Below are the players looking down the barrel IMO:
Harwood
Clayton (Wish he was staying but think he's gone)
Jansen
Close (maybe traded rather than de-listed)
C.Beams
Bewick
Freeman
Eagles
William

There are probably a couple more but I think any more than 5-6 of these is too much change to the list in 1 year. There will be some lucky players that get 1 more chance (lets hope they grab their opportunity) and some who will be devastated for sure. Trade period is a very stressful time for a lot of footballers.

I went early to the game on Saturday and watched the entire NEAFL game. What interested me most was watching Noble and Fagan in the second coaches box watching the game and chatting till half time. They even stayed up there during the quarter time and half time breaks. Would love to have been a fly on the wall during some of those conversations.

Cultural shift sees most of these blokes on the outer.

That's seven from the senior list. It would make sense to trade as many as possible, rather than just delist them, but I guess that's easier said than done with players who are not regulars in the ones. GWS took De Boer and Mzungu from Fremantle last year, but only as rookies after they'd been delisted. As Nunez suggested, the WA clubs might be interested in Paparone. And both Freeman and Close might attract attention from Vic clubs looking for tall forwards. We will probably need 6 list spots if we're going to upgrade Barrett and Hammer and take 4 selections to the draft.

If we want to give him a bigger contract we do.

Players can be on any $$$ as a rookie, otherwise senior players would never be able to be demoted to the rookie list.

But why would we? I highly doubt he has a plethora of clubs banding down his door to acquire his services. I like Barrett but if we grab CC, and Bundy + Robbo are full fitness than he is depth next season. Not upgrading him is the better option for us next season in more ays than one.

Paperone is an interesting one. Possible trade value? And overtaken by others..?

Possibly one of the WA clubs but couldn't see much coming back. Late third rounder or more likely fourth. Has definitely been overtaken by others.

We don't need to upgrade Barrett.
That's good then. Means that we only to free up, say 5 spots, and 2 out of C Beams, Harwood and Bewick could survive. I realise Bewick is contracted, it's just that others on here have suggested him as under the pump. We'd have to trade him or put him on the rookie list to shift him off the senior list.

Which poses a genuine question from me re Claye. For memory he came from the rookie list - so can you go from the rookie list, to senior listed - back to a rookie list? In the one season you can when you are elevated but there would have been 5 years at least since he was. dlanod do you know?

Once a season is over a player's previously listed status doesn't really matter any more. So while Claye might have been on the rookie list, once he's been elevated to the senior list for a year at the end of that year he's got the same status as every other player on the senior list.

It's pretty rare for older players to get put on the rookie list of their original club, e.g. as part of re-signing. In fact I can't think of any examples.

Usually older players only get demoted to the rookie list when still contracted, in lieu of paying out and delisting the player to free up some salary cap .

There have been numerous Lions players that have gone from the primary to the rookie list in the Lions merged club's history including Albert Proud, Callum Bartlett, Bart McCulloch, Scott Ralph and Jackson Paine.
