Lord of the rings. The War for Rohirrim.
6/10

Nice attempt but falls short of greatness.

There was a really obvious strong female character that they decided not to kill off early that I think hurt the narrative. The film seems a little like a rebuttal to the bechdal test failures of the original trilogy. The head villain is quite weak, which is an intentional choice but not one I would have made and I think it hurts the film as a whole.

Trading Places - 1983

This one is pops up every year as part of a Christmas advent calendar movie marathon sitch we have going.

Although technically not a “Christmas movie”, I still love rewatching it at this time of year Billy ray

Also watched Violent Night recently.

MA15+ so not suitable for the young-uns, but a bit of Christmas fun nonetheless.

Heretic (2024)

A psychological horror where two naive young women are deceived and manipulated by an old man after knocking on his door.

I was very disappointed after the good reviews I read. It tries to be profound with some theological debate but ultimately it hasn't got anything to say about religion or the human condition. It wasn't clear whether it was critiquing misogyny or exploiting it.

The performance of the three leads was good but I didn't care about any of the characters. It's all shot very dark and the horror moments are over-cut so it's hard to tell what's going on.

Tag

Bunch of guys who have had a game of tag running for 30 years since they were kids, a few get together to try and tag the one guy who has never been tagged. Loosely based on a true story.

Dumb but entertaining comedy. Pretty solid overall. Funny, doesn't overstay its welcome or drag the idea out too much. Not a classic, but good enough way to spend 90 minutes.

Watched that on a flight back from England, thought it was the perfect flight movie for the reasons you've stated above.

Big Hero 6

Watched a few very good kids movies recently.

This was not one one of them, though it certainly wasn't bad. It was just, good. The standard has been set pretty high by the Inside Outs and Moana. I'll probably end up seeing it another half a dozen times knowing my kids, so it might grow on me more.

I've never seen any of the Alien films, so thought I'd start off my journey with Prometheus (2012). Spectacular cinematography but the story was disjointed. Apparently there's a heap of scenes that would have made the entire film a lot more coherent had they not been cut to reduce the running time. I enjoy Patrick Wilson as an actor, but unfortunately, his role was miniscule. The Engineers reminded me of Gary Ablett Jr. - bald, ripped and strong.

Interstellar (2014) - IMAX 1570

Love this movie and it was great to see it in this format for its 10th anniversary. Apparently only 20 or so places in the world still do it. Some of the vast scenes (the wave, cornfields, space in general) looked so good.

The world is rapidly becoming uninhabitable and the heros need to save humanity. Pretty big stakes.

I love how this movie combines science fiction, metaphysics, and the emotional irrationality and frailty of the human condition. It also explores the concept of faith and other worlds, it almost has a religious angle without being, well, religious. This is big-picture stuff we are dealing with here, folks.

Zimmer's score really adds an emotional gravitas and the acting is good if not extraordinary. If you have not seen it because you are not a sci fi fan, I think it's worth a shot, it takes a very human perspective on the genre.

Crazy that it's 10 years old already.

I feel like I've seen Interstellar but barely remember it. Going to add to my rewatch list over Xmas hols, thanks kickazz. Think I'll also watch Gravity again. That took my breath away the first time I saw it.

Moana 2

The first if one of my favorite animated movies but this one didn't hit the mark for me. The songs aren't as good and the first and the main villain isn't really featured much. Humor focuses mainly on Heihei (the chicken). A couple of the subplots went nowhere. 5/10 just because the kids still enjoyed it.

3000 Miles to Graceland

The Costner list continues.

This one was odd. Has all the makings of what should've been a good flick but it just wasn't. The cast is really good (**** Courtney Cox was smoking hot) but it just didn't work. Which is a shame really.

I think I like 3000 Miles to Graceland more than most. Maybe like the guilty pleasure of eating junk food.

The screen absolutely loves Kurt Russell, Kevin Costner and Courtney Cox. You could watch them reading the phone book to each other. But throw in some classic Americana, the Nevada landscape, a heist at an Elvis convention and you have some movie gold. Russell is so good he could be a son of Elvis. Costner makes a convincing villain. It gets a bit cheesy but if you are going make a Vegas movie then it should be OTT. Shoot-outs interspersed with dancing girls and an old lady on a slot machine. And that's just the first half hour.

Longlegs

A lot of wildly mixed reviews for this. Some lauding it as a modern day silence of the lambs some saying it’s massively overrated.

I thoroughly enjoyed it. Maika Monroe is wonderfully understated and softly spoken as the Junior FBI agent and Nic Cage steals the show as the absolutely unhinged longlegs. I can see the silence of the lambs comparisons (junior female fbi agent, time and setting etc) and whilst it never reaches those heights it’s a very good serial killer procedural with a twist and good performances. Alicia Witt should get a shout out too cause she’s great all the time and particularly in this.

WICKED

Seen it twice now as the first time up front I missed all the peripherals.

I'm not big on musicals or Ariana Grande but this was ****** brilliantly entertaining and Cynthia Envo is amazing.

The 160 minutes didn't drag on - amazing sets and scenery with lots of links to to the original Wizard of Oz from 1939.

10/10 as a musical film.

Do yourself a favour and check it out (thanks Molly Meldrum)

Yeah look, I mostly agree with what you're saying there. For some reason I can't really put my finger on, it just didn't work for me as well as it should.

I can't believe I'd never even heard of it before starting this Costner watch.

Spending the day rotting in bed so I decided to watch A Knight's Tale, which had recently been recommended to me.

So annoyed at myself for not watching it before! Heath Ledger is so bloody charismatic. At first I was a bit shocked by the costuming and hair but quickly realised that it wasn't meant to be period accurate at all. The soundtrack ****ing slaps and Rufus Sewel's eyes are mega dreamy.

I ****ing love a Knights Tale. It’s very cliched and predictable but by golly it’s a stack of fun.

Only thing I don't like about it is the at the end it's revealed Ledger is some sort of noble descendant so he's all good to keep jousting? Doesn't that go against everything?
