Is Boydie gonna get a welcome to the Saints thread? 🧵 he’s official now is t he??????
It's not actually official yet.

The Herald Sun the Boyd signing and said the Saints would make it official before Christmas.

St Kilda has signed SANFL star Harry Boyd as its new back-up ruckman in a bid to support Rowan Marshall for next season.

The Saints have enlisted the 199cm workhorse under the league’s supplemental selection rules in a move expected to be formalised before Christmas.

I just finished watching Boyd play in the losing GF against Glenelg. He had a pretty decent game, there is no doubt he is good at his ruck craft, but he offers very little else. He is a big lump who has benefited by the rucking rule changes, he just stands on the line and steps into the opposing ruckmans run and blocks them with his size/strength. He never attempts to jump he just stands and fights for the fall of the ball space. He also uses those same strengths to snatch the ball out of the air and bang it forward, hence his clearance numbers. We know what happened when Marshall did that, it mostly ended up in a turn overs.

Whether he can do the same at the next level with bigger, stronger and smarter opponents is questionable. Opposition ruckman will either out muscle him or jump over him, and in open play he will struggle to stay with hard running opponents. Good ruckman are rare and very hard to find and I do prefer ruckman who can mark, run and contribute around the ground, hence my concerns re Boyd.

Ill concede as a basic ruckman (if ypu are happy with nothing else) he may be competitive, but he will offer zero around the ground. He is the complete opposite of the modern day athletic ruckman. If RTB can turn him into something great, but I still have my reservations.

The recruiters would have watched a lot more games, vision and had access to data of all the prospective recruits. Numerous posters have been quite forthright in their opinions of certain top 10 or 20 recruits. Strongly suggesting they dont want certain players for differing reasons, whats so outrageous or different with my suggesting I dont want another list filler?
He's taken list position 40 odd.. It's insurance & better to have some than none..There was a fella who played a game or two with similar attributes.. The one attribute that we don't value though & is underestimated is physical presence.. That player with similiar attributes.... Shane Mumford.. I'm led to believe his teammates walked just slightly taller with him on the ground..Nankervis (Richmond) is another example.. Back the club & back the player ...They've drafted a kid with talent so we've covered our bases as best as possible..

So was Tom Campbell. Guys happy to play as a back up ruck aren't usually star quality. If he can come in and hit a ball down if we need him in an emergency he'll be perfect. If we get even more out of him it's a massive bonus. Good sides should be able to carry a specialist ruck anyway. Our midfield is a lot more inside orientated with Macrae and even a full year out of Dow.

I remember TDK on radio before he was any good. Said he grew up idolising Riewoldt and followed the Saints. It would be nice to attract a Saints fan back to the club.

Will stay at the blues.

Don’t get your hopes up saints fans.
Our ex-backman who shall not be named went back to the club he supported as a kid.
Why not TDK?
Gotta keep the hope alive for a while 🤣

It’s the hope that kills ya 😂

I’m so tired of hoping the A grade gun comes to us.

Here’s hoping the list we’ve put together can get the job done.
St. kilda supporter…resilience is thy name 🤣

All a bit sensitive over at the TDK thread on the Draft Board .... mentioned that the Blues may dust off the brownpaper bags in order to keep TDK and the post got removed in under 30 secs .... wasn't appropriate apparently 😄
Interestingly allowed my response to your post. BTW you blokes don’t want Bailey Williams do you?

Does he come with a Harley?
Some of our board rate B Williams, I certainly don’t. You’re thinking a salary dump with Harley as a sweetener…

Bold.

How’s Harley’s mate from Bendigo Travaglia looking? Thought him and Barrat were outstanding picks.

I think Bailey has been doing an admirable job in the ruck, but he’s not really a ruck is he?

Weren’t you playing him forward for awhile?

Reckon he should go back.

Tries his guts out, no one can deny that but not his natural position. Hard for him to get a game forward when we've got Allen and Waterman, just picked up Shanahan and last year Archer Reid then also have Jack Williams developing nicely as a forward and second ruck option. KPD is probably the only spot for him long term in the best 22 but has never played there.
