the worst AFL nightmare would be a grand final loss after leading all game, only to concede a goal after the siren. Imagine the heartbreak of seeing victory slip away in the final seconds.

At least you’d have got to a grand final. The melts on the sack Ken threads would be hilarious

Might be because I'm a Carlton fan and we haven't sniffed a Grand Final but just making the GF wouldn't be a big consolation in that instance.

This would be up there.

The arrogance of the AFLPA president to post this, with the intention of riling people up, is staggering enough.

Using something SO Americanised like the NBA as the example is even more laughable.

It's a sport that realistically only needs 1 quarter anyway, and they play 80 games a season with a best of 7 play-off to crown a champion. It isn't comparable in any way to Australian rules football.

The nightmare here, of course, being a return to Covid era final scores because Patrick Dangerfield likes basketball. A trifecta of dogshit.

Reduce the mark / freekick time from 10 seconds to 5 seconds & goal set shots from 30 seconds to 15 seconds once the player is set behind the mark. But then again, video reviews would likely extend the quarters anyway.

Probably an evolution into an over-coached game that completely loses the fabric of what makes Aussie Rules great - contested play, risk taking, rewarding great skill more than punishing mistakes.

That and/or the broadcasters having their way too much so that we get time outs, longer breaks between goals, less footy, so they can up the portion of time dedicated to advertising. Or turning into BBL with even more annoying ground announcers, music during the game and god knows what other form of sensory assault they come up with.

Terrorist attack at the MCG on Grand Final day

A team plane or bus crashing resulting in a team losing more than half of its team and the majority of key players. Not sure how the fixturing would work to salvage a season.

Fitzroy ending in 1996 was the worst thing that happened, 100 season VFL/AFL tenure and essentially folding and giving their entire brand away to Brisbane. South Melbourne moving would be another worst nightmare, but at least kept the same squad/admin but many consider that folding, too. Losing a Western Derby/Showdown grand final would be a on-field worst nightmare.

The 7 prelims prior to 2016.
2021 grand final, Bulldogs 19 points up with only 8 minutes left in the third quarter to end up losing by 74 points. That would be a major kick in the guts, worst in-game nightmare in a grand final. Even with thrashings in grand finals it's over quickly, but to lose by 13 goals, when you're up by 4 goals that deep into the 3rd term is insane.

I still think making the grand final is something as an achievement and the week to take part in, compared to missing out every time. Therefore not the worst.

We most likely get over the line in extra time I agree and that makes it worse that they then change it after the event!
I watched that game again, I hate how Milne is blamed for not somehow teleporting to a ball that was well out of his reach with a goal needed, but for whatever reason Jason Blake having the ball literally come to him at his feet, with space, 25 metres from goal, with 34 seconds to go for a quick crumb and point only needed, he soccers it back to the opposition, and that is totally ignored by everyone in retrospect.

All our 200,000 first round draft picks are spuds and we sink into another 37 year abyss and I’m one of those old men in a wheelchair at the 2062 grand final giving an interview to channel 7 that talks about how great Dustin Martin was and I just go on and on but the 28 year old women interviewer can’t find the right time to cut me off because it’s rude to do that to old people and then some w***er like Luke Darcy type says something like ‘he certainly spin a tale’ with some shit eating grin.
