I'm pretty conservative with my captain choices as you can see. I subscribe to the theory that if Ablett is playing, he is my captain. Served me well last year as it has done again this year for the most part.

how do you go about choosing?
do you have some sort of system, or is it just gut feel?

Average a touch over 100. Some pretty ordinary captain choices/performances this year, but Cox has bailed me out of trouble recently.

Going with the reigning charlie medalist this week, good luck to you Jimmy :thumbsu:

No set system, more of a combination of research and gut feeling (and then rely on luck and hope they don't get injured!). Doubt I am doing anything more spectacular than most but have probably just been pretty lucky that most of my choices have done well.

My process is usually:

1. See which teams are playing each other which often gives a few "obvious" options (eg without looking at figures, you would think that Cox would score highly against a team with average rucks such as Carlton).
2. Think about who a player's likely direct opponent will be (eg if they are playing Port and I think they will be against Kane Cornes I'm unlikely to pick them).
3. Look at their recent form. I tend to go with "in form" players rather than players that are "due" (ie out of form!).
4. Look at their history against that team (I use the Fanfooty site for this which has been a great research tool for me). This is probably the most important consideration for me. Even if they have been in great form I generally won't pick someone if they have struggled against their upcoming opponent.
5. If there is any doubt over whether a player is 100% fit, then I try to avoid selecting them (I have nearlly picked JB a couple of times but have ruled him out as I wasn't convinced he was 100% fit).
6. If in doubt between a midfielder and a forward, I generally take the midfielder based on the assumption that a "bad" game for the midfielder is likely to score me more points than a "bad" game for a forward.

The only time that i went against my system was with Ablett in round 14 and that turned out to be my lowest score!! Despite all the research suggesting that Ablett would struggle against Adelaide, i decided that his form was too great to ignore. Was a good reminder to stick with the research!!

I'm looking forward to next season (my 3rd) when I can actually get the starting team that I want (had my team on a spreadsheet which was considerably different to the one I had originally entered online and got stuck in the damn lockout rush - oh well lesson learnt!). Have nearlly made it into the top 1000 (now 1010th) after starting with some absolute duds (Ryan Murphy, Nickoski, NJ Brown, Hartlett and Koschitzke are a few that come to mind) and being over 7000th at round 9.

Will take the chance to thank the regular posters (such as yourself!) on this site. I only discovered it part way through the season but have picked up some great advice and some handy tips. Also has been very useful for picking up vital info such as late withdrawals and injury updates.

Cheers
