All AFL journos are tainted by being small fish in a big pond.
None of them can really be impartial, or rage against the machine that is the AFL, because the AFL is their livelihood. And there isn't anything else that would pay as well. There is no fall back position for any of them.
Most conflicted journos in the world.

Seems our journalists have really poor relationships with most clubs so they are very hard to like. Stark contrast to the States where reporters like Adam Schefter are regarded very highly due to their diligence and respect when dealing with a story from say the NFL.

The social media era hasnt helped, as its usually who can get the bigger story out their the quickest.

Jon Ralph seems ok to me although i rarely read the papers these days.

I listened to Robbo today on the radio.. he basically referred to Ed.. saying yeah he's a good bloke but he stuffed up as well.. trying not only to divert attention away from himself.. but also to suggest to everyone that yeah he's a good bloke as well that stuffed up.

Fool.. who is he trying to kid.

Makes a lot of sense.

If I had a favourite it would Gerard Healy.

But they all shit me when someone effs up, like Robbo did. It's like watching the Sooners circling their wagons to form a protective wall.

I can't stand Gerrard Whately.

Dishonourable mentions to Gary Lyon, Barrett, Hutchi, Gerrard Healy, Stevo, Ralphy and Dwayne Russell (if he can even be classified as a journalist).

It speaks to the culture of AFL journalists atm that the majority of them are so dislikable.

Perhaps a more revealing thread would be AFL journalists that we actually like. A few that I like include Jake Nial, Greg Baum, Dr Turf and (shock/horror) Mark Robinson. I also liked Martin Flannagin although I'm not sure if he's still working. Also like KB but not sure if can be classified as journalist, professional troll might be more appropriate.

Speaking of Rage Against the Machine, I don't mind Rohan Connolly.

The reason we don't have many decent journalists in the AFL is that most of them believe they are reasons why people watch and listen to the footy.

Head, nail, hit!

Unfortunately too many of them want so desperately to be the centre of attention.

It's the sport, stupid.

That's what we are interested in. If they reported the news, and not try to create the news they would be more respected. If they didn't try to put the worst spin on everything they would be more respected.
If some of them had greater depth of knowledge they would be more respected.
If they reported with greater respect they would be more respected.

We know that Robbo has displayed numerous times a lower threshold of integrity than most.
C Wilson always talks about the worst in people never any love for the game.
Purple (Barrett) chases ambulances.
Patrick Smith, seems to hate all sports and all people, and particularly is a know all with a rudeness.
Greg Denham is rude to anyone that dares challenge him.
New try hard, Sam McLure so desperately wants to butt in all the time and sit at the grown ups table, puts the controversy spin on everything. Genuine pip squeak.
Rohan Connolly, granted loves the game, knows the history, but always always reverts every single thing back to himself, it's always about him.
Robert Walls permanent sniper.
Craig Hutchison, just a dreadful Up himself.... I better leave that alone. Nothing redeeming.

Middle of the road:
David King, needs better fitting suits, by I digress, try hard wanting so desperately to be important. not the worst.
KB, has incredible knowledge but can be stubborn and petty (leaving Richmond in a huff for nearly 20 years. Seriously holding a grudge that long?)
Also suspect KB just knows how to get click bait, often he's tongue in cheek with a quirky humour.
Dr Turf, can be very direct and honest so challenges thoughts, though suspect you wouldn't want to cross him. Also comes across as very fond of himself.

Who is left that is good? It's better to leave on a positive note.
Emma Quayle really knows her stuff and is invaluable reading during draft time.

Leigh Matthews, best ever for me. Cuts through, gets to the point. It's never about him, it's about the game. As dermie says, he has no natural predator.

I'm sure I've left out a few.
