A Real Pain - Jesse Eisenberg's directorial debut, starring him and Rory Culkin as a pair of cousins travelling to Poland shortly after the grandmother's death, to retrace her life there before the Holocaust and her move to the United States immediately afterwards. They join a guided tour of other Jews (one of whom is played by Jennifer Grey, who it was great to see in a movie again) but they grate on one another, with Eisenberg's neurosis and Culkin's directionlessness and mental illness. There's been a lot of love for this movie and I was disappointed I couldn't join it, as it left me feeling like the obnoxiousness of what people hate about American tourists was celebrated. The supporting characters felt like they existed purely to react to the two leads. This includes the one Pole they finally talk to, about ten minutes before the movie ends. I don't know, I seem to be the minority here so don't let this put you off, but it didn't work for me at all.

Wicked - I had no relationship with the stage musical aside hearing Defying Gravity a handful of times. On it as the core text, I don't think it adds anything to The Wizard of Oz at all. Glinda the Good Witch, the Wicked Witch of the West and Scarecrow had a love triangle? Really?? This is only the first half of a movie so maybe I'll feel differently after I see Part Two. But on that, this is way too long and does really drag. Songs are okay, I suppose, but nothing special. The set design is stunning and the real standout of the film, but the cinematography unfortunately saps a lot of the vibrancy, with this shocking backlighting for all the interior scenes. I can't believe this will be over five hours long when all done.

Been sick with man flu and home for the last 4 days and needed to get out the house so decided to book a ticket to see Nosferatu.

Had no idea what the **** I was watching but it was good.

Took me a while to realise it was a movie about vampires.

Now time to check out more Eggers. This was my first exposure of his.

Good movie.

Fly Me To The Moon… Channing Tatum and Scarlett Johansson in a rom com set around the launch of Apollo 11 to the moon. It’s pretty to watch and the main actors have some charm and chemistry but there’s barely any com and not even enough rom. And at more than two hours, it’s a glaring example of how light comedies need to be shorter. They needed to shave half an hour off this. Also wildly mis-sold. The big gimmick they advertised doesn’t even come into the film until more than halfway through. And then doesn’t make any sense at all. 4/10

Sounds like The Fall Guy minus the stunts.

The Instigators... Matt Damon and Casey Affleck star in a Boston crime caper (clearly their thing) about two losers who take part in a burglary only to find themselves being pursued by various interests. It tries to make things more interesting by having Damon going to a psychiatrist, who ends up getting more involved in the shenanigans. The cast is pretty stacked (Michael Stuhlbarg, Ving Rhames, Ron Perlman), the acting is good, some of the characters fun, but despite introducing all these plot threads, the script isn't tight enough, they don't come together right and it doesn't make a whole lot of sense. 5/10

Better Man

This is the Robbie Williams autobiography with the monkey playing him. The monkey actually worked well. And it felt like RW was telling his story, up to a point in time anyway (no mention of his current family etc).

Yeah I didn’t mind it, bit like Rocketman but had more heart. Almost lost its way toward the end but final scenes strong. Over 2 hours but never boring, didn’t feel too long.

I liked it. It was a fun and tense action film 90s style.

Yes, it was full of improbabilities and contrivances, but remained fun.

 

[Catfish Alley]

I watched two movies yesterday.

The Devil's Bath. Wow. One of the darker movies I've ever seen. To put it mildly, a woman has some trouble adapting to day-to-day life in 1700s Austria. Was just grim with a few scenes that were very difficult to watch. The acting, directing, and overall movie making was very good but it's a tough watch. 4/10.

Gladiator II. This was a fun watch but you definitely have to suspend belief and you're knowledge of history. Some cool sprawling shots of ancient Rome. I liked Denzel Washington in this and thought the actors playing the unhinged Emperors did a nice job. I might be overrating it because was just in the mood for something like this. Was entertaining enough but I can't see myself watching it again. 6/10.

A Real Pain

I've always liked Jesse Eisenberg - he reminds me of a more serious Michael Cera.

Tightly written and directed little dramedy about two cousins on a holocaust tour in Poland. Felt like a very personal story to Eisenberg - at times cringe-inducing and at times poignant. A brisk 85 minutes til the credits roll 7.5/10

it left me feeling like the obnoxiousness of what people hate about American tourists was celebrated.

Culkin's character (Benji) was insufferable no doubt, but we are seeing the movie through Jesse's POV and he was really struggling with the obnoxiousness of his cousin, which made it more palatable/relatable for me. I don't think Benji was celebrated because it was made clear he was a pretty flawed human.

The one Pole they finally talk to

Again I think this was well done because it was Benji, paradoxically, who addressed the fact they hadn't been engaging with any Polish people on the tour.

Totally understand your response and I was thinking about it while watching it. Basically I thought everyone's flaws and behaviours were sufficiently criticised within the film haha.

Thelma (2024)
A 93-year-old grandmother loses $10k to a scammer and goes on a epic action packed adventure for vengeance.

Really sweet and enjoyable with genuine laughs. It straddles a fine line as it could have easily been exploitative or overly sentimental, but it's just good fun satire and easily my favourite comedy of the year, if not one of my favourite films of the year.

Not a bad little movie. I was sad to see in the credits that Richard Roundtree had died. Here he is as Shaft.

Tetris… surprisingly fun film about attempts to secure the licensing rights to Tetris from a crumbling Soviet Union. It’s obviously highly fictionalised but that allows them to play it almost as a spy thriller. There’s some info dumps but they cleverly use computer graphics to help tell the story and keep you engaged. It’s also an interesting look at the era. 7/10

The movie has a TV miniseries, not as good as the movie but does round out the story.

 

[Catfish Alley]

American Werewolf in London. I'd never seen this John Landis classic and it was a good watch on a rainy night in. Creepy enough with a little humor spread throughout. Only a little over 1.5 hours. The practical effects on the transformation were pretty amazing. Can see why it won an Academy for make-up. 8/10.
