It depends on whether you were in custody our not before the hearing.
If you weren't in custody (no bail etc) then usually you don't go straight to gaol, you get a few days to organise your affairs before you go in. The same would go for Marley, even if he is given a custodial sentence today he won't go in tomorrow, he would be given a "report date" where he has to turn up at a police station or the prison itself.

Sounds like you have had some prior experience in the courts
well if you want a thorough understanding of court procedure, from the defence side of things, the pies board is the place to go
