I saw more of Hird and Voss play. My order would be;

Hird, he seemed to turn a few more games for mine, I perceived him as a little more polished and skilful.

Voss and Ricciuto, sit level with me and Buckley only slightly behind mostly because of injury for me, the others seemed to sustain their best for longer.

The very best of Hird & Voss was slightly better than that of Buckley & Riccuito IMO; it seemed like they could will their teams to victory themselves at times. They were both cruelled by injury though, so Buckley & Riccuito played at a very high level for longer (though didn't hit as high a peak).

I would go Hird JUST over Voss, then Riccuito then Buckley.

Imagine how many weeks Riccuito would get for the hit on Kemp these days. A Gazillion?
What year was the Kemp hit? Could argue the best bumps of the 90s and 00s were both against eagles players as the other classic for me is Earl Spalding's at Subi in 1995.

I think Voss' reputation gets elevated because of the premierships.

and rightfully so. after all, that is why every player plays the game. Voss led his team to 3 back to back to back flags through sheer force of will. he demanded that his team-mates run through a brick wall because that's exactly what he was willing to do, every week. he was the most intimidating player going around - he had the X factor. that's why I rate Hird & Voss above Buckley & Ricciuto.

Buckley > Voss > Hird > Riccuito

Roo I have on that half a rung below the top 3 alongside Black, Judd, Goodes, Harvey, Crawford, West, Cousins

A pretty fair assessment and very similar to my thoughts, although I think of Hird more as courageous than tough. He couldn't deal out punishment like Ricciuto. Ricciuto would punish the body of the opponent and come out with the ball. Hird would come out with the ball by putting his body on the line. A fine distinction I know, but they were very different players.

I find these things difficult to compare as all 4 had qualities that any club would want.
Put it well, I think.

Hird was as brave as they come, never shirked anything - but Roo thrived on it; he wanted the physicality of the contest. If you had Hird and Roo running at you, Roo is the one you'd fear the most.

His suspension and then ****ing parvo arguably cost us a flag in 05/06.

TBH I think Voss as a player is a tad overrated. Buckley, although doesn't have the premiership medallions is a far better player, as was Ricciuto.

Hird>Buckley>Riccuto>Voss

It's not an argument, just an observation. Of course they were all tough, but in my view Roo was a true hardnut.

I'd imagine if you had your head over the footy or were dropping into a hole, the last one of those 4 you'd want to run into would have been Ricciuto. I reckon more people talk short steps around Roo than the other 3.

As far as ratings go, seems you have them pretty much the same as me.

I was told basically exactly this by a bloke who was on Collingwood's list for a number of years. Shortly after arriving at the club, Buckley told him if there is one player in the league you should try and avoid being tackled or hit by, it's Mark Ricciuto.

Sorry but no. I don't think you can overrate Voss in his prime, as a player, and then he brought more as a captain. His coaching is diminishing his stature, which is sad.

Not this shyt again.
Nothing changed.
As pure footballers...
1. Hird
2. Harvey
3. Buckley
4. Ricciuto
5. Voss

Not interested in team spirit, club size, flags won, vic bias etc...thats all crap. List is just what i saw as footballers.

Despite the two Brownlow's, I don't rate Harvey up there with the other four. Great footballer, tireless worker and a ball magnet no doubt, I just don't think he was as damaging with the ball as the others were.

Tend to agree, no doubt a champion of our club and the game but Harvey didn't dominate matches as often as Riccuito or Hird (he had a few blinders to be sure, but I remember Roo "resting" forward and kicking bags)

I almost place Hird in a different category to the other three as well, saw him more as a half forward than a midfielder

I rate Riccuito almost higher than the other three, reckon he was shielded from the Melbourne media being an Adelaide player

If he played for a successful Victorian club over his career, I reckon he would be well considered at least equal to Buckley

As a genuine footballer I see Hird as the best player of this group
Then Riccuito / Buckley / Voss

Great player, a fair way off Hird, little way off Buckley, pretty close to Voss.

1. Hird
2. Buckley
3. Voss
4. Ricciuto

Nicely put. This is pretty much my opinion as well. Not as good as Hird or Bucks. Perhaps a tad behind between Voss and Harvey. Aside from Hird though, I reckon he's the most versatile out of that group. All champions of the game, all with a shit load of accolades.
