A 1990’s Wangaratta jersey manufactured by Adidas.

In the mid 1980’s manufacturers of woolen jerseys moved from a vertical weave to a horizontal weave when producing tops with vertical stripes, so there were no more pin stripes or cross stitches on either side of the vertical stripes. The number square still has a vertical weave. The patches have been ripped off.

This jersey is exactly the same as a Collingwood player’s one from the mid 1980’s to the early 1990’s.

Two Greensborough jerseys. The one on the viewer’s left is from the 1970’s and it’s manufactured by Sherwood Royal. The other one is from the 1980’s is manufactured by Rider.

A North Shore jersey (Geelong Football League) manufactured by Sherwood Royal.

I use to own a woolen jumper when the Bulldogs was sponsored my ICI, But I currently own a Diadora LeasePlan Bulldogs long sleeve jumper from 2006

I found the woolen Footscray ICI jersey in an op shop. I can’t believe someone had gotten rid of it. I like this version as it doesn’t have the red collar. The PI ones didn’t have the collar.

Anybody know what team this is?
View attachment 829844
I don’t know what team it is, but I know that Savers is a great place to find football jerseys, including player issue ones. Which Savers did you see it at? That maybe a clue, as Brunswick Savers gets a lot of EDFL tops, whereas Footscray gets a lot of Western Region tops. Greensborough gets a lot of NFL (Northern Football League) tops. Ringwood gets a lot of EFL teams.

That’s my local Savers. It’s closed for the year due to a major revamp. Most of my collection (which includes AFL PI’s) come from there. People have no idea what they are donating. It’s not an EDFL team. It’s a great jumper, however I have no idea what team it is.

Above: A Polworth woolen Coburg jersey from the late 1980’s, when the VFA crest was on the left breast. Although it has a machine stitched number 25, I doubt it is a player’s jersey because the patch is nylon as opposed to embroidered. It also has no sponsor patch. At the time Coburg was sponsored by Mazda. Coburg has always been my VFA team.

Two Victorian jerseys manufactured by Ryder. The one with the yellow V is a VFA state representative jersey from the early 1990’s. VFA and Vic Safe are embroidered directly onto the jersey.

The one with the white V is not a PI VFL Victoria jersey, because a) it has no number, and b) Ryder never manufactured tops for the VFL. The weave in the V-neck area is horizontal as opposed to vertical. Woolen VFL PI jerseys had a vertical weave in the V-neck area.

The jersey looks like it is from the 1970’s. It is possibly a school state representative jersey, because Ryder made school football jerseys. Victoria jerseys were never sold in retail stores, as it was considered an honor to represent the big V. One had to earn the right to wear a Victoria jumper, and therefore it would be an insult to the greats of the game if one could purchase a big V top. I have also seen one of these jerseys manufactured by Sherwood Royal.

There are a few 90s PIs in this lot.
Nothing beats the interlocking cloth monogram. I wish Carlton used it now. Nike did a mock up version of it, by including shading on a sublimated CFC. It was pretty good, but still not as good as the cloth monogram.

Unfortunately Puma reverted back to the awkward looking monogram, that first appeared on the Nike jumpers after they ditched the CFC based on the traditional team crest. The one on the puma jumpers has notches at the top, that are different widths to each other and to the rest of the F. It is a shocking design that should never have been allowed to be used. I can’t believe no one has picked up this obvious error. Even the signage at Ikon Park has this monogram on it, and so does the AFLW team. It aggravates my OCD! If I played for the club I would use white out to align the notches.

Below are two monograms I think look good, one is the one based on the traditional crest, while the other is the sublimated one with the shading (unfortunately it’s hard to see because it is on a “blue out” training top).

It's a Nike design, that's why. Probably don't even have the equipment or patience to do it.
I see. You must agree that the current block style CFC is a debacle? It’s not symmetrical. I don’t know who designed it. Nike used it too, until they came up with improved monogram.

The application of the monogram is disappointing as it's not raised on the guernsey, yes. However, provide a monogram used in footy that is symmetrical? An 'F' cannot be symmetrical when combined with a 'C' (or two).

Nike did not design the monogram, this has been around since the late 1920s, in various forms due to hand-stitching. And I meant that the 3D effects were Nike's. Puma hasn't bothered trying in the public eye.

I realize that this style of monogram has been around since the 1920’s, however the current version of it looks cheap. It could easily be symmetrical as it’s sublimated as opposed to stitched on.

If the designers could not get it right they had other options. The options being a) bring back the rounded CFC based on the old club crest, that was used prior to the current one, b) use the CFC design that has no notches on top. The one that Jason Knitting Mills used on their retail jumpers in the 1970’s, c) bring back the actual stitched interlocking one (unfortunately that will never happen, because it would be too expensive).

I have spoken to several Carlton fans who are unhappy with this design. They just want the rounded CFC back. It was a striking design.

This is monogram is based on the Jason Knitting Mills 1970’s retail one. It would be an acceptable for Carlton to use this one now.

First ISC jumper in the collection. Nice design, horrible material. Love the black AFL logo.

It’s a good looking top, but the pin striped woolen jumpers in the 1970’s, and early 1980’s, never had pin stripes on the sleeves.

The sleeveless version looks awesome. In fact this is my favorite Collingwood jumper of the modern era. It looks like their ones from 1977.

While I do love the rounded CFC from the 2010s for nostalgia and branding purposes, the current monogram is bold and strong to me. It's a perfect mix of traditional, yet modernised for this era. The fans literally voted this design in so those several fans should have made their voices heard. If you want to talk about symmetry though, look how aligned the 'F' is in the 150th logo. The top of the 'F' is too far to the right, and the bottom of the F is too far to the left! So symmetry is not what makes a great logo. It's not 'perfect', and that's okay.
Carlton_Football_Club_150th_anniversary_logo.png
As a younger fan, I reeeeally dislike that 70s monogram you've attached. It just looks tacky to me. Yes the Cs are symmetrical, but it's just not how Carlton wants to represent itself these days. We have consistent branding now, let's hope it stays around for a while.

Mods, should we move this discussion to a more relevant thread?
