Where are they now (delistings / retirements since 2005)

Being that we don’t have the list spots available - no. Being that Howe was prime whipping boy at the Shinbeggars and TOB is now playing in the EFNL - no. Being that basing your recruitment solely on future father/sons is utterly demented - no.

Yeah, but if there was 95-gamer getting more action than Wilt Chamberlin then maybe it’s worth considering. He could field two complete sides himself.

3 blasts from the past, Jordan Kelly, Tom Schneider and Shem Tatupu

Jordan Kelly, Chelsea

The former Hawthorn and the Western Bulldogs AFL listed player most recently has been playing his footy with Old Xaverians and will boost the Gulls backline in 2024.

Tom Schneider, Pearcedale

The 31-year-old is a former Hawthorn draftee and best and fairest winner at Box Hill Hawks as well as a three-time B&F winner at Eastern Football League powerhouse Vermont, where he played starring roles in two premierships.

Shem Tatupu, Port Melbourne Colts

Tatupu moves the Colts from a finals side to a serious contender. If he gives midfielders Billie Smedts and Justin Taylor the use he provided his St Kilda City teammates last year, the Colts will be tough to beat, especially at home.

I love that Shem is still playing footy. I think he's be one of the first international recruits that failed to play a senior game but stayed in Melbourne and kept playing the game. Must've really fallen in love with the game to not just go back to rugby or go home to NZ. (I know he had a stink at Melbourne Storm)

I've always wondered why North haven't been trying to track down all of Carey's kids.
Andrew Rule and former Reserves player Tony Wilson (son of Ray Wilson) tell a good story about Fred Cook who was watching his son play U19's down at Rosebud. During the game he spotted a barmaid who he knew from years earlier, so he went over for a chat. While they were watching the game he remarked on a player, playing in the centre, saying "that kid's a really good player". The barmaid replied "well he should be, he's yours". Fred found out the young lad was his 11th child.

Dan Howe headed to the Ovens and Murray with the Yarrawonga Pigeons

Yarrawonga’s back-to-back premiership chances in the Ovens and Murray league have received a boost with former Hawthorn and North Melbourne midfielder Dan Howe returning home.

Howe has signed for the Pigeons for the 2024 season after his 107-game AFL career ended last year after being delisted by the Kangaroos.

He joined the Kangaroos after playing 96 games for Hawthorn from 2015 to 2022.

Yarrawonga believes he will be a major asset on and off the field.

Howe was born and raised in Yarrawonga but played his football for Rennie in the Picola league.

“The quality of football he’s capable of playing is a plus but it’s also the quality of kid he is,” Yarrawonga football manager Leigh Ramsdale said.

“He’s a great bloke from a great family, it’s good to see the two brothers playing football together.”

Howe will join his brother Lachie, who played in last year’s premiership win in the ruck, at the club.

The signing is part of the club’s mantra of getting their players born and raised in the town to come home.

“We’ve always got an eye on our local players who are playing, whether they are on an AFL list, a VFL list or playing suburban footy, to get them back in time,” Ramsdale said.

“When he was delisted, it was a shame, he had a great career.

“It worked out in the end for us to get him to the club and we’re stoked.”

And in a boost to the team he’ll be here for the whole season.

“He’s a footballer at heart,” Ramsdale said.

“We just hopes he comes back here, haves a good dig and enjoys the game for what it is.”

Howe adds to a team who has retained all but one of the 22 who played in last year’s Ovens and Murray grand final.

It’s a strong sign of stability with the team also keeping former Geelong and GWS great Steven Johnson as coach.

Ramsdale said the team was pretty much set for 2024 but the Pigeons could add one or two more players who are training with the club in the next few weeks.

Football can be a very cruel game at times. We can be quick to jump on blokes but we need to be more understanding at times of what they actually go through.
It's a very cruel game ALL of the time, and certainly at the elite level. The lack of empathy by so called "supporters" really grinds my gears.

Huge for Yarra. Good luck stopping them.

Former Blue and Demon Jeff Garlett missing a set shot from 40 out during the Grand Final is the main reason why Yarrawonga are reigning premiers. Otherwise it would have been another Albury Tigers flag.

New Geelong draftee Connor O'Sullivan also played in this game.

Can see Howe absolutely dominating at that level

A lot of former AFL players struggle with the O&M standard because it's generally better than they are anticipating. Few come in and really dominate like you'd expect.

Former Magpie Tim Broomhead is currently player/coach at my former club North Albury. He's a great example of a player coming from the top level with the right attitude and improving the players around him. Took the Hooper's from multi-year wooden spooners to just missing finals about 2 years ahead of schedule.

10 years ago Jason Gram came straight from St.Kilda into the Ovens and Murray and probably expected to be able to cruise. Come seasons ends he was injured and it made absolutely no difference to the make up of the side. Was tagged out of most games and never had a genuine, dominant performance like you might expect.

I reckon Dan will have the right attitude and do really well at the Pigeons. Was too strong for VFL level.

Not sure if Billy Hartung is playing but he is working as 2IC under my father in law at a construction company. Learning the ropes

Box Hill premiership captain and Hawthorn 11-game player Dave Mirra looks like he's taken the boots off for the final time, transitioning into coaching at the Collegians school team

Upon reflection, how wonderful was the day when we fielded Mirra, Glass, and O'Brien in the same team?

I officially would like to see Howe and TOB picked up mid season please…
