My bet is someone made some.BBC jokes in the locker rooms. If I was him I'd take it as a compliment but hey he's gotta fund his shitty NFL career somehow.

I know his brother and he's not even remotely as sooky as Joel. Best salesman I've ever seen actually when I was in that space.

I would suggest that because of his heritage that when it was discovered that his BBC was in fact an LBC that this might have been the basis of his "harassment"

Also, I love baseless internet speculation.

Regardless he has pulled the ultimate leverage lever and that is the HRC against the AFL, its exactly what he says it's not about and that's a payout

He will also end up being an ambassador for racism working for the AFL on a salary you watch

If you listen to his lawyer closely talk about not being silenced and not agreeing to hush money the lawyer says there is now a small window for the AFL to work it out with Joel before he proceeds, well of course that means a deal and that involves money and probably employment

This is full of shit. He never loved the game as an infant. He was born in Sydney, excelled at athletics and made the switch to footy as a teenager AFAIK.

Love the Shine Lawyers sponsors board in the background. Nice touch.

Obviously can't comment on the merits of his case but IMO he certainly was given every chance to succeed as a footballer by the Club and McKenna to the point of exasperation by supporters who saw him as a talent free zone given games at the expense of better players.
Fair call I'd say.

Pure speculation of course but you wonder if the fact he was getting games ahead of good footballers like Warnock, may have led to some locker room "banter". There was a lot of rumour running around at the time about player resentment at the selection policies in play at that time.
The abuse got to a very serious stage where the family felt they had to move away to Melbourne - don't think many of us have had to face that. One thing leads to another, and another, and another and becomes overwhelming. Wonder how much of the 'colleagues' antics are going to be brought up? A couple might be a bit embarrassed if so.

He has the opportunity to test his claims in Court now-I hope he's okay
Same - he was a good kid - not sure how he's coping as a young man.

Joel Wilkinson was a Multicultural Ambassador for the AFL, while playing for the Suns.

Justin Sherman was suspended for 4 matches for racially vilifying him in his 1st AFL match.

The Suns lodged an official complaint after a Collingwood supporter yelled something similar at him during another match. Collingwood's Daisy Thomas & several Collingwood supporters stood up for him. Collingwood cancelled the membership of the fan who had abused him.

I watched every one of Joel's games for the Suns. He was a very good athlete, but showed no real aptitude for AFL footy. He played far more games than his skills & form warranted. Being delisted was only a matter of time, based on that poor form.

I'm not privy to what happened in the locker rooms, but the club seemed proud of having such diversity in the heritage of players on its list.

It seems to me Joel was given a lot of support from both the Suns & the AFL community.

I don't wish any ill on him, but if there is any validity to his case, it is being undermined by the more fanciful claims his lawyer has made.

The lawyer saying that he was 'trajecting up' based on the games he played is just incorrect. If anything he got worse over time and was forced to play due to our dire injury list.
Yeah Malcolm blight was on whateley on sen this morning and gave Joel a nice clip about that.
He said if Joel think he was sacked because he spoke out how did the likes of Winmar and Goodes manage to play 300+ game

Looking back at some of the flogs that we had hanging around the club back then, it wouldn’t really surprise me if some jokes were taken to far regarding Joel or if he felt like he was being attacked and couldn’t deal with it. And obviously their are clear cases of him suffering abuse from fans and players.

In saying that though, I lose sympathy anytime claims like these arise where either the individual is so far out of reality that he actually believes his future earnings were damaged by these events, and not simply by the fact that he wasn’t very good,or just uses allegations like these as an easy payout due to the touchiness of the subject, backing the AFL into a corner to pay-up or risk being labelled misogynistc/racist/sexist/whatever.

If he had of just gone with the angle of trauma/effects these events have had on him then I would have supported him. However pulling out the 'future-earnings' 'I was on track to be a star' BS when it is so painfully clear how wrong that is (which any lawyer should surely be able to deny in seconds) is where I question his motives.

AFAIK his mum’s an Aussie, so there’s a 50% chance it could’ve swung either way?

Or not at all based on the laws of pendulum motion

In other news, this is the 10th anniversary of the 2008 Victoria vs the Dream Team. Somewhat ironically, the Suns had 3 representatives in that match, Nathan Bock, Campbell Brown and Josh Fraser, whereas the fantasy teams compiled by afl.com don’t have a single Sun in either team. We didn’t even have a team then and managed 3 guernseys yet the boffins contributing to this fluff piece couldn’t find a current Sun.

Lynch and Witts were mentioned as unlucky, but I think Jack Martin was stiffed. Thoughts?
