The Lost City of Z: James Gray is one of my favorite directors and imo not really capable of making a bad film. It takes a while to get going but is pretty compelling the whole way through despite feeling a little bit mild and unconnected in parts. The performance are fine. Robert Pattinson in particular is excellent and has become a really fine actor. 7.5/10

Death Note

Another swing-and-a-miss for Netflix and director Adam Wingard alike. Neither are having much luck at the moment. I don't know anything of the source material but I can't imagine it was simplistic as 'Final Destination but with a Willem Dafoe monster' (maybe it is, I don't know) but it was pretty tired and worn material that said nothing of anything (certainly nothing Batman hasn't tried to say for 25 years). Tonally all over the place and pretty dull to. Pass.

The Lost City of Z

The fact that James Gray is having a hard time just making movies is an indictment on modern film culture, but it's also a testament to his dedication that he attempted something of this scale and executed it swimmingly. He almost made me think Charlie Hunnam is a good actor! The movie itself is breathtaking and one of the year's absolute best.

The Big Sick - a sweet movie with likeable characters and actors (even Ray Romano!). The movie is probably a bit slight, and while it's based on a true story it is probably most interesting for lovingly depicting the modern migrant/2nd generation story in America. The 98% rating on Rotten Tomatoes probably had me expecting a bit too much from it, basically expecting an Annie Hall of our times, but it was a good date movie, and nice to see, alongside Master of None on Netflix, these kinds of stories and characters getting told.

Deathnote;

Well, as far as disappointing pieces of s*** go, this is up there.
Manages to take some fantastically unique characters from the original anime and turn them into the most boring, stereotypical and predictable characters ever.

Putting aside my bias from having loved the original, the movie still felt very very rushed, disconnected and lots of things made no sense.

The only redeeming feature was Ryuk, who was creepy, well animated and fantastically voice-acted by Willem Dafoe.
Also Australian Crawl and INXS on the soundtrack. Cool.

3/10, I am intruiged to see what people who haven't seen the anime think of this turdburger.
I can't bring myself to watch it because I loved the anime so much. Best leave it that way me thinks.

American Made - Pretty slick and savvy film about sumgglers working for damn near everyone in the 70'2 and 80's, really well handled and a boatload of fun to boot. Cruise shines (seriously smarmy southern pilot smuggler is just in the little fellas wheelhouse) whilst Sarah Wright, Domhall Gleeson and Caleb Landry Jones all ably assist. 8/10

Riki-Oh: The Story of Ricky (1991) - Ridiculously fun, super violent, action movie from Hong Kong. About a young man with supernatural strength who's locked up and ends up trying to reform the corrupt system using martial arts. Knowingly cheesy at times, super gory at others as Ricky unleashes his super-strength punching holes through people and sending people flying. The dodgy special effects adds to it all. I laughed from start to finish. 9/10

Misery.

It's one that I had to re-watch because I was quite young when I last watched it and I recently read the book (well listened to the audiobook) for the first time. Kathy Bates really does nail the hell out of her character and gives it justice. James Caan is really good in it aswell. The book is considerably more disturbing though, even if the film is quite graphic in itself.

7.5/10

The Hitman's Bodyguard.

A big load of 'meh' this film was, thought it started out OK and then just got silly in the second and third acts and not the type of silly that I enjoy. The banter between Ryan Reynolds and Samual L Jackson was fun, but those guys could make just about any shit fun.

Also, why was Gary Oldman in this? He was completely wasted, the role he played could have been played by a random person off the street.

6/10

American Made

Almost as useless as The Dark Tower (could have sworn I saw this movie in February when it was called Gold and starred Matthew McConaughey).

Legit thought the same thing. :joycat:

I am going to see this purely for the RR factor alone.

So if you give it a 6, that'll bump it to a 7, maybe an 8 for me ;)

PS. 1 week to go.

Get Out (2017)
Certainly a novel approach to the horror genre. I enjoyed it, but if you're after a genuinely scary film then look elsewhere. 3.5 stars
Just watched it then. Definitely not a scary film but geez it's thought provoking and has alot of tension.

I really enjoyed it. Didn't realise till after that Jordan Peele directed, was pleasantly surprised due to his previous stuff.

Total Recall (1990) - Classic. Stills holds up well after all these years. Not that I've seen it, but I fail to see the need for the remake when the original has hardly dated at all. Smart, funny, cool special effects & Arnie kicking arse. Great movie. 8.5/10
