Ok here's a what if exercise to take posters' minds off the GF (somewhat) and trading/drafting.

After some thought I would probably go with Peter Knights. He'd improve our contested marking and slot in quite nicely at centre half back. I'd love to see some of the forwards of today compete with a defender who would go for his marks in a contested situation. Plus he'd have the added bonus of being able to go forward and stand on blokes heads if any team tried that flooding crap in our forward 50.

Honourable mentions go to:

Darren Jarman. Would there be a better sight in footy than Jars streaming (ok maybe trickling would be a better description, he never was the quickest going around) out of half back and hitting Buddy on the chest with a 55 metre bullet. Could also go forward and kick goals in finals.

Michael Byrne. Very good tap ruckman who could also play forward.

I'm trying to think of players whose game could fit in with the footy played these days as well as improve our current side, not just name our all time greatest player, when we'd get a reasonable consensus on that fairly quickly

Jason Dunstall.... We would have won if it were him kicking for goal on Saturday :(

Seems like a silly question, but is there an accurate figure of how many behinds Dunstall kicked in his career ? The number of behinds I can remember marking down in the footy record for him, especially out at Waverley, seems to not measure up with the current consensus of him being a dead eye dick ?

Lots of great options. Langford would be fantastic for the big forwards. But I can't go past one of the greatest of all time - Lethal Leigh Matthews. Would walk into any side in any era.

From my lifetime only, Langford or Salmon.

At a pinch, I'd go Salmon because I think he'd handle modern footy with aplomb, if not even better than during his day.

Any generation, Hudson. Then Lethal. Maybe Edwards would go alright too.

Not 100% sure about stats, but he hardly seemed to miss throughout my childhood in the 90's, brilliant kick for goal

Goals 1254 Behinds 641 (from stats.rleague.com)

I'll go with Croady and if we can extend the exercise to which player I'd like from a current opposition team I'd go with Patty Dangerfield.

Close your eyes and imagine both of those in the current Hawks side!

If people are going to include JK3 as a past player with his 13 games than I'll say Ablett Snr who played six in the brown and gold. With him, Buddy and Cyril in the forward half would we be the greatest team in the history of the game?

Lethal.
A hard as nails midfielder with exquisite skills who kicked goals either when he was on the ball or 'resting' up forward. Throw in his leadership and warrior mentality and hes exactly what we need. You can have whatever key backs you like, but I know if Lethal was playing the ball wouldn't have entered the Swans forward line nearly as much or as easily as it did last weekend. The best player I've ever seen.

Only problem is he wouldn't play too many consecutive games in this era...

Langford as we lack a key defender. Or Darren Jarman.

Never got to see Matthews, and I wonder how he would go in todays footy. Probably would have been suspended by the time the GF came around.

Also, purely as he was one of my favs as a kid, but Darrin Pritchard streaming down the wing would be a better option than Smith or young
