in primary school!

Writing guitar based songs can be easy. Just grab G, D, Em, C, mix them up a bit, get a melody, and you're done a basic one :D You don't even need to know any theory, it's how I started. And then we got into modes and 17th century music theory, and then I realised I knew nothing. Nothing at all. :( But jazz is fun now :D

See I started out with an electric, and then moved to an acoustic, and I love my acoustic, give me a slow acoustic jam and i'm in heaven. It's my baby :hearts: But you can't beat busting out some RATM on the electric! I'm pretty sure I have 2 electrics, a couple of acoustics, and a classical guitar somewhere.
My band's actually just recorded an album, but now we have to go through the pain of mixing/mastering it. I'll send you some stuff when I actually have some decent-sounding tracks instead of me just messing around haha
