Who is happy with what we got for Brent Prismall

Ah, no.

Particularly when the club themselves admit they could've done better.

We are talking about a player who is only 22 and forced his way into the best mid-field in the comp. Yes he's injured, but pick 39 is not the best we could do.

When? Where?

They said they thought he was worth more. I don't think they said they could've done better though.

I'll say it.

I have no more love for Brent Prismall. I'm not happy he chased bucks elsewhere when it was his turn to shine in our midfield. I'm won't be disappointed if the trade doesn't work out for him in the long run.

Bring on pick 39!

Let's be clear, it wasn't dollars, it was opportunity.

Does this sum up the thoughts of most:

"Not happy but being realistic I understand we did the best we could."

?

You have probably wrapped it up in one sentence , CE . Well sort of.

At first , I have to say I felt like we had be too soft and been done over by Essendon. Bastards , the screwed us. We should sent him to the draft.etc...

Then , I thought about it.

The last time I felt like that that was in the Colby trade . Bastards they have taken our Captain and what did they give us. Some hacky , green kid and a couple of draft picks. Of course we all know who came out ahead on that trade. Sure we only got a pick , a later pick than we wanted , a pick that late that all the obvious kids will be gone. But we got a pick and a pick is a chance , and chance is all we need.

Prismall was a player who showed promise , he showed he was of AFL standard and will probably play a heaps of games for the Dons. But for us he was always going to be another just another backup player because of the quality of Chapman , Ling and Bartel. Its happened before , when we let guys go that were too similar to Couch.

Its been stated that this is good draft and considering our record in good drafts I want another pick somwhere. Wells is as good as any draft expert , he gets some wrong but he gets most right. Have a look at our list and look at the guys we got past 30 in the good drafts. Chapman , Ling , Enright and Hogan are four guys we wouldn't have bar late picks. Sure , we would all like a pick as early as possible and but considering the value of picks this year , the lack of trades completed they have done the responsible thing and got what they could get. The sucked it up did the profesional thing and thats more than some have done.

The jury will now be out for a while. Look at it this way , we gave two first round picks for Ottens. (This year North couldn't even get one for McIntosh) Looks kind of costly but by this years ratings of picks. The players the Tigers got for thoses picks on our list would not have added what Ottens has.

Who knows in , 2 or 3 years we may be saying the Bombers are Bastards and I want vengence... but I suspect what we will be saying is the kid we picked is more valuable to us than Prismall would ever have been.

You make some good points Turbo.

At the time of the Colbert deal I was livid. I thought we had been screwed big time. History shows we weren't, but only because we can look back at the quality of players we received in return.

Here, I see a player that, in my view, will with about 80% certainty, play 100-150 games for Essendon now. The doubt, for mine, is about a 10-15% risk that he re-injures his knee and a 5-10% chance that he just isn't up to it.

Pick 39, according to the stats, has about a 40% chance of playing more than 45 games for us.

Just on simple mathematics and probabilities, I think we are playing against the odds here.

There is some chance pick 39 could turn out to be better than Prismall. I just think the odds are stacked against it.

We were shafted, we sent Brent to Essendon as a favour to Brent, but he was worth a pick in the twenties.
Without his ACL injury no doubt we would have been prepared to give up Pick 23. The reality is that we were never going to offer 23 and his current value, remembering his serious knee injury, is around the 3rd round mark. I believe once he gets back to full fitness this will turn out to be a brilliant trade for Essendon.

Why would it have been different?

Why would Essendon have offered any more than pick 39, with the knowledge that Geelong's alternative was getting nothing by losing him in the PSD?

Certainly our club doesn’t feel that way as we tried extraordinarily hard to retain him and apparently Balmy was really pissed off on SEN immediately after the trade ie in relation to what we got for him.

Also, the Bombers told him shortly after his surgery they were prepared to take him on knowing they may not get much out of him next year, such was there confidence in his long term value. Though Prisa said on radio tonight he may be back earlier than expected. His surgeon told him that if you are going to have a knee injury the one he had was the easiest to fix. Similar to Didak’s and he was playing in 6 months.

How it plays out, time will tell. But only an extreme optimist would suggest a 39 pick will prove to be a bonus for us. Ask Balmy!

Because his value would be around the 15-20 mark is he had not injured his knee and Pick 39 would be severely underpaying. Being only 22 is a great bonus for Essendon and he fits into the age group we wanted.

Thatnks CE Stats eh. , I worked a bit with stats and let me tell you theres lies , dam lies and stats.

Even if we just use the data as presented , a 2nd round pick has a 37% chance of a serviceable player. Less than a 3rd pick at 40%. Really 3 % is bugger all , so there is little difference based on this data.

If I go down to the shop and a six pack of beer is $12.99, I don't offer the shopkeeper $20 because that's what I think it is worth.

Essendon did exactly the right thing by paying just as much as they had to. It wouldn't have changed had there been no ACL. Prismall may have been worth more, but Essendon wouldn't have paid more.

Haha. So have I mate. Too much work with stats for my liking actually. ;)

That's true about the difference between 2nd and 3rd round. It's not as much as people would have you believe.

Though I maintain, that even had we got a 2nd round pick for Prismall, on average and on probabilities, we would have lost. We just would have done "better" than pick 39 (although not by much).

It really comes down to timing. If Carlton & Freo got off their high horses a little earlier then anoth dozen or so trades may've gone through. Unfortunatly everyone waits for the big deals to go through before they make their move.

I think a pick in the 20's would've been more appropriate and I think a few other clubs would be kicking themselves in hindsight. The Bombers have a got themselves a bargain there.

In saying that though, the Geelong Football Club should once again be proud in the way they have provided an opportunity for a player, starved of opportunities, to go to the club of his choice. King, Gardiner, Playfair & Callan have all been traded on very good terms and would've left the club knowing that GFC have done all that they could. Add Pris to the list and it goes to show the changing nature of our great club. No bad publicity, no airing of dirty laundryand no burning of bridges.

:thumbsu::thumbsu: Great point, actually. In the often heartless world of big-business sport, it's good to see there's a little bit of sentiment left.

Undecided if im happy.
With all of essendons young players that have debut in the past 2 season couldnt we have got one of them along with the 39?

i'm not happy but not outraged lets put it that way. I don't blame him for wanting to go but would have prefered him to stay.
I kinda think it was a bad trade but he has a bad knee till atleast mid next year so maybe it isn't too bad. An extra pick in the draft is good also plus we can't do anything now can we...

King was actually pretty pissed off Geelong opted to trade him instead of retaining him. He thought he deserved a contract.

When? Where?

They said they thought he was worth more. I don't think they said they could've done better though.

From the article on the GFC site, and a little grab with Balme I saw on C7, It was basically implied that they backed off from hard negotiations to guarantee Prismall got what he wanted; a spot @ Essendon.

As I mentioned in a previous post, this is not the first time. I remember in the last trading period that King, Gardener & Playfair were basically given away to make certain that they kept playing.

Now I'm not trying to be cold hearted and expecting the club to behave like a$$h01e$, but in the end, Balme, Wells and everyone else who's involved in list management, their primary responsibility is to the Geelong FC. If Essendon really wanted him, and it was clear that they did, then we could of, and should have, pushed a little harder. Essendon wouldn't have wanted to risk not getting him in the PS draft.

I'm happy we got more than nothing for him.

He played 15 of 22 games this year.
Seemingly doesn't want to do the hard yards to be a regular player and would rather go to a weak team in essendon.
I'm not going to get upset over losing a fringe player.

Im not happy with what we got.

I thought the club showed no balls in being aggressive and trying to get the best deal for the club. If melbourne or north melbourne offered more, then thats where he should have gone.

As for prismall, he has showed no guts and is looking for the easy ride. All he needed to do was come back strong after he reco and pushed for a spot and he would have got it. Instead he chose the option where he cruises into a team. TBH, we don't need someone who doesn't bleed blue and white. You will never get a cruisy game at Geelong, and I'm glad prissa has gotten out of the kitchen before it heats up in 09.
