I was already in for My Old Ass, but the Palm Springs comparison seals it. Such a banger.

If you liked Palm Springs you should watch The Map of Tiny Perfect Things if you haven't already. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is probably the best of the quirky romantic comedies with a sci-fi twist.

My Old Ass is enjoyable but isn't on the level of those movies. There are some good scenes then some meh. The time travel element isn't explained at all which is pretty much the basis of the whole plot. If you are in it for Aubrey Plaza, you don't see her that much. Coming-of-age is a popular theme. In this movie they had a bob each way between Gen Z views and conservative family values. It sort of worked.

So after finally finishing Murtagh (the book) I decided to re watch Eragon. I remember thinking it was terrible but I was only 13/14 when it came out so I gave it another go.

It's a genuine horror show but I found myself laughing at how bad it was rather than groaning at it. 1/10 proper movie wise but 7/10 for hilarity. Would recommend if you like laughing at shocking movies.

You have great movie taste, though, love those first three movies you mentioned to bits. When people ask what's my favourite movie, ESotSM is my answer.

I agree it’s not on the level of Palm Springs or Eternal Sunshine. But I’m not holding the lack of time travel explanation against it. Groundhog Day doesn’t explain its conceit and it’s possibly the greatest example of the genre. Sometimes over explaining inherently silly concepts can kill a movie’s vibe.

I quite liked Map of Tiny Perfect Things but i think My Old Ass is much much better overall.

I personally think My Old Ass is as good as Palm Springs but it is SUBSTANTIALLY different. Eternal Sunshine is a different beast again and just on another level to all of them.

Goddamn this movie is good. Aspects are cheesy and i forgot how messy most of the battle scenes get (which is not a criticism, it actually works really well that its not stylized).

LEE - mentioned the missus we should go to the movies last Saturday night, thinking Gladiator 2 had already launched. Ended up seeing LEE. Lee Miller (Kate Winslet) goes from a career as a model to enlisting as a photographer to chronicle the events of World War II for Vogue magazine as told to an interviewer in 1977.

Much better than I thought it was going to be, Kate gets her tatas out several times, not sure if they are GCI, or a stunt double but they still hold up.

But it reminded me of this guy claiming that we are probably all living in a simulation. And if you had the power to create and run a simulation wouldn't you want to run it multiple times with slightly different scenarios?

Without spoiling I’m not sure it actually is what you say (but note that’s also how she comes back at the end). I also just don’t think it matters in the slightest that it’s not explained. In the context of the story and the themes it wouldn’t have made any difference in there was some plot contrivance or whatever to explain the mechanics of the time travel.

Love Aubrey Plaza but I really didn't see any entertainment value or narrative story telling from this, unless from a bio-pic about her own sexuality

I know Aubs is a recently open and proud bi sexual person but this project does seem to perhaps try cash in on the LGBT/Queer movie/cinematic gravy train of late (and I say that as a proud ally of the Gay/Trans community)

Lone Star (1996) - written and directed by John Sayles.

Classy modern western that slipped by me. Great cast led by Chris Cooper, Kris Kristopherson, Matthew McConaughey (albeit minimal screen time) and a bunch of others, including an outrageous cameo from Frances McDormand.

Thematically very rich - it is just as interested in the relationships between the characters as it is in the boarder-crossing politics and colonisation history of the area. Despite so much happening below the surface, it remains a coherent telling of the mystery of a missing sheriff from 30 years prior. A clear headed and sophisticated piece of writing and direction to tie it all together. 8.5/10

Good tip. I really liked the story - it had a bit of everything. A murder mystery, a romance, race relations, border crossing issues, the army, parent children relations, the relationship between slavery and the Indians. But it was all expertly woven together. I would have liked to see more of McConaughey's character.

One thing I wondered about the ending

Did the sheriff and his sweetheart from years gone by work out they were half brother and sister? They didn't seem bothered about it even though they had had sex.

Mmm couldn't disagree more on the inclusion of sexuality in the movie. I really enjoyed seeing an accurate bisexual awakening that wasn't played for controversy or lols, it just was.

Completely agree here. The whole thing felt very organic and grounded. Also really not sure about an lgbtiq+ “gravy train”. Queer cinema had existed for as long as cinema, I’m not sure it’s getting any more exposure now but if it is that can only be a good thing.

For some reason my stupid brain thought Audrey's character was her inner lesbian sexuality preventing her from exploring males. Was very happy that wasn't the case and we got a wholesome ending out of it which I must admit ALMOST made me tear up.

I've watched Primer and Tenet twice and I still find them both very confusing. There's complex issues to be grasped but in a movie you have to take your audience with you.

Edge of Tomorrow is lots of fun. They go with a basic time loop that you can get your head around. Then it relies on character and action.

Pretty much my opinions too.

People hold up Primer as one of the best examples of a consistent time loop movie (and on a low budget, too), but I find it confusing as f*** which ruins any enjoyment of it.

Tenet is just not that good - shame, because there is plenty Nolan could have explored with it. The backwards sequences are cool I guess.

And yes, Edge of Tomorrow is my favourite harder sci-fi time loop movie. I went in not knowing the concept of the movie, loved it straight away as soon as I realised it was a time loop movie.

I was recommended Predestination by a friend and found it alright. Did not see the twist coming though, that's for sure, so credit for that.
