What's going on with Carlton's list

What I wanted when I created this thread was a constructive discussion to address the crisis of youth at the Carlton Football Club. What a didn't want was a collage of excuses from Carlton supporters on the state of their list. If you don't want to face reality go back to the Carlton board. We're problem solving here!
No you're not problem solving. You're sensationalising. Sure there might be some issues, but that doesn't make it a crisis.

Thank you for once againh highlighting your total football ignorance ...it's can't ber easy to back up post after post with such complete and utter rubbish ....kudos to you .
Exactly, when I started this thread I wanted arguments backed up with facts. If Slattery 20 wants to keep on posting that kind of rubbish he should stick to his own board. Everyone knows that Scotland had a career best season this year.

So of our potential "star" juniors we have:

Chris Yarran (significant time spent sidelined) Missed 4 weeks
Matthew Kreuzer (recovering from knee injury, had some exceptional games) Now 2 1/2 years after knee injury.
Kane Lucas (played well early on but fell out of form)
Mitch Robinson (Injury plagued, consistent niggles) Missed 4 weeks
Lachlan Henderson (Injury)
Jeremy Laidler (Played very well early but injured for year)
Matthew Watson (KPD early in career, played some very good games)
Levi Casboult (Really hit some form late, very few games, recovering from PCL)
Bryce Gibbs (Down year, performed better late)
Luke Mitchell (injured early)

So of all those potential place getters, 7 were injured, one is a KPD (who was injured for last 5 games) and the other 2 underperformed.

"star" implies potential BnF' place getters
Really 3 were injured for long enough that it's an excuse for polling badly
EDIT: Saw Robinson was 8-10th, so his injury probably prevented him polling in the top 7

Robinson missed 4 weeks and polled 9th.

Yarran missed 4 weeks, but played injured in several other games, Essendon, Adelaide off the top of my head.

Kreuzer had persistent problems with swelling around his knee. Club expects this to improve with another pre-season and more recovery time

How about we review this thread next year

The fact still remains no one under the age of 25 placed in the top 7 of their b&f. Where is the natural improvement coming from and who is responsible for developing young talent?

Results from Carlton's b&f:

1. Heath Scotland - 32
2. Eddie Betts - 25
3. Chris Judd -29
4. Brock Maclean - 26
5. Marc Murphy 25
6. Andrew Carazzo - 28
7. Kade Simpson - 28

The fact that there is not one player under the age of 25 in the top 7 of their b&f count has to be a huge concern. This is a club who in recent years has spent more time on the bottom of the ladder and had greater access to high draft picks than any other. Where are they? Why haven't any of them developed into the players that many thought they would come. Whose fault is it? The recruiters? The development staff? We should be seeing a side ready to peak and have a genuine tilt at the flag, yet instead all that exists is a veteran list on the cusp of collapse. Is this failure to develop youth now a crisis, and if so, how can Carlton go about changing what seems to be an entrenched culture of mediocrity?

Discuss.

You have gone down the wrong track. The obvious omission from the top 10 was that Kruezer was the only key position player in the top 10 (and he had a pretty average year). Our biggest issue all year was injury to KPP and also key mids. Once we get a decent run with injuries we will be back in the 8 and pushing for top 4.

Out of the list you provided, scotland is nearing retirement and on current form will probably play another 2 years. The others have 4+ years left so dont see a problem with their age.

Interesting you left out Gibbs, robinson and kruezer who are all under 25 and finished 8-10th in b&f, but that would defeat the purpose of your thread.

Maybe I'm missing the point, but isn't it normal to expect most of the better and more consistent performers at a club to be those with several pre seasons under their belt and in the prime of their careers. If you expect youngsters to come in and regularly outperform the senior players, I reckon that is more of an indictment on the overall quality of a club's list.

I'd argue that this kind of thinking is central to the youth crisis down at the Blues

Right. So because you think we don't have youth coming through, we should only deal with their performance this year. Let's do this by draft classes:

2008: Yarran, Robinson, O'keefe, Garlett

Yarran suffered a toe injury in Round 4, played through, but missed games intermittently. Loss of pace hurt his performances. Regained some form late

Robinson had a good year, but 4 games missed cost him some opportunities. When he came back late played forward without effect as his endurance suffered due to hamstring injury

O'Keefe has spent more time in the infirmary then on the field. Downgraded to rookie list but there are high hopes

Garlett played every game but struggled for effect for a large portion of the year. Still kicked 30+ goals

2009: Lucas, Davies, Casboult, White, Tuohy

Lucas played early games but struggled to break seniors despite some good VFL form. A change of coach may improve his standing

Davies played some senior games but missed a lot of the year due to injury. Fringe player

Casboult started the year off with a PCL. That he even played football is remarkable

White spent the entire preseason injured. A solid depth player

Tuohy had a lot of buzz early, and had some good games. Irish convert needs to work on reading of the play.

2010: Watson, McCarthy, Mitchell, McInnes, Curnow

Watson is a second year key position player who played some good games mid-season before injury

McCarthy is a prospect but not physically ready. KPP

Mitchell played the final game after starting the year with a shoulder reco. KPF

McInnes showed some good form as a stopper late in the year, did an ACL

Curnow played games, but isn't amazing at anything.

2011: Bootsma, Rowe, Buckley

Bootsma is a cult figure who more closely resembles a clown wig on a hatstand than an AFL footballer. Exciting prospect IMO

Rowe. Cancer :(

Buckley weighs about as much as one of Aaron Sandilands fingers. Good goal sense and can take off, long term prospect.

In that group I think you could reasonably expect improvement out of. Well all of them.

Robinson played in quite a couple of a games with a broken hand and issues with his calf. Kreuzer was getting his knee drained before every game for the majority of the season and Yarran was dealing with turf toe which basically ruins a players chance of having a good season.

Well, that's the path that that rubbish club in Sydney have gone down, but what do they know?
Dees go after draft picks every year, and look how well they're doing!

It's an underwhelming list no doubt, but it was an underwhelming year.

It's worth nothing that 7 of Sydney's top 10 in 2011 were over 25 as well. A 31 year old won it, a 29 year old came second and a 30 year old came 3rd...

By ladder position Sydney was definitely closer to a flag in 2011 than Carlton this year, but realistically the gap isn't that large.

I lol'd at this post.

Hardly a crisis bud. A crisis would be lack of experienced players or leaders at Melbourne....A crisis would be the fact that no-one wants to get near the coaching position at Port and their players dont want to stick around either.

Carlton has plenty of GOOD youth (not star players), we just had a horrid season all round and i reflected on everything. We've built up the last 5-8 years to have the squad we got now. NOW is our window. We should have been contenders in the last 2 seasons. Thus, why the board has made some tough (and cruel) decisions this year.

And this year will be similar. Not sure if JPK has yet hit 25 but he'll be the youngest finisher in the top half dozen. I think two players under 24 are a good chance to finish top 10 (Jetta and Hannebery).
