Blood Father with Mel Gibson last night, best part about it was that it only ran for eighty minutes.

You know early on things are not gonna go well when you find yourself barracking for the bad guys.

3/10 for the film, 3/10 for Gibsons "performance."

Wakefield - I cant say this was poorly made or acted but has to be one of most pointless movies Ive seen in a long time.

It didnt know if it wanted to funny or a drama or what it wanted to say about the main character. It definitely did not want to be dark though, if they bothered to truly explore that it may have given the movie some logical progression.

Also I hate the fact movie endings are so predictbable these days but the only thing worse than a bad ending is no ending.

Late around seeing this but it was worth the wait. A great film. Gibson for all his faults is a talented film maker. Based on the true story of Desmond Dross. This wastes no time getting in to things after a brief prologue, and within 22 minutes we have the central character go from childhood to marriage (yes I timed it). I was worried things were going to be very uneven, but after the opening third of setting up his home life we're quickly taken to the beginning of his service and the challenges he has to overcome to be deployed, and then deployment. All of these parts are fantastic. The acting is top notch (except for Sam Worthington, who tries, but the guy just can't hide his Aussie accent at all and it sticks out) by the mostly local cast. It's a real triumph of local film on the Hollywood stage.

There's lots of emotional weight that is importantly backed up by the confronting visuals (something not possible for a lower rating). The battle scenes I had trouble following at the start, but they soon developed in to a cohesive setting that has to the best the best war movie choreography since We Were Soldiers. It's a great story that is well written and translates to the big screen. Garfield does a great job in the lead, Hugo Weaving is fantastic as his troubled father, Vince Vaughn nails his out of character role as does the rest of his squad. The effects are brilliantly horrifying at capturing the carnage and it never borders of pretentious, which is quite an achievement given the source material. I can only fault it for its pacing at times, and the presentation of some aspects of the true story not being entirely disclosed (example, Dross worked over many weeks and months, but the film makes it look like one big night of rescues after one day of battle).

9/10
Wasn't a fan, thought it was basically a piece of macho man bible bashing propaganda. It was basically the kind of war film that they stopped making 40 years ago imo.

dunkirk 8.5/10 - has grown on me as ive been dwelling on the horror and scale of war over the few days since i saw it.

baby driver - 9/10 - just straight up a very enjoyable movie to watch. well cast, great soundtrack and good amount of action. probably my favourite movie of the year.

Macho Man? The main character is a pacifist. It's also a true story, so bible bashing propaganda or not, it really happened and has been told in an honest way representative of the real life events.

Don't like the film as much as you want, but to criticise the actual story isn't really a problem you can have with the movie.

The movie was based based on a true story and is just an interpretation of that story and its fair game imo :drunk:. Since when does the fact that something is based on a true story make it immune to criticism that is pro American/pro Jesus propaganda? It was an ordinary film for a variety of other reasons too btw including stupid script, over the top violence and bad acting (Sam Worthington lol.)

It's not immune tto criticism at all, but it's little strange to me to take issue with a significant part of the movie that's based on real life, and is not an interpretation, then to hold it against that movie.

The main guy was a bible basher, and his beliefs are highly relevant to his character.
He was American.
He was a war hero.

Like, which part of that should be toned down for appeal and does that do the real life people and events justice?

Like, that other stuff is fair game, especially Worthington, but those particular elements are pretty hard to leave out.

Dunkirk - heart rate shot to about 160 from the first minute and stayed there throughout, glad it was only an hour and half cause I don't think I could have taken much more. That score is a masterpiece. 8.5/10
0/10 for the drunken ***** next to us ducking to the loo every few minutes for a bump, why go to a movie, much less gold class.

Argo

Finally got around to watching this last night. Not too sure how much poetic license was used in making it but it was an interesting plot at the very least. Not normally a fan of Ben Affleck but I thought he was decent. Had a good cast overall actually.

Baby Driver

Obnoxious.

Dunkirk

Technically brilliant. Emotionally inert. So I watched it in numb awe and admiration.

Cars 3

The only reason I fork out for these movies (besides the beautiful animation) is to hopefully see that dickhead Lightning McQueen spectacularly crash and die in a raging ball of fire...

You seem like fun

Colossal
Gloria is an out-of-work party girl forced to leave her life in New York City, and move back home. When reports surface that a giant creature is destroying Seoul, she gradually comes to the realization that she is somehow connected to this phenomenon. I found this an enjoyable film with some deep undercurrents that give the characters depth, and though the ending is somewhat predictable, it still delivers on a certain level. This movie won't blow you away, but it's definitely satisfying viewing. 7/10

The writer/director must have been on some pretty good drugs to produce this. The concept is pretty crazy that Anne Hathaway has a mental connection to a Kaiju. It's one of those movies that could really suck by descending into boring action/destruction but it stays character based and is better for it. I enjoyed it. 7/10.

Yeah, very good. Soundtrack and action were tops. It was almost like two movies stuck together. At the start it was quirky but later it was more serious but the main character was consistent throughout. Spacey phoned it in and Lily James was gorgeous as ever.

Lego Batman with my 4yr old. Pretty funny but Batman was a bit of a tosser. Not sure if it was the point - GOB Blueth nailed it.

The little bloke loved it has been played numerous times now.

Saw Dunkrik last night. Really enjoyed it. Very intense and really did well at conveying the fear and helplessness of it all. Sound and score were amazing. I thought Branagh, Rylance and Murphy were the standout actors. Hardy's character was badass. I liked that it was non-linear and you really only learned the names of a few characters.

Seeing Dunkirk the other day inspired me to watch some of the actors other stuff:

Bridge of Spies - I can see why Mark Rylance was so lauded now. Interesting film with some good suspense. Rylance sensitive and measured performance as the honorable spy (like something out of a Graham Greene novel) being the highlight 7/10.

The Drop
- Been interested in this one for a while as it feature two of the best current actors in the world imo in Tom Hardy and Matthias Schoenaerts. Can't think of many actors who have as big screen presence as these two but then you throw James Gandolfini into the mix in I think his final role and he almost steals the show! Seriously Tom Hardy can almost do anything. Plays something completely different to what i've seen him do and it really keeps you guessing. Great actor. Although it's not a great film it has a nice style and excellent actors and performances. 7.5/10

Dunkirk - 7/10, above average war movie but not great, too many historical inaccuracies distracted from the story. The scenes on the boat and the aircraft were well done (apart from the over the top hollywood ending with the Spitfire) but the story about the three cowards didn't do anything for me.

A Ghost Story

Truly something special and unique, a delicate kind of masterpiece. Reminded me a lot of Tree of Life but far less ponderous. Probably the best movie I've seen this year.

Planet of the APes - War for the Planet of the Apes

Went in relatively blind, without knowing what it was about other than woody harrelson, caesar and lots of guns.

The opening scene reminded us of previous movies in this series. Apes vs humans, guns, spears, dying. THen for me it got weird. Factions, betrayal, civil war.....irony. A fluent speaking ape who comes from the other side, he is almost and practically human! Reminded me of jar jar binks but brought comedic value to a degree.

A modified american flag flies
Who IS the enemy?
Mess with mother nature?

As I type I realised the title of the movie makes sense

War for THE planet of the Apes - a preview of whats to come.....the planet becomes Ape City. And we go back to the start, where it all began. Can someone say sequel/prequel/reboot?

Its probably the sleep deprivation in me, but Im confused about what I just watched.

No apes were harmed during the filming of the movie

I think they will make more films.

So many decades and years would have passed from the end of war right up to the original film. would be great to see how the Apes evolved and how they ruled the Earth.
