What was daily life like in the 80s/90s/00s?

The very best days!!! No PC bullshit and society back then weren’t full of highly offended cupcakes. People seemed a lot happier back then and weren’t up to their necks in debt.

You worked or went to school and the weekends were for sport and socialising.

Hard drugs weren’t as rife, and having a beer and a chat in a pub was affordable!!!

Life was simpler back then and a hell of a lot better!!!

Pre 00’s:

No responsible service of alcohol rules and cheap drinks at bars - plenty of $1 shooter or cheap beer promos, and even all you can drink packages at some places.

Saturday and sunday mornings watching Rage and/or Recovery.

No internet, 4 tv stations, channels 2, 7, 9 and 10. Wanted to watch something different, Blockbuster or Video EZY were your only options. And most houses didn’t have a VCR until the mid-80’s.

Music was expensive, $30 for an album.

Actually, everything except booze and petrol was expensive. TVs, cars, sports equipment was expensive.

No email so work had a mailroom, need to send a form to another department, into the internal mail envelope.
I'd forgotten about shooter nite!

Girls wandering around with what was supposed to look like old timey cigarette trays, but instead it was all shooters served in test tubes being sold for $1

Encyclopaedias and library reference books were used to do school projects instead of the internet.

Looking for a job meant going to CES and looking at a board with cards stuck to it with job details.

If you arrange to meet someone but one of you has a change of plan, really difficult to make contact to cancel.

I personally appreciated the TV as it was, with just 5 stations, because often with Foxtel and the extra digital channels, there could literally be 70 shows available, and not one worth watching.

Pre mobile phones with cameras, there was the polaroid, but with other cameras you had no idea what the photos would look like until you had them developed.

After having a big Friday night in town or a local listening to live music I would stumble out of bed and head to the seasonal sport cricket or football. Watch the Bs and get ready at half time for the As.

Followed by a big night on the Saturday at the club win or lose - or someone had organised a party somewhere and off we went - mostly driving

Sunday was recovery and back to work Monday

Socialising was based around the club and dating was either someone from school , friends group or club based. Rarely might you meet someone at a nightclub who lived remotely close who you might chase up

And I am glad there were no cameras with some of the stuff I did and my friends did.

I feel sorry for people who didn't live through the 80s.
I started school in 1979 and left in 1990, there were lots of good things about the 1980s but they were tempered by the fact I spent every sodding year of it at school.

My mum used to tell me, "School days are the best days of your life". To which I replied, "Wow, the rest must really suck".

Watching the first episode of "That 90's Show" and I reckon I had the exact same shirt Eric is wearing back in the 90's. I Someone bought it for me - girlfriend probably. I didn't wear it much. Thought it was pretty ugly even by standards of the day!

ETA: This ugly shirt

  • The Seven Network is working on a potential new lifestyle show. Actress Noni Hazlehurst has hosted a pilot which is now with Seven executives for consideration. “If it goes ahead, it probably won’t be on before the end of the year,” a Seven spokesperson said.
They should call it Better Gardens and Homes

Sunday: Sunday afternoon AFL includes Sydney Swans versus Carlton (1pm, Seven), live from Sydney, followed by Adelaide Crows versus Brisbane Bears (3.30pm, Seven), live from Adelaide. Sunday night movies are Captain Ron (Seven), Double Jeopardy (Nine) and Home Alone (repeat, Ten).

Ahh Sunday footy - best way to watch it live . Finished with my weekend sport then Footy Sunday followed by the Sunday night movie before starting the week of work
