Just watched The Game (1997) with Michael Douglas and Sean Penn. Honestly, I thought it was over the top and terrible and had not aged well at all. Could spot the twist a mile away too. Was extremely surprised to see all the great reviews on IMDB (7.8???). Usually IMDB is reasonably spot on for me (law of averages and all) but I'd give this one a 4 or 5 out of 10.
Agree. Never understood the hype about it.

Started the new year by watching The Dark Knight trilogy :D. It's been about 5-6 months, time for a re-watch!

Love it, one of the better film trilogies of all time and indeed from the 2000- film era.
Absolutely agreed :thumbsu:

Sicario, Just rewatched it since I saw it at the movies. Brilliant Del Toro, Blunt and Brolin all fantastic.
Denis Villeneuve is my new favourite director.

This movie, Prisoners, Arrival I can't help but have high hopes for the new blade runner. 9/10

Denis is quite brilliant....to date.

Shame that only a few bring up Enemy when discussing his films. Not an easy one to get on-side with, but if you do......it's well worth it.

War Dogs - 6/10. Watched it on a plane, it was OK. Enjoyable enough flick to kill a couple of hours.

Rogue One - 8.5/10. Loved it. First 15 mins or so weren't great as everything was trying to be established but from there it was fantastic. Ties together parts of the story fantastically.

Passengers - 3/10. So disappointing. Pratt and Lawrence were fine but the story was just predictable and kinda lame. For a movie that I assume was meant to be a thriller it just didn't build any tension.

Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates - 6.5/10. Has some funny moments and I love Aubrey Plaza. Like a lot of comedies these days you pretty much know if you're gonna like or not just by looking at the cast. Adam Devine is a pisser as usual, when he walks in on his sister that was gold.

War Dogs - 7/10. Not bad at all, had a bit of a Wolf of Wall Street feel about it. Pretty interesting story and held my attention throughout.

Ghostbusters remake - 2/10. Oh wow. Visuals were nice and colourful....but what a train wreck.

Assassin's Creed

Like the games, the best thing about the movie are the historical scenes. Not merely because this is where the action takes place, contrary, the modern-day scenes are quite action-packed, but because the game's charm is in it allowing the player to live vicariously in a setting they'll never experience, and I think the movie does a great job of capturing that aspect and immersing you in that detail. Also like Kurzel's previous film, Macbeth, he along with cinematographer Adam Arkapaw really have a knack for creating these splendidly-lit arenas. The historical setting is really beautiful. The modern day material is bland, which works for contrast, but isn't helped by an equally bland storyline. Te one plus being Fassbender's performance who gives his all in the scenes that really require him to.

Nowhere near the unmitigated disaster reviews led me to believe it was. Much better than Warcraft, for example.

Passengers

Begins interestingly enough, placing Chris Pratt into a hopeless situation, letting him stew in it for a while, before raising an intriguing moral dilemma before falling once more but this time in to some really bad Hollywood cliches for the remaining 60-90 minutes.

Utterly uninteresting filmmaking-wise as well. Pass.

Hostage, starring Bruce Willis.

A slightly above average thriller, a spontaneous TV watch since it was on free to air. A rushed ending was a let down to an otherwise engaging film.

7/10

Deepwater Horizon - fairly solid 7 / 10. I like most stuff that Marky Mark is in.

The Accountant - 8 / 10. Thoroughly enjoyed.

Arrival – 8/10

The thinking person’s alien film, enjoyed it, although found the ending a little too implausible compared to the generally good science that came before it.

Saw it at the outdoor cinema, and Venus was bright as a mutha****a, not to mention all the other stars, which added brilliant atmosphere and a perfect backdrop to contemplate the film / our place in the cosmos.

Think I might see all space films at outdoor cinemas from now on.

RED DOG - True Blue

Not a patch on the 1st movie.
Less laughs , less tears ( thankfully - i was on hormone-replacement therapy for a month after the 1st 1.)

Still , final scene here when

Mick flies away to leave for school and Blue chases the helico........oh ****..........excuse me....( reaches for raw steak )

thank god i had the nephew there to help me keep the lip stiff

The office Xmas party - 1/5

Thought it was going to be good something like horrible bosses or what but I so wasn't impressed. I like Jennifer Aniston movies as well.

USS Indianapolis with Nicholas Cage.

I watched the mini-series, Mission of the Shark about 25 years ago and quite liked it. The character of Quint makes mention of this true event in the original Jaws.

I was thinking about Mission of the Shark for some reason on Tuesday and I looked online yesterday and hey presto, there's USS Indianapolis. I didn't even know that this movie had been made/existed. I read some reviews but ignored them because I'm interested in the subject matter.

3/10. I didn't like it.

La La Land

Sumptuous. Queen Emma reigns. Gos is God.

Gonna be Spotifying the shit outta that soundtrack for yonks.

Playing keytar in an 80s band with that awesome get-up is my uber wish-fulfilment...

The Edge of Seventeen: Good funny film. Very effective timing with the jokes and heartfelt at the same time. Some great minor performances here including the always good Woody Harrelson and Hayden Szeto (a name to remember for the future) and a top central performance from Hailee Steinfield. 8/10

Finally gave Suicide Squad a watch . It really could've been a lot better couldn't it. Forgettable plot, and subplots were just either irrelevant (The Joker) or just discarded (what happened to the guard who was "so screwed?").

Margot was sooo good, and Will Smith...maybe someone more badass could've played Deadshot but then again, he has such a presence on screen he left most of the bland others for dead.

There was still enough I liked to give it 5.5/10 but yeah it was just a bit of a mess overall I thought.
