Who is THE fastest player in the AFL.

One bloke who used to be lightning in a straight line was David Neitz. He was about 191cm and 98kg, not very quick off the mark but after that first 5m his top speed was deceptively fast. It's why he managed to injure so many opposing players in collisions. Glenn Archer was quoted as saying that knowing when Neitz was going to hit you at full pace in the back was the scariest part of his career.

I reckon when you're looking at top speeds, it would be someone tallish and built strongly through the core. Kouta was really fast too, as was Wayne Carey.

Pardon my French but do you morons even watch Footy? I know everyone seems to just mention players from their own club but Ballantyne and Hill haven't got a mention and they are lightning fast.

Dangerfield is probably the fastest and 2nd best player in the comp behind Ablett. The guy has it all.

Lewis Jetta would have to be right up there.

Have to agree re Hill, in a footy type distance at least. People bang on about Stanley's GF sprint but Hill had everyone in that field smashed completely for the first 50 odd metres.

As others have noted a 100m time in football is a pointless stat. If you want to consider relevant look at the first 20 metres and maybe upto 50 or 60 metres from a moving start.

In terms of Rioli there are numerous guys with his pace and more (Jetta was toying with him in the GF, even had a look back to see where he was) but, as someone noted his agility is a weapon.

Not a lot of love on here for Armfield either. No idea what he's like over a longer distance but very quick over 40 odd at least.

Hawthorn fans are the only people who believe Rioli would beat Jetta.
The rest of us however actually live in the real world.
I didn't say Rioli was faster? I said he managed to keep pace with Jetta whilst Jetta was running with the ball (as in the gap at the start of the chase was the same at the end and pretty much the same throughout).

dangerfield easily. only thing stopping him in a game is fatigue and inside the packs punishment, something that jetta does not endure. given an even playing field it's dangerfield all the way

Would love to see anybody try and catch Majak Daw when he's running down the ground, at full flight.

Then again, I'd love to see Majak Daw get a senior game before commenting... oh wait.

Yep, Dalgleish won the 120-metre race in 12.25 seconds.

Of course, he had a 7.25 metre handicap.

Oh, and his winning time was 12.57 secs. Not sure where the 12.25 came from.

No doubt he is an extremely fast runner. But when you are talking about the top athletes who actually train to run fast, you're entering a different world.

FWIW 12.57 off 7.25 equates to about a 13.37 120m.

Decent time, but not in the same class as the top guys.

Danyle Pearce would be up there, his rising star winning year he always ran with the ball and no one could touch him, difference now is he cant shake a tag. When he was drafted he held the records for the 20m sprint and agility test, since then I know Joel Wilkinson has broken Pearce's 20m sprint record

I know he might loose his pace due to injury but what about the Ranger from Sydney? Also Atley is pretty quick too.

Essendon has Dalgliesh, 120m in about 12 seconds. Dempsey is very under rated for pace.

Once again sticking to Essendon, I'm less ignorant there!!, pace on the footy field isn't easy to measure.

Davey looks the quickest at Essendon, however Dempsey is far quicker. Davey is exceptionally quick, pre knee op, in the first 5m. However, Dempsey gets to a much higher top speed with a much easier style.

Jetta and Rioli is a perfect case. Rioli is more agile than Jetta so he looks fast around the forward line than he actually is. Jetta runs with an amazing technique.

Using the grand final sprints and my experience having kids competing in high level athletics I'm going to rate the players across a few distances.

Best 100m-200m:

Dangerfield, Dalgliesh, Jetta, Stanley, Dempsey, Yarran, Atley, Rohan, Ahmad

Best 200m-400m:

Jetta, Dempsey, Steven Hill, Dalgliesh, Rohan, Dangerfield, McPharlin, Walker

Best 800m

Jetta, Steven Hill and his little brother at Hawthorn.

Over all I'd say that Lewis Jetta is the best allround runner Lewis Jetta, by a long way.

However, if I was to rate the best all round athlete I'd give that to Dangerfield because he's better over 100, can still run out the game in the midfield and has a much bigger body, and hence impact on a contest.
Even though he's not on any of the lists I gave earlier I'd have Crameri as second all round athlete because of being one of the better power lifters in the game, 190cm and very close to the list in all of the running categories.

OMG sorry, Nic Nat!!!

Alround athletes:

1. Dangerfield
2. Nic Nat (will be clear number 1 if he can further improve his endurance)
3. Crameri

If he can put a body and build endurance Stanley has to be a chance for this category too.

Honestly. I reckon Franklin would smash all of them over 400 to 800m.

Dane Swan is reportedly the strongest bloke at Collingwood, and would be in the quickest handful over short distances.

Zero endurance though.

Jetta is quick with the footy in hand and has a terrific time for repeat sprints, but he doesn't even own as many running and athletic categories as Lucas...

I can't find the categories that I've missed.

As Royal Eagle noted, there would be better alround athletes than Jetta. Got blitzed in the 2011 Grand Final sprint.

Yarran is quick on the park with his reaction times, awareness and smarts, but Dylan Buckley and Armfield would probably run a better 20 metre time and repeat sprint. Think they ran 2.83 seconds for 20 metres. Certain Hampson pulled out that time in testing at Carlton. Has run down Danyle Pearce and Shannon Byrnes.

Why would Crameri come in at three?

For footballers who aren't skinny like most runners, Judd, Andrew Walker, Carrazzo and Curnow are phenomenal gutrunners. Ed's not quick, but runs all day after he broke Adrian Gleeson's record around Princes Park. Sister's a runner too. Tom Bell is a beast who runs a 15 beep and an impressive 3 kilometre time trial.

It's all a wank if the likes of Watson, Josh Kennedy, Pendlebury, Mitchell and Mclean can win their own ball and run all day without slowing down.

Whitfield is a freak runner and a footballer.

I was talking about all round athletic ability, not football ability.

Oh and I totally forgot about Franklin. Complete freak. Another Essendon supporter was talking to David Myers one sponsors night about his 400m time. Myers said he ran a time of 51 in juniors, which is pretty bloody good for a junior. However, he said Franklin ran one in 49 seconds. Which is freakish for a kid. Lets not forget though that Bolt is 196cm too.
