Continued in Part 7:

There's quite a bit floating around on twitter about how the MCU treats CGI.

They basically use it for everything, and they do it dirt cheap and overwork the artists.

why build sets when you can stick them in digitally for much less money

its a worry on multiple levels because if you're employing less actual physical artists to build sets, do hair and makeup, costumes, finding less physical locations to use, so less staff needed

it all becomes part of cost savings and everything will start being exactly the same

Yeah I've read the stuff around the CGI too, pretty tough read.

Everything should be Thanos quality IMO.

Marvel's CGI can look very cheap (borderline tv series quality CGI.... as bad as Once Upon a Time's cgi back in the day) on occasion. A lot of it stands out too much as being really fake.

New top gun movie - was really good. Alot of throwback to the original (maybe a bit too much at times) but overall very enjoyable.

2 more days and I'll be able to watch it again (legally lol). Will be getting the digital version AND also double dip with the physical 4K when it releases in November. Movie of the year easily!

The Rhythm Section

Blake Lively becomes an assassin, but not in a silly way. In a believable way. Very entertaining with great dialogue. 8/10

I pretty much regard the Marvel movies as being animated movies. There's not really any other way to look at them, given the ratio of CGI to live action - it's not even close. That's not necessarily a bad thing (as long as you're happy to view them as animated movies, obviously). Same goes for DC, too - I'm not sure if there were even any actors actually involved in the big action climax of Justice League or if the whole thing was animated.

Realisitically its more like live action/animation mix. Who Framed Roger Rabbit style.

Just can't be bothered with Marvel stuff.

I sort of want to but it would have to be in the proper sequence then I look at the list and order I'd have to watch them and lose all interest.

1 off now and then I can do I don't need to know how they all link

Bottle Rocket

A mid-90s comedy crime film, written by Owen Wilson and Wes Anderson, directed by the latter.

It was Anderson’s debut as director, as well as the first film to feature Owen Wilson and his brother, Luke. They play (non related) best friend burnouts that sort of aspire to a life of crime without ever really wanting to be bad people.

There’s a sweetness to their friendship, and even though it’s one of those films that just sort of happens, it’s pretty entertaining and funny. It also features their eldest brother in a supporting role.

Definitely worth a watch.

yeah I went and found that after watching Rushmore and The Royal Tenembaums when they first came out, been a long time since I've watched any of those movies.

Might have to start a rewatch run

The Distinguished Citizen (2016, Netflix) -
A fictional drama/dark comedy about a Noble Prize winning writer returning to his home town in Argentina. A thoughtful, interesting story weighed down by the worst directing and cinematography I've seen. Camera is subpar and shakes in every scene and no interesting visuals are captured. That said I must reiterate the plot, themes and characters are worth sticking it out for. 6/10.

Collateral (2004, Netflix) -
Tom Cruise plays an assassin who uses Jamie Foxx's taxi driver character to drive him around. This is awesome and cinematography amazing in comparison to above. Best example is the club scene which was phenomenal. Full of people for once unlike most action scenes that seem to be shot in a parallel ghost town universe. Love evil Tom- wish he did it again as this felt Oscar worthy. 9/10.

It's a good thing Irvin Kirschner made a good star wars sequel - because his robocop sequel killed the franchise in its tracks.

The wall - good army movie with only 3 characters. Kept me pretty interested for the 90m.

Yeah I enjoyed that movie.

Aaron Taylor Johnson is pretty underrated IMO. Even John Cena was cast well for this; tight and intense film.

Films like 2001: A Space Odyssey, Jurassic Park, and Terminator 2 still look better and more realistic than most Disney action films such as Marvel and Star Wars.

With film studios having bigger budgets than ever, it seems pretty unforgivable.

I rewatched Alien recently, and I think much of the model and miniature work on movies such as it, 2001, Blade Runner etc honestly look more realistic than most CGI today.

The Star Wars prequels almost felt like the definition of using it just because it existed in alot of instances. Which is natural given the timeframe was a pretty big leap forward at the time.

The good film makers use it when and where its needed and benefits the story telling and plenty of bad film makers just use it cause they can.

From memory, AoTC has the most egregious use of the 3. But as you say, a product of it's time. Marvel has no excuse, technology or money wise

I remember when the Star Wars prequels were bashed non stop for using too much CGI.

Also, the prequels

Thanks for this recommendation, seems like a little-known gem. Really enjoyed it.

Zoe Kazan (Paul Dano's girlfriend) was a great lead and based on this, can write a screenplay too.
Awesome to hear. Has a cool concept and takes it interesting places.

I also enjoyed Kazan in The Big Sick, another romcom. It's not as good Ruby Sparks though. Her and Paul also wrote Wildlife- I haven't seen it but will check out as I didn't know she wrote Ruby. Thanks for the info.

Watched The Game recently.

I still think Michael Douglas' character did in fact fall to his death
Good spoiler,thought I was having a stroke.

Battleground Melbourne (2022 doco)
Major hit-piece on Dan Andrews covering his handling of covid.
Featuring the usual freedom crew.
Put out by a failed Liberal Democrat whose party got disbanded in July.
Fascinating nonetheless.
4 Stars

Wildlife was a decent film. Dano also directed it.

It’s pretty grim, but the cinematography is beautiful, Carrie Mulligan nails it, and Jake G puts in his standard reliable performance.

I remember quite liking The Big Sick, might give it another watch soon while I'm on a Kazan run (and she's quite cute tbh).

Kong's review of Wildlife basically sums up my thoughts. It's not as much fun as Ruby (it's very much a drama and not a whimsical rom-com), but it shows she has more strings to her bow.

Jurassic Park Dominion
Hated it, outside the parts of the older characters, which I probably only like due to nostalgia. Children in films are annoying and I try not to watch movies with kids as main characters, this one doubly so, the other two mains have no chemistry and the characters are completely unlikeable. Don't even want to think about the dinosaurs and their motivations... Did think Mamoudou Athie was good.

The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent.
Like it, it's fun & goofy in parts, Cage is having fun and I liked a lot of his older movies so that nostalgia was good. I like the meta stuff but I understand some people would hate that. Pascal is always entertaining too, can't think of a poor performance by him off the top of my head.
