What is your most heartbreaking loss?

A post from 2014... If only I knew what was to come. Yes, Blood on the tracks is one of the greatest albums ever released.
Yes, one album, where every track is excellent. Underrated Lily Rosemary and the Jack of Hearts. Still play it almost weekly.

Almost a movie in itself

2013 Elimination final. The first final I've ever been to and Carlton beat us. Boo
2001 prelim because I was a kid and didn't understand it properly. I cried and locked myself in my room the next day lol.

The grand finals hurt but the most heartbreaking loss for me was
Round 9 2000 v Western Bulldogs

Had not won a game all season to this point and 5 goals up at 3/4 time
Lost by 1 point

I will never forget the back page of the herald sun the next day with a big picture of Max Hudghton in tears and it said who said they don't care

Was too young to remember 1991, but 2005 stung, it was the first gf loss I'd really experienced. 2006 did kind of make up for it, losing TWO gfs in a row by such a small margin would've been shattering, like Saints in 09-10. 2015 gf I just felt empty. We'd beaten the Hawks in a QF but it just seemed we couldn't beat a Melbourne team in a gf, that's why 2018 felt like such vindication. Not a specific game but both the 2007 and 2019 seasons were really deflating, it just seems we never get a real chance to defend our premiership and go b2b.

2017GF.

Smashed Richmond at Adelaide Oval a few weeks prior only to get smashed in the Granny at their home ground.
They obviously deserved a home GF in this compromised comp as they are Victorian. Not salty much.

There has been a lot.

Hardest one to swallow was probably GF in 1997. But saints have played in 4 grand finals since 1971 (not counting the replay) lead in 3 of them at 3/4 time and lost the lot.

Had the cd in the car and the lp on the turntable locked in for months now, so good.

Love some of the “New York mix” versions too, especially idiot wind, incredible.

It's an incredible album, not only because every track is basically A+ but the circumstances Dylan was in in his life.

I read an excellent book about the recording of the album you should check out if you're interested.

Also, get More blood More tracks 6 CD set, it's an amazing listen.

Looking forward to it. I’m working my way through the Bootleg sessions slowly, I’ve only been listening to dylan for about two or three years. A lot of ground to cover!

The Good Friday 129 point game.
Bruce goes from 7 to 10 goals within the last 10 minutes and my heart sunk more with every goal.
This was the night I realised this club was a long way away from being competitive again.

2012 GF. Possibly from a neutral point of view it's the best and most dramatic GF in recent memory but horrendous for me personally. Was living in Sydney at that time, that's bad enough. Went to the game via bus (back seat next to the toilet both ways... apt really). Standing room. The highs, the lows... then the ultimate low. Every stat Hawks' way except the score.

In addition to the loss, had to cop all the campaigners at work who probably thought Lockett was still playing for them talking up the win. It was very hard to be magnanimous. (no surprise it was crickets from them in 2014)

Probably don't go on to win the next 3 GF's if not for that loss... but it was shithouse at the time and for a long time thereafter.

2017 vs St Kilda. The one where we got flogged.

We had just beaten Port and looked on track for the four. The excitement was real.

I remember being gutted after that loss. I finally had hope for us until we got ****ing stomped into the ground and looked like we would tumble out of the 8. It was 2016 vs the swans all over again.

Ironically, the saints got smashed by essendon the next week and were the ones to fall out of the 8.

It's still so hard to believe that we only lost one more game for the rest of the year and won the flag. Now I look back at that game and smile, but at the time I was genuinely devastated and had lost all hope for the team.

I would have said the 2018 prelim, but I dont think we would have won in 2019 and 2020 without that loss.

Buffy.
She was only 15. Used to sleep on warm car tyres in winter. Had to check all 4 wheels before going anywhere. A great mother, protective of her kids, stern at times. Would disappear in the evenings. You'd hear screaming in the dark of night, hoping it wasn't her. It never was. She was extremely affectionate and would crawl into bed with you and lie in your body concave. I tripped over her one day when she was hungry and trying to lead me to the fridge. Spent some time laid up with a cracked coccyx. She hung around a lot, checking on me, aware of her involvement in my demise. So many childhood memories are entwined with her, it's both meloncholic and heartwarming at the same time. Even after all these years.

Geez, I never realised that. That's bloody cruel.

Anzac Day 1992. Dees up by 7 goals at 3/4 time, and Greg Anderson put his Superman cape on. Bombers kick 8 in the last, get up by one.

It was the first time that 11yo me was genuinely crushed by sport.
