How much would you love to sit and watch Gary Ayres run around and just hit the contest and his opponent HARD every time. What I would give for someone like him in our current side.

Bugger footspeed etc just some real hardness from a genuine big body contest after contest would be nice. That is leadership. Not saying our blokes dont have a crack but there is no-one of any decent size to inflict fear and pain into the opposition in a physical sense. We need another genuine hard nut/hitman. Perhaps the Boxer can play a role next year...

For me it's Langford, that guy was the original attacking offensive fullback.
Given the current game styles being played he would be invaluable. Think Scarlett....but better, and capable of taking any forward.

Langford - Quality individual and player, he was very athletic and had the size to play on todays monsters. Remember he played on Salmon, Lockett, Ablett, Kernahan, Sumich, Modra - a great bunch of fwds - all with different attributes.

Mathews was nearly there, imagine a fit Hodge, Mathews, Mitchell, Sewell, Lewis all as hard nuts going through the midfield - Mathews was such a player he would of changed his game to not be reported (or not to often), plus he would scare the crap out of opposition mids and backs (when resting fwd - 915 odd goals), they would always want to know exactly where he was positioned.

Probably Langers. I remember towards the end of his career it just seemed like when he played, we won. He didn't play, we usually lost. He'd be huge for the current side.

Hands down Peter Knights. Versatile player play CHB or CHF great contested mark at either end of the ground. Legend IF ONLY

Fair call Four Pillars. Peter Knights is the reason I live for Hawthorn. My Dad was a Melbourne supporter but for some reason as a kid watching Knightsy taking screamers with that shock of blonde hair just got me. Barracked for Hawthorn ever since.

The only reason I took Chrissy Mew over Knightsy is that I thought he was much taller - but after looking I've just seen they're about the same height. Mew 189cm and Knights 188cm.

So I change my submission to Peter Knights - hands down!

Dunstall.... we could then move Roughy to CHB where he would be an All Aust!!!
Seriously while we just missed this year with bad conversion, we are very susceptible to the long ball into our back 50.
As the competition improves our undersized backline will not stand up to a fit eagles squad and it cant currently handle the Cats forward line!!

Mathews, Hudson, Brereton, Dunstall, Langford, Ayres, Dipper, Mew, Jarman, Platten, Knights, Tuck, Moore, ... far too many to chose from.

Either a forward who could slot a goal, Huddo the all time best or Dunstall for the youngsters

or

a defender to shore up defence Langford, Mew, Knights or Moore.

See 1:08 for the player that I would have in the side....

Great laughs in there - imagine the Essendon team room afterwards where about 50% of their side had to admit being roughed up by a midget with dreadlocks. Another Changa highlight reel.

Aside from the obvious (Langford) how about someone like Platten or Crawford? Right now we're lacking quality midfielders who can pinpoint it to Buddy lace out. Mitchell, Hodge, Burgoyne & Birchall are the only ones I can think of who are capable of doing it, but none of them do it often enough. (exactly why a fit Hodge playing midfield would be a MASSIVE boost for us)

Otherwise I'd take Brereton for his leadership, physicality and sheer freakish ability to play the game. Our 80s & 90s teams walked taller whenever he was on the field.

Oh and if we included players from other clubs in this then someone like James Hird would make a wonderful mentor for Gunston and example for the rest of the team to follow.
