Which team out of Adelaide, North and Hawthorn has the better youth? Part 2

We are missing Rankine, Thilthorpe, Pedlar, Murray and Worrell. Hard to really gauge where we are at.

Both clubs having their depth tested.

Hopefully Meek gets up for us. He has been huge both literally and figuratively for us.

Must say apart from Lewis we are getting closer to full strength now

Just him and Blanck who are our best 22 bookends IMO. Hopefully we'll have a bit more luck on the injury front in the second half of the season now that Sicily/Day are back in the 22.

Not even sure Blanck would be there the way Frost and Scrimshaw have stood up

Frost has been huge. Blanck would help release Weddle/Sicily in a more attacking role though.

Will be an interesting game to see where both clubs are at. Both have had a good 6 weeks (Adelaide 7 weeks).

Whatever happens at least we both know we are better than North
For sure.

Yeah. But we have such huge deficiencies in personnel in the midfield that it does make it hard to cover them all.
Rankine is the only huge loss from the midfield.

Pedlar should be, but hasn't been playing midfield hardly all year due to injury.

Schoenberg is back.

Point being more that even with Rankine, the quality just doesn't match the rest of the competition, yet.
Huh?

You were going on about all out outs impacting our midfield, but only Rankine has played significant minutes this year... & yeah, he is a gun!

Pedlar should be, but he's hardly played much midfield all year with injury & poor management.

Rest have nothing to do with our midfield.

I’d bet my account that the Hawks will have 7 or fewer wins in 2024 H&A.

Let’s do it.

Since I was the one arguing that we actually bottomed out in 2020 (rather than 2024) and I was called delusional, can I get in on this?

5 wins in 2020 is the current nadir - but with a shorter season - going lower than a 29% win rate means 6 wins in 2024.

6 or less wins - he's right
7 or more wins - we're right.

I look forward to revisiting this.

Delusional for thinking improvement is a guarantee when you’ve recruited reserves players just like last season. The bookies have you third favourite for the spoon but somehow I am a troll for suggesting stagnating or regressing is likely.

6.5 wins is a fine line for our bet. Happy to give you a COVID asterisk and drop it down from 7 for you.

I also look forward to revisiting.

Revisiting the above mid-season as promised. Only need 3 more wins in the last 12 rounds (and we have 1 less Blues troll). Tracking as I predicted - in terms of an 8-9 win season (which is just as well after 20+ years on Bigfooty, I don't bet on my account lightly).

Reserves players do seem to have improved us - as I said they would - after all - Massimo with 27 touches on the weekend, Ginnivan with 23 and a goal, Chol with 3 goals and great defensive work, Gunston with 4 and Meek with 40 hit outs.

Fully recognise we are far from the finished product, there will be more bumps in the road and these players won't have good games every week but they remain astute, value pick ups and Hawthorn are not significantly worse and "about to really bottom out in 2024" as some predicted.

(I guess I'm not so delusional after all)

Going early. I like the confidence.

Something tells me my prediction will be a little bit closer than “finals” and “14 wins” like some of your buddies, but time will tell.

I think winning 8 games and once again avoiding the elite end of the draft would be stupid, but good on the Hawkies for proving me and everyone else wrong by finishing just outside the bottom 4 9 years out from their last finals win. I will lose my account because of it so there’s that :p

2 games against Richmond and a game against North to come

Firstly, I am not "going early" - I said in an earlier post I would revisit mid-season.

Secondly, I never said 14 wins or finals (barely anyone did) - I said about 8 wins and was mocked and called delusional. You were adamant we would get significantly worse and I was an idiot for thinking 2020 would be our low point (when we won 5 games with a very senior team).

I also provided countless examples of "reserves" players having the capability to improve a team and was laughed at - but here we are.

Finally, I don't think being all time bad and stockpiling picks is a better result (yes, even long term) than winning games with a young team and having your pick a couple of spots lower. Developing talent, learning to win, attracting players, etc are all part of the improvement equation. I don't think many would prefer to be in North's position but again, time will tell.

We need to be able to to win with players missing.
On this point something I've been chuffed with for Hawthorn the past month. Go back 12 months and we were so disfunctional without Lewis and Sic. This year Sic has messed 2 in the last month and Lewis most if the season but we have managed. This is huge step forward for our group.

2 games against Richmond and a game against North to come
Based on recent form definitely a few winnable games coming up. The year to come:

Adelaide @ MCG
GWS @ UTAS
Richmond @ MCG
West Coast @ Optus
Geelong @ GMHBA
Freo @ UTAS
Collingwood @ MCG
Adelaide @ AO
GWS @ Canberra
Carlton @ MCG
Richmond @ MCG
North @ UTAS

Improvement was always a possibility even though I thought otherwise.

It was delusional to think it was guaranteed. There were some Hawks supporters that could not fathom stagnating or going backwards (which still could happen this year or over the next few years).

Time will indeed tell.
