This is a fairly self serving post but I am considering making a thread soon where the definition of a "21st century player" will be rather important, and by that I mean a player who would be considered a 21st century player rather than a 20th century player.

Now my first instinct was to say every player drafted in the 2000 draft and beyond is a 21st century player (yes I know technically 2000 isn't 21st century but these players did not play their first game until 2001 so I think it counts) but thinking about it in more depth I am not so sure.

I mean Brent Harvey was drafted in 1995 and he played 21 seasons, and all but 4 (or 5) of those seasons were in the 21st century. Barry Hall too, drafted in 1995 and he played 5 seasons in the 20th century and 10 seasons in the 21st century, so does that make him a 20th century player (being drafted there), or a 21st century player?

If we decide to go into the 90's drafts for 21st century players what should be the cut off, is 1996 fine, what about 1994, where a player like Adam Yze, whose career went from 1995 (drafted in 1994) until 2009, him having played the slim majority of his career in the 21st century rather than the 20th.

To be honest I am leaning towards 1995 as looking at the 150 game career, someone like Steven Sziller who was drafted in 1994, played 156 games but played majority of those games in the 20th century, but someone like Clint Bizzell who was drafted in 1995 played around about 150 games too, but he played majority of his games in the 21st century. I am beginning to think that 1995 is a good cut off for "21st century" players as it means any player who was any good who was drafted in 1995 would have played majority of their career in the 21st century.

For example I just feel like Brent Harvey, Barry Hall, Darren Milburn, Daniel Chick, Simon Prestigiacomo and Jared Crouch feel more "21st century" to me than Shannon Grant, Michael O'Loughlin, Adem Yze, Scott Lucas, Jeff White, and Scott Camporeale.

1993 is definitely a no go as even the players who played a long time still played most of their careers in the 20th century, so it feels like the earliest that could be argued is 1994.

So my question is, what counts as a 21st century player compared to a 20th century player and what do you consider to be the cut off? Should it be a hard and fast rule of "they can't have started their career until 2001, or something else, where they played the majority of their career in the 21st century?

I need a sort of hard cut off for the thread I am thinking of making as I want to make a thread for a mock draft of players from the 21st century, so I was thinking either the 1995 draft or the 2000 draft? What do you all think?

Debut later than 1 Jan 2001.

If you're considering a 'best players of the 21st century' or similar, it is too difficult for people to exclude pre 21st century achievements if you include players who have played some football in the 1990's.

A player who has played exclusively in the 2000’s, so players from the 1999 draft onwards.

I think it's case by case - the player needs to be primarily remembered for what he did in the 21st century rather than the 20th. So a player might have played significant amounts of footy in the '90s but hit his peak and had all of his major achievements in the 2000s - that would make him a twenty-first century player in my mind.

Mark Riccuito is an interesting borderline case I think. He had 3 All-Australian selections in the '90s and 5 in the 2000s, his only premiership in the '90s but his only Brownlow in the 2000s. He was All-Australian captain and club captain only in the 2000s. I think of him more as a 21st century player, just.
