Port Adelaide
Every year since the final 8 has been in use there has been at least two non-finalists from the previous year that have made it into the eight.

1994 Geelong, Collingwood, Footscray, Melbourne
1995 Brisbane Bears, Essendon, Richmond
1996 Hawthorn, Sydney, Western Bulldogs
1997 St Kilda, Adelaide
1998 Melbourne, Essendon
1999 Port Adelaide, Carlton, Brisbane Lions
2000 Geelong, Hawthorn, Melbourne
2001 Adelaide, Richmond, Sydney, Port Adelaide
2002 West Coast, Melbourne, Kangaroos, Collingwood
2003 Sydney, Fremantle, St Kilda
2004 Melbourne, Geelong
2005 Kangaroos, Adelaide
2006 Fremantle, Western Bulldogs, Collingwood
2007 Geelong, Port Adelaide, Kangaroos, Hawthorn
2008 Western Bulldogs, St Kilda
2009 Carlton, Brisbane Lions, Essendon

Not that it will definitely happen again, but which two teams are most likely to break into the eight?

Hawks for sure, hangover gone and hunger will be back
Eagles - good young list, i reckon they will be back in the 8 for quite some time

Hawks - they will shoot back into the eight.
Port - one eyed vote :) but i think we will improve on last year, and we only just missed out last year.
WCE are very likely too :D

I voted the Hawks and West Coast, but I think Sydney are a real chance and should be written off at your peril. Very good defensively, and have a very dangerous looking forward line setup this year.

Sydney and North.

whats so dangerous about sydney's forward line??

im not having a go at sydney, but i thought hall for bradshaw would balance things out.

besides being one-eyed, its the hawks and roos for mine.

I'd like to think the Eagles, but I still reckon we're a year off finals..

Hawks & North/Sydney (flip a coin) for mine.

Hawthorn have they sorted their defensive woes? They have Gibson. But you would have to like their chances.
North, do they have enough, same for Sydney?
West Coast maybe
Port Possibly.

I think Port will be very under estimated this year and will suprise and their 2006 class will take the next step up this season, eg Boak, Gray, Thomas, Pearce & Co.

So I will go Hawks and Port.

Sliders will be a good questions. Essendon, St Kilda for shock selection, I just reckon their zone will be worked out, Lovett with destroy team morale and they have a history of imploding after losing a GF :) Sry

The two WA sides this year. They are both hungry teams. Not saying that Sydney/Hawks wont make the 8 but i think them 2.

Hawks and North, but realistically there are about 6 teams vying for the last couple of spots.

Carlton and Essendon are the two clubs likely to slip out if new ones come in.

I voted the Hawks, I think they are certainties to get back into the 8. And Melbourne, just because. :D

Sydney and North the next most likely I think.

Haha, you talk up Freo like there's no tomorrow.

He does, but how is it any worse than the biased posts from 99% of Bigfooty posters. I agree it appears highly unlikely, but so did Hawthorn missing the 8, this time last year.

For me I think the Hawks will bounce back and Sydney will rise into the 8.

IMO the eagles are a little bit overrated on bigfooty, however time will tell.

Freo will improve from last year (can't really get much worse) but will miss the 8.

I believe the only change to the eight of 09 will be that Essondon will drop out and Hawthorn will sneak in.
Carlton despite losing Fev have a good midfield and could possibly retain their spot.

Hawthorn and West Coast would be my two, if I got a third it would be Sydney.

I don't see any of the others making the finals:

Melbourne are still too young to put it together over the whole season, I expect North and Richmond (expecially Richmond) to take some time to head in the direction their new coaches want. Fremantle under Harvey have just been terrible, they have some good young guys coming through but that isn't going ot be enough this season, and I predict Port are going to be giving everyone a run for the race to the wooden spoon.

Just the Hawks if their backline and rucks can stand up.

Eagles and the Roos have good young midfielders, but they're still too raw and inexperienced.

They'll need them to step up and give their forwards enough chances if they're to make the eight.

For Carlton, Mclean will more than offset the loss of Stevens and give us a harder edge in the middle.

The Swans replacing Hall with Bradshaw is hardly an upgrade on their playing stocks.

They've lost Jolly and O'loughlin, but gained Seaby and Mumford as their rucks.

Though Josh Kennedy could be a good and cheap get who would be suited to their midfield.

They might have a better chance if they had two Adam Goodes, one for their midfield and one for their forwardline.

I believe Sydney are usually conservative with their young players, so their improvement is going to have to come from Veszpremi, Meredith and Hanneberry.

I doubt that Lewis Johnstone will get more than a taste of football.
