The Monkey

Horror-comedy based on a Stephen King short story. Pretty stupid and some of the deaths were way over the top but pretty enjoyable nonetheless.

Mickey 17, real shame. Upset me a bit that it's the same guy who made Parasite.

I thought it was okay, but primarily worked thanks to Robert Pattinson, who's tremendous in it. I loved the critters too.

The Trump stuff was a bit much, although it's pretty funny that Bong Joon Ho has said it had nothing to do with him.

Wonder if it's more lucrative for B-tier movies to go direct to streaming or release in cinemas these days.
Definitely less risky to go straight to streaming, studios have to believe something has market viability to put it in cinemas.

I wouldn't call Black Bag a B movie though, it's a respected director, clever screenplay elevated by movie stars and a great supporting cast. It's a shame more people aren't seeing it.

As they discussed on the Big Picture, with the short window from theatrical release to streaming/VOD these days (often around 20 days), there isn't that urgency to go see something at the cinemas anymore.

Mine is more life circumstance (kids) but I rarely go to the movies anymore. Early vod is a godsend

I know a lot do it here but I still cant get to the stage of paying for a movie at home

Yeah yeah back in my day I paid for vhs weeklys but the streaming model leaves me cold

Open up the platform and movies range from $24 down to $5 and I think '' I can wait ''

I have seen valid arguments ie kids , watch when ready , convenience etc

Ultimately I am a cheap bastard and can wait

It bothers me that I pay through the nose for all these subscriptions and then they want MORE money for me to watch particular movies.

I think this is the root cause of my disgruntlement with it

ahoy matey

there are some things i want to watch that are not easily available in local region coding, since i'm happy to pay for physical copies. i still plan to use additional optical drives to watch foreign region codes one day.
i'd be concerned about being able to download the movie, or are you just beholden to the platform for the license to watch that movie (for the life of that platform and however long they decided to retain it on their server etc etc).

Early vod just means early 1080p webDL ;)

I remain skeptical about how much money the filmmakers actually see from vod/streaming services given they don't make figures public (and how little Spotify pays musicians).

Going to cinemas still seems like the best way to support the industry as a whole. Totally get it's tough with kids etc though.

Oh wow I didn't know he's said that. That makes sense because I didn't think the way the character was written had many similarities with Trump. But clearly Ruffalo is doing a Trump impersonation - there's no doubt about it. So knowing that, I think it's average that Ho didn't tell Ruffalo to GTFO with that because for me it just took me out of the movie.

The Green Mile on Foxtel made back in 1999,
Think it's on Ch7 also not to sure.
Tom Hanks is brilliant as usual.
Yeah it was on last week on 7mate I’m kicking myself I meant to record to watch later

This weekend, I watched two new films from octogenarian film makers I didn't particularly like in their primes:

At the End of the Day - through the French Film Festival, the new film by 87 year old Claude Lelouch, who made the 1966 classic A Man and a Woman and, despite being ultra-prolific, little of worth since, especially this century. This was a pretty tedious film, with frequent ugly references to sexual violence and one delightful reference to The Bridges of Madison County that made me wish I was watching Clint Eastwood standing in the rain instead of this slog. Strange flashbacks throughout (to the Nazi occupation, to the May '68 protests) don't really amount to much. The most enjoyable parts were probably the documentary footage captured when they sent the film crew in to real life events such as Paris protests, a race day at Le Mans and the Festival d'Avignon. This actually had an incredibly wild plot when I sat down after the film and mapped it out, so it's wild that it translated into a film so dull.

The Alto Knights - new from Barry Levinson, the 82 year old who made numerous loved-by-some-but-not-for-me films in the 1980s and 1990s (Good Morning Vietnam, Rain Man, Sleepers, Wag the Dog) and then, similar to Lelouch above, nothing of worth this century. Here he teams with Goodfellas and Casino writer Nicholas Pileggi to tell the story of rival 1950s Mafia bosses Frank Costello and Vito Genovese, both played by Robert De Niro in a puzzling creative choice. Those who felt let down by The Irishman de-aging will need to reassess after seeing ancient De Niro play as young as 30-something with only really hair dye hiding his true age. There are points where you hear Pileggi's dialogue, some of the moments of banter, but in Levinson's hands it just falls flat and only made you wish Scorsese was telling this story too. Mob movies should be more exciting than this.

How does it work out cheaper? I still have to pay my monthly subscription fees to access content on netflix, disney, stan etc through the firestick don't I?
Basically has 20,000 + movies, all the stuff that's on the subs. The one I am looking at is $215 a year.
