List Mgmt. Who is playing for their careers in 2017?

Starting to take shape, time is running out for some unless there is a left field dramatic turnaround in form. My updated thoughts-

OOC 2017, delist- C.Beams, Freeman (possible trade?), Harwood, Jansen, Clayton, Hammelmann, Eagles, Grewar.

Look at trade options- Rich, Martin, Freeman?, Paparone + highly unlikely Bewick and Bell, who would have zero interest out there.[/QUOTE

Agree with all of that , the one who has surprised me is Hinge , with his size and clean skills I reckon he could make it at senior level. Looks like a better Mitch Golby

I am hopefull that we decide to pay out a couple of players so we aren't forced to move rocky for list spots. If we are to bring in cameron ( thats a big if) and keep robbo, rocky and close that leaves us with 5 picks in the draft. Still can't imagine us cutting the captain's brother to get 5 list spots. Would imagine barrett will be upgraded which leaves 4. Ballenden makes 3. Cameron makes 2. Which would only leave room for 2 picks, very unlikely.

There seems to be a lot of criticism aimed at Tom Bell. I know he has a broken leg now, but as has been mentioned, he has a contract for next year. Does anyone think he has struggled this year because he is being played out of position ?? He is super hard at it and has the body to really crash in, why isn't he played in a complete inside mid role, similar to what Clayton Oliver does for the Dees ?? His foot skills are obviously questionable when he gets the ball on the outside, but that is completely nulllified if he is just in winning the hardball. Crack in, win it at the feet of Stef Martin, and feed out sharp handballs. He has the tank to do it, and playing him on the flanks makes his weaknesses stand out more than they probably need to.
He doesn't crack in or should I say hasn't this year which is the knock on him

Unfortunately Tom looks like Tarzan and plays like Jane, his mindset is not suited to an inside role IMO.

Good players make their own luck. He has had long enough to cement his spot, but has failed. Not that I would be unhappy keeping him for depth. It is a cut-throat business & Harzy is expendable.
Thats the feeling I get too. Would rather keep harzy over bell but I am sure the "bell" will toll for him next year;)

Which in my opinion is because he is played out of position. Is that not a common line of thought ? In the NEAFL he seemed to be playing a half forward role in the games I watched. Using his size to win the footy on the inside and making his presence felt is his best natural attribute that he brings. He should be trying to utilise it as much as possible.

If he sorts that out and gets his mindset back, he is very capable. Playing for Morningside in the NEAFL, he was extremely damaging and had a very strong presence around the stoppage which is what got him rookie drafted in the first place. He hit hard, and hit to hurt.

Not out of position. Thats where he played his football at carlton. Half forward. Doesn't have the motivation or urgency to go get the footy or win it back

You can still tackle ( crack in) playing half forward. Your boys did it today against the weagles

Yeah I completely agree. I wonder if it's above the shoulders and he struggles with the structures and defensive side of the game? So ends up confused and thinking too much, and games end up drifting by without him having an impact. His see ball, get ball ability was elite before he was drafted.

It's a cut throat world in the AFL. There will be guys delisted to make way for youth & it has to happen. Harwood & beams have had their chances they're not going to make us better we just need to find better players or we won't rise up the ladder. It's unlucky for them as it might've been different if they were on a better list.

I heard there may be something in the Cameron rumours. But not really family reasons as has been said. Few whispers round adelaide there might be a Bit of disharmony in the crows team. Who knows can all change if you win a few finals together.

I think that after 8 seasons we are still having a conversation about Harwood being on the list next year says that he doesn't deserve to be there. If you haven't played yourself into a regular position by then (in a team that hasnt played finals your entire career) you deserve to be delisted imo.

I'd have Barrett on the list ahead of him for example which would make 5 delistings but only 4 live draft picks inside pick 44 needing to be used (ignoring potential of a trade for Cameron)

In terms of having mature bodies (if not experience) outside the team if you remove the 5 potential delistings this week we had bell, Robinson and Christensen out injured, then paparone, keays (3rd season next year), Dawson (4th season), Lyons (starting to show a bit and would be 3rd season on list) and Barrett (5th season on afl list next season).

The likes of Dawson, Lyons and paparone will need to be given some games next season to see if they are worth another contract. Not to mention wanting to see what cox, Allison, grewar and 3 top 20 draft picks can do next season as well.

I.e. I think Harwood (and bell and Bewick) are classic list cloggers, eminently replaceable and just not good enough to justify keeping around to 'protect' the kids.

Accept he hasn't been 'super hard at it'.

He should be. He is a big unit with a great tank. He should have beeen running to and through every contest. He wasn't.

And he didn't. Tom is a nice guy, but the suggestion he is to play the Mitch Robinson role and Mitch is always going to be first picked and he is now behind Matho and Berry too.

We need a big bodied mid, who I think will be Berry and we may draft another.

I have a feeling Tom's card had been marked and he wasnt tearing the NEAFL apart. I havent heard what the prognosis on the injury was other than a break with ligament damage but that could be 9 months before he even runs again.

I think he could of been on the block before the injury and I wonder if he might retire and hopefully the club puts him in a development role.
I think he is a good personality to have around the club. He is a pretty affable guy he would be good doing junior development and younger player support IMO. If he doesnt (retire), I hope he fights his way back, but I think he is coming from a really long way back with the improvement of the younger guys.

Unlucky from Rhino to get injured at the time he did this season. Was given a last chance to play as a small forward and his first game he looked good.
I'd agree with that. I wouldn't say that he deserves to be delisted but, with his career at the club, he can't really feel too hard done by if we decide to punt him. Put it this way, he has never really secured his spot.

The problem with a lot of these fringe guys is that they don't produce AFL standard footy every week. The odd game which shows them to be up to the required standard is often surrounded on either side by a couple of mediocre weeks. At some point, we have to accept that these guys shouldn't be judged on their best but rather on what they produced most often.

Right now, if you ignore contract status, Harwood wouldn't be my first choice to delist. But, a bit like Close, he happens to be the one we aren't committed to next year and, if we need list space, he's going to be in the gun unfortunately.

Updated list for offseason moves.

Rookies,

Delisted
;
Hanley
Eagles
William
is probably gone now after drink driving confirming a lack of discipline, bummer.
Hammelman may also get squeezed out, FA and draft will determine if he gets a permanent upgrade.

Another year

McInerney
Grewar
Hinge

Main List

Delisted

C. Beams, just doesnt offer enough athleticism or reliability for an 8 year player. gotta go.
Jansen, not a bad player but clearly just not AFL standard, has had the time and clean run without injuries to prove himself and is nowhere near the first 22.
Clayton, actually think he is a good footballer but once again nowhere near first 22 with players like Dawson and Allison already ahead of him. he will be replaced by a draft pick.

Who knows
Freeman and Close are anyones guess at this point. I think both could be delisted, both re-sign or one stay and one go. I think Michael Close is worth persisting with as a journeyman, hard running aerobic bigmen dont grow on trees.

Dead Weight with contracts,
Bell's career is over at AFL level but we will pay him next year to get his leg right and play NEAFL.
Bewick is a good clubman but should not be playing for us next year at AFL level. perfect NEAFL leader (Tim Notting NEAFL career ahead).
Walker is a frustrating player.. good bloke, tries hard but does really dumb things, goes cold or gets untimely injuries. Another who should only be depth.
Frost, Not sure whats going on here? We are paying him for another 2 seasons and I actually rate him. If fit is my choice to replace Gardiner but don't think he is reaching required standards at the moment.

New Deal
I like Harwood and think he has his place still.
Robertson is a no-brainer, Sign him up!
Rocky is the great unknown but obviously want him to re-sign for the right price.

As crazy as it sounds, and as wrong as it is - I am of the belief that.. as long as Dayne is on our list I feel like Claye will be. Call me crazy, but i cannot see us delisting him. I reckon the circumstances under which Dayne joined were he wanted to play with his Brother and it was a family connection to the club. They will argue Claye offers enough, he won't be going anywhere.

Gees I hope not.

Yep, a club should never and I'm sure we haven't put themselves in that sort of position.

Agree. And from that point of view the Lions have given the Beams boys every opportunity to play together, injury and talent have meant that they've played fewer games together than they might have liked but it was more than would have been if Dayne had stayed a pie.
