Continued in Part 7:

Quiz Show (1994, Disney+) - About a fixed American game show in the 1950's. A cross between Flight and Slumdog Millionaire. This had good performances and messages that nothing is more important than the truth and that individuals get scapegoated whilst conglomerates get away scot-free. These themes are usually like catnip to me but this had a fatal flaw of being boring. 5.5/10. Wanted to like it so much more.

That leaves 1994 as the first year I've seen all the Best Picture nominations. Hot take- I think this year is incredibly overrated.
Rankings are -
Four Weddings and a Funeral, 7.5/10
Shawshank, 7/10
Pulp, 6/10
Quiz Show, 5.5/10
Gump, 3/10

Beavis & Butthead do the universe

A product of its time, still chuckle

3/5

I was early 20s I think when this came out. I remember some older lady bringing her 10 year old kids along, she walked out in the first 10 minutes. :D

Something about sluts

That’s a hot, hot take on Shawshank and Pulp Fiction.

That’s a hot, hot take on Shawshank and Pulp Fiction.
I get Pulp was a unique for its time and important for the progression of film direction and narrative. I just didn’t feel their were any stakes or characters to invest in. The whole film I remember thinking “ok but why?”. Willis’ arc was especially wtf but not in a good way. Just didn’t connect with it at all although I admire its trailblazing nature.

Shawshank is good but doesn’t stand out from a plethora of redemption stories. Flight which I mentioned in previous post is one for example I enjoyed more. Cool Hand Luke was a more effective prison drama imo. Main gripe is the over simplified characterisation of good and evil. That’s ok for an action/superhero movie but not a prestige drama. Related- Red’s character was by far the most interesting. I remember three moments- Drinking beers on roof, reds speech and the escape. Many scenes about prison being the pits were either unenjoyable or tedious. Again, I thought it was good (7/10!) but far too contrived for any greatest films list imo (and hence why I’m being harsh).

Nine Days (2021)
"A man interviews five unborn souls to determine which one should be given a new life on Earth, with the unchosen ones facing oblivion"

This one will stick with me for a few days. Impressive storytelling restraint from a first time director/writer, and amazing performances from the cast.
It's one of those films that just works and you don't notice in the moment, but then upon reflection you realise how clever it was.
However it does take a suspension of disbelief (like no crap based on the tagline) but as long as you don't dwell too much on the mechanics of things the story telling is beautiful enough to make the 2hrs fly by.
8/10

Good recommendation. I really enjoyed this one. It shows what a writer/director can achieve with imagination and a small budget. The world we were invited into was both familiar and very strange. The performance from Winston Duke was very good especially the end scene. Emma's experience of her nine days made me reflect on life.

7/10

Panic Room (2002)
I hadn't seen this in nearly 15 years. I reckon it's a little underated, very entertaining thriller.
Jodie Foster is awesome in it, which reminds me it might be time for a Silence Of The Lambs rewatch.
Awesome film, loved it when I watched it last year I think (or maybe 2020). Fantastic.

Requiem for a Dream
Re-watched it after a long time when i probably didn't appreciate it as much the 1st time around. Powerful movie and for what it is and conveys its a real masterpiece. You have to be in a certain mood to watch it though, its the complete opposite of a happy feel good movie. Loved every bit of it nevertheless.
Thanks for the reminder from you and other posters. Some reason have never got around to seeing this. Brilliant movie very impactful as good an anti drugs movie I’ve seen. Ellen Burstyn who’s always good …how she didn’t beat out Julia Roberts for best actress that year is a head scratcher.

Lost In Translation (2003, Binge/Foxtel Go) - Lonely people Bill Murray and Scarlett Johansson hang out in Toyko. Oh man this was fantastic. Great chemistry, scenery, jokes, intriguing ending... everything I could want from a relationship film. 9.5/10.

2003 Best Picture rankings (a great year in film, 2003 >> 1994):
Lost In Translation
Master and Commander - 9/10
LOTR: Return of the King - 8/10
Mystic River - 7/10 (enjoyed the book more)
Seabiscuit - 5/10

Great film but I'm not sure, 1994 had some pretty epic films, although Mystic River is a personal favourite, as intense as it is.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

6/10.

Continues the recent run of not so great Marvel films. This one definitely had a few more horror vibes and CGI. I am not really a fan of the Multiverse, it hasn't really been done well so far by Marvel and they're bringing too much into it that it's just a cluster f of the stable.

Ambulance

Jesus Christ what a mess of a film. Like, it’s michael bay so I wasn’t expecting much beyond boom, crash, ‘splosions but three seperate times I had to check I was still watching the same film. Glaring continuity errors, some absolutely appalling dialogue and his new obsession with drone shots dropping from buildings made this a total shit show.

2/10 and 1 is for Eiza Gonzales.

P.s. I’ve gone Secrets of Dumbledore, Spiderhead, Ambulance in the last few weeks and my faith in movies is being seriously tested.
