Instagram followers is an interesting measure and Richmond's numbers certainly exploded after winning the 2017 flag and subsequent period of success. I'm not sure if it is an accurate measure of number of fans or more an indication of fan engagement (though a likely indicator of support in a 16-25 demographic).
Take Carlton and Essendon's Insta followers for instance. Carlton has 212k compared to Essendon at 210k - However, Carlton have posted 7,159 times compared to 3,966 for Essendon. That may indicate that Carlton is better at engaging with their fans via social media compared to Essendon and does not necessarily have more supporters.
For comparison Collingwood has posted 5,570 times (261k); Richmond 4,033 (275k) and WCE 5,971 (218k).
Facebook fans differ in order:
1. Collingwood 363k
2. Essendon 336k
3. Hawthorn 329k
4. West Coast 320k
5. Richmond 288k
6. Adelaide 282k
7. Carlton 276k
Collingwood and Hawthorn are quite high in Facebook fans as a likely result of their success during the peak of Facebook's popularity (2008-2015). It thus makes sense that Richmond's Instagram followers are higher given that is now the dominant social media platform - although Collingwood performs relatively well in that regard.
Essendon is the interesting one with such a disparity between Facebook and Instagram followers - this may indicate they have lost support or lack support amongst the 16-25 demographic. Or, it can also indicate that Essendon has the greatest potential for growth should they achieve on field success.
I'd say that SuperCoach numbers are one of the most accurate ways of assessing raw support across the league, as someone else indicated in this thread.
Overall, I'd say is clear that Collingwood will always remain the biggest team nation wide. Richmond are at their zenith and may be considered bigger at the moment. West Coast are the most well resourced team in the league and clearly the most dominant within a single state. Essendon have large support and probably the potential to be the biggest outside those three.
