Another option is 19yo -

Joe Pike (Barwon Heads) After missing out on being drafted last year, the 203cm ruckman returned with the Falcons and dominated. He scored 100 SuperCoach points in all but one game – a score of 94 – for the Falcons and also caught the eye for Geelong's VFL side.

If Marshall and Heath are both injured we are playing Cordy or Hammer/ Sharman at the moment. This guy is just purely a third rung ruck. Doesn't really need to do more than be able to halve contests if he's ever needed.
Hopefully our third stringer isn't ever needed. It's time to show faith in Heath. We've invested 3 years in his development. Time to show faith in him and make him Roma's deputy.

By all means grab another ruckman in the drafts, but let's make it a young, promising one, not another lower league spud who'll clog our list for a year and be discarded. Keeler can be our third stringer for now.

and here i was thinking my littlest one threw the biggest tantrums.....

basically says, haven't seen him play much, heard from a bloke that spoke to a bloke that knows a bloke....then spits the all time proverbial...

wow

Ive added your 2 into the choices. maanco

SANFL Magarey Medallist Harry Boyd at 198cm
or
Western Australian ruckman Lachlan Blakiston at 204cm
The 26-year-old, standing at 204cm, has been one of the dominant ruckman in the WAFL for East Fremantle averaging 16 disposals and 33 hitouts a match in 2024.

Longer. No wait. Hickey!

No list spots but it seems one may open if Crouch retires.. I still dont know if that allows us to grab another player now.. or we need to wait for mid-season draft?

I would prefer to put faith in Heath as back up for the first half season and if we get an injury or Heath has not improved, grab a ruck in the mid season draft

Highly doubt at this point that we end up with four rucks on the list. Even if two of them are young, I think we’re making do with what we’ve got now.

This season will be make or break for Heath. If he gets a go he needs to show something or he will be gone for sure, especially with Dodson in the wings.

Heath will be number 1 ruck at Sandy so no excuses.

Yep 3 rucks is enough, we've got blokes who can give a chop out as well. Heath is borderline a young ruck these days at 22, he'd want to show a bit this year as numero uno at Sandy, not saying I'd expect him to be knocking on the door for the #1 ruck spot against Ro, but should be showing a bit in the VFL now. The marking and forward craft is there at VFL level, needs to start throwing his 204cm frame around a bit more though.

Dodson will take awhile.
Heath is still young for a ruck.
Can’t see it being make or break for him this year.

When was the last time a ruck was drafted and almost played the next year or so?

I’d sort of exclude Luke Jackson because he was predominantly a forward because of Max Gawn.

Tim English played 2 games his first season and 7 in his second, from his third onwards he has been the Dogs number 1 ruckman.

Am I missing something that had an immediate impact?

The problem with off-season is supporters just get deranged.
Heath has more time up his sleeve if he continues to improve.
Dodson is a beanpole and will be nowhere near the big boy stuff for a long time.
If Brian is to be believed we will sign Boyd which may or may not offer us some depth but is not gonna be a game changer.

Agree.

Heath could not play a single AFL game and if he improves should still be on our list next year.

Literally only just turned 22.

Marshall played his first game at 23 (1 for the season)

Then played 12 the year after at 24

Finally becoming the main ruck at 25.

Recent AA squad rucks and when they established themselves:

Kreuzer: his 18 year old year
Jackson: his 19 year old year
Naitanui: his 19 year old year
English: his 21 year old year
Grundy: his 21 year old year
Darcy: his 22 year old year
Heath: next year he's 22
Marshall: his 23 year old year
Jacobs: his 23 year old year
Gawn: second half of his 23 year old year
Witts: his 24 year old year
Xerri: his 25 year old year
Cameron: his 26 year old year

Really no rule about it except that it can take a while and Heath is right in the middle of the pack if he was to establish himself now.

To even consider Boyd is comical IMO...Not one other club has gone within a bulls raw of Boyd, yet the Saints pony up and fly him over for a medical.

If we recruit Boyd that will be the end of my and my families 27 year membership. Its extreme I know but I am absolutely sick of our club attempting to fill ruckman holes with absolute spuds.
Did you say that when they recruited Cal Wilkie?

To me drafting Boyd...we might as well have kept Campbell.
But Boyd is untried so whatever.
Last thing in the universe i'd be burning a membership over.
Strange hill to die on, for sure.

I think it came down to TC having no future where he can meaningfully contribute to the senior squad. Boyd offers a possibility, albeit a slim one.

My problem with bringing in a Boyd or similar older ruck as backup to Marshall is that it hampers Heath's development.
If Boyd is the backup to Marshall he will need to be the number one at Sandy pushing Heath back into the part time role he had with Campbell there. If we are not going to trust a 22 year old to be the backup then we should have let him go and not promoted him to the Senior list.

It either hampers OR helps his development. Can't predict which way it will go yet. Hopefully the latter. If not, it's on Max. I don't care which one of the rucks works out as long as one of them does. Competition should bring out their best.
