Last year was notorious for movie flops, but has anyone else found no appeal with any mainstream movies released in December 2024 and January 2025? Normally some blockbuster movies are released this time of year, but not this summer and none of the recent films in any genre look interesting or worth seeing. They look like streaming release movies.

Do we really need yet another biopic about Bob Dylan? Another musical biopic about an English singer/musician who for reasons nobody seems able to explain is portrayed by a CGI chimpanzee? A depressing melodrama about a young wife/mother who is dying of cancer but the scenes in the movie are out of sequence? A werewolf movie that looks from trailer alone flat out boring? Or a crime-action film that again looks like a Netflix movie?

At least with most of the movies last year they looked to have some appeal to their audiences before it became apparent they were no good (e.g. Madam Web, Argyle, Borderlands) or were perfectly good movies that simply failed to find an audience (The Fall Guy, Fly Me to the Moon). But this year so far ...
New Dylan movie getting great reviews. Conclave, Nosferatu, Heretic, A Real Pain, Brutalist, Wicked. Seems a good list. Fall Guy? That was rubbish

I saw and liked Heretic, but that was released in November. Conclave seemed to have a 'blink and you'll miss it' release. There's obviously movies out there some people like, but my tastes in movies are pretty varied and I like lots of different genres, so its unusual for me personally not to find any movie with any appeal to released in the past two months, when normally there would be at least one or two.

Animal House - Paramount

Finally became free to watch

Just so many memories of watching this countless times on vhs - pausing at inappropriate scenes , laughing at others and generally thinking how great a movie it was at the time

My American Pie

Its fun to look at actors in their beginnings and marvelling how the casting showcased them.

Its a little dated but already being set in 1962 minimises it

American Star (2024)

A slow paced movie with Ian McShane chilling in the Canary Islands, but you know he's a hitman with a target in a couple of days.

McShane is good but doesn't have much to work with. The scenery of Fuerteventura looks nice. I think the plot is trying to be profound but it doesn't deliver.

5/10

A Complete Unknown

Absolutely loved this. Timothee Chalamet is excellent as Bob Dylan, really nails the look and the speech and the mannerisms, and his performances of the songs were very good.

How much you enjoy it may depend to a significant extent on how much you enjoy Dylan's music and how interested you are in the story around it. If you hate his music you probably won't enjoy a 2.5 hour movie packed full of it.

The Bikeriders 2023 Netflix.

Adaption from a real book by Danny Lyon where an author rode around with a bikie gang in the late 1960s America.

Tom Hardy as the leader is as good as ever and the film follows the wife of a member of the gang and her story telling the author what went on within the gang after he left. Not full on non stop violence and it is more story telling leading up to tragic events but it does have its moments as you could imagine for film of this genre.

Acting is spot on from everyone and most dialogue is directly from the book as well played out in a fantastic film.

Must watch IMO and i am now searching for the book online to read as it heavily picture based as well.

Solid 8/10.
