What was this years "Grand Final Moment"

3rd quarter: When Paul Chapman fell to ground in the forward pocket at the Punt Rd end, his Magpie opponent falling into his back and 10,000 Geelong fans screaming for the free kick. Chappy went to ground so fast, I initially thought he must've been shot by a sniper on the Southern Stand roof.

Brilliant decision-making from the umpires to ignore this blatant staging and wave 'play-on'. The umps get roasted for their mistakes, but I thought this was umpiring from the top-shelf. One of the best umpiring decisions I have ever seen in a Grand Final. It appeared to be an obvious free kick for 'in the back'.

Most umpires would've fallen for it in the heat of the moment. Chapman has probably milked that type of fall for a free kick at least 200 times in his career. Matthew Lloyd was rightfully castigated for taking the dive throughout his career, but I think Paul Chapman is at least his equal, maybe better.

Great umpiring, which made for a very good Grand Final.

made me laugh too (and cringe a bit) - dying to know who Johnson's spray was aimed at, I'm imagining it was Leigh Brown but I may be wrong ..

not the wittiest of sledges, but got his point across in no uncertain terms ;)

Pretty sure it was Chris Tarrant.

The stud marks on StevieJ's hand might be the clue on why he gave him a mouthful.

Love the Christensen mark video for the following (besides the sh*thot mark):

The kick to Bartel was at his feet, thought at the time oh shit that might go through his legs. Nah not with Jimmeh.

Ottens throwing Reid out of the way like an old rag doll, yeah he got alot more of that as time went by.

The Hawkins perfect little soccer that was always just going to evade the diving Tarrant.

What a GF moment.

Wonder who's hurting more, Collingwood supporters or Chewy :D:thumbsu:

Notice how fast Chapman got rid of the footy? Wasn't a dive at all.

In actual fact the umpiring was poor on many occasions, with several soft and non-existant free kicks going to Collingwood, but you probably missed those somehow.

I just want to quote this, so more people can see how sad it is.

For me it was Bartel's clutch goal from outside 50 in the fourth quarter that basically sealed the deal. The blatant bump he gave Dawes in his post-goal celebration gave me a smile. What a champ.

A bit obscure perhaps, but there was a piece of play early in the third quarter that I thought set the scene for what was about to happen. At the time I thought Pendlebury's effort was pretty poor & watching the replay only confirmed my initial view. I thought it was indicative of the way the Pies played early in the third term & the following passage of play that resulted in a Hawkins goal, underlined the greater ferocity the Cats were beginning to play with.
Watch from the 4:40 mark on the video.

I think mackies tackle, then turns around spoils it on the boot deserves a mention.. was a great moment to see him play like that. Lots of moments but

Good pick up. Very unlike Pendlebury.

There was a passage where Chapman looked to pull out of a contest, and I thought "jeez, this ain't a good sign". But Collingwood seemed to pull out of a few more, and some Geelong players who are known for that went in hard. Was the difference in the end.

Nick Maxwells stuff ups higlighting how much of a crap player he is.
You do know he was playing with a broken thumb, then broke his knuckle in the first quarter?

Oh sorry, I mistook you for someone intelligent.

I thought it was Bartel's snap from the boundary just before half-time. Everyone thought the Cats would be very happy to go in 15 points down, Pies were right on top and all of a sudden Geelong were only three points down.

It was unbelievably clutch as well. I remember asking a mate next to me, "why's he going the snap? There's not that much angle, he could drop punt it". :D

Christensen's mark was just proof it was the Cats day.

It appears every year, there is a moment in the grand final that either turns the momentum of the game, or a moment that is remembered for a while

2007 GF: Chapmans mark

What was the defining moment of this years grand final

In 2007, it was the opening bounce. This year I think it was Christensen's contested mark to set up that crucial goal.

J-Pod going down. Strange but true.
Pies got the goal after the stoppage but Cat's got the next 3 just before half time when all thought their forward structure would be shot.
Also just prior to the stoppage Pies had been having a purple patch and I expected them to go further in front.

I agree with this^^^ and was just about to write the same thing.

Also believe that the disrespectful "Colliiinngwoood" chant that started up when J-Pod was stretched off angered the football gods. Call it bad karma if you like.

Served the typically unsavoury Collingwood supporters right that Geelong came through in the end.

when geelong supporters started taking the piss out of the collingwood by using the chant but it was ggggeeeeeeellllllooooooonnnnngggggg

no one moment but rather minutes - the last 10-12 mins of the 2nd quarter turned the game. cats were looking likely to go to half time 3-5 goals down, but some huge individual efforts in those mins plus the non mark call to swan in the back pocket, combined to turn it back the cats way

J-pod going down definitely helped the cats, I stated it at the time to my mates who thought I was trolling.

I do recall the chapman incident, vs shaw ... shaw went full ball, chapman could have as well but stopped in his tracks waiting to tackle, was very dissapointing his game was not that great but he did some good things too.

I remember seeing that and thinking Chappy should have gone harder. But I think players are now coached not to bump because of the possible consequences.

How exactly did Pods going down help the Cats?

They were 16 points down when Pods was subbed and they went on to win by 38.

But yeah, people talk of the change in structure, perhaps Tomahawk realising he has to step up as the sole tall forward, and the match-ups baffling Collingwood. I think Maxwell said something about him not being given an appropriate match-up when Geelong reshuffled their forward line.
