Re: Who is the second biggest Victorian club.

According to Roy Morgan polling conducted on 09AUG2008 14% of Victorians barrack for Collingwood, followed by Essendon and Carlton at 12%. Hawthorn are 4th with 11%.

This is supported by official membership purchases where in 2008 only Collingwood, Essendon and Hawthorn had over 40K members for Vic clubs. Carlton barely fell short with 39K.

Richmond fans should be applauded for their loyalty and willingness to purchase memberships and put bums on seats, but despite thier fans passion they do not have the numbers to realistically be placed in the big 4 Vic clubs. Their most successfull on-field season in recent memory (2001) was followed by a membership total of around 28K the following season, this compares unfavourably with fellow Preliminary finalist Hawthorn's following years membership of 35K.
As much as I hate to say it, Essendon are clearly the second biggest team in Victoria, keeping ahead of Carlton despite no big signings and average on field performances. I think the premiership and the Buddy factor might temporarily bump Hawthorn into second place, but Essendon's "barracker" base is much larger.

You are confusing membership with support.

It is easier for hawthorn to sign memebers as they have a far better history of recent success.
If you are a 26 year old Richmond supporter, you have seen two, yes two, finals series in your lifetime. So, they need a little more convincing at times.

No other club in the AFL can come even close to two series in 26 years( other then recently added clubs).
To read a post on here having us sixth when "up and runing" is jsut plain wrong.

Re: Who is the second biggest Victorian club.

Yeah, I would definetly agree after looking at the stats.

There is daylight, both currently and historically, between Collingwood and the other of the "big 4".

Like F%^K, 10-15 years ago Essendon were the clear number 1 and the pies were nearly bankrupt. You guys a marginally ahead now, but I have no doubt Essendon has just as many (maybe more) fans, they just don't always turn up like the pies fans do. Most surveys i've ever seen show Essendon as having the most supporters. Games like Dream team, super coach also prove this, more competitors have Essendon as their selected club than any other.

A mere blip in the overall scheme of things.. you guys haven't even figured in the 3 most important attendance figures

Season Attendance Record: 1,247,391 Coll 2008

Grand Final Attendance Record: 121,696 Coll Vs Carl 1970

Home and Away Game Attendance Record: 99,346 Coll Vs Melb 1958

IIRC Essendon actually owned the first one until last year or the year before that, so we are clearly not that far behind

Yeah for a brief while off the back of the best season in your history at the start of the century.. doesn't bode well for the rest of the millenium :p

Re: Who is the second biggest Victorian club.

3. minus the buzz of an exceptional era, essendon is on a par with richmond and carlton and nowhere near Collingwood

Think we're going to have to agree to disagree on that "nowhere near" comment Chaz.

Only have to look at the 2004 and 2005 attendances when Collingwood missed the 8 which suggest otherwise.

It was 2005 that Collingwood drew on a perfect Sunday afternoon for club legend Nathan Buckleys 250th game, 26k against Fremantle.

Interesting stat to look at MCG and TD:

Collingwoods 5 lowest HOME attendances since 2000:
2001 v Fremantle Telstra Dome: 26,067
2005 v Fremantle MCG: 26,586
2004 v PA MCG: 27,226
2000 v West Coast Telstra Dome: 29,072
2002 v West Coast MCG: 29,348

Essendon 5 lowest HOME attendances since 2000:
2008 v PA Telstra Dome: 28,409
2001 v Fremantle Telstra Dome: 29,528
2006 v PA Telstra Dome: 29,232
2005 v Fremantle Telstra Dome: 30,383
2006 v West Coast Telstra Dome: 31,434

Carltons 5 lowest HOME attendances since 2000:
2005 v Fremantle MCG: 16,076
2006 v Fremantle Telstra Dome: 17,518
2005 v PA MCG: 16,371
2006 v PA Telstra Dome: 18,665
2002 v WB Telstra Dome: 22,938

In 2008 the Hearld Sun Survey and Roy Morgan Poll had Collingwood as Number No 1!

Essendon were bigger from 1996-2001 over taking collingwood in theclubs darkest day's.

But when the Pies started making finals and grand-finals from 2002-2008 Collingwood Quickly over took the mantle as Victoria's Most popular Club Fact!:thumbsu:

Re: Who is the second biggest Victorian club.

No, Essendons record was set in 1998, a season we fell into 8th spot.

But still sandwiched between 93 and 2000.. not as if you were struggling with Hird and Sheedy almost the equal of Reynolds and Coleman.. try 1 flag in 50 years and see how many attendance records you break.. fair enough we played in a dozen Grand Finals during that period but our supporters are freaks when you consider the lack of ultimate success

Re: Who is the second biggest Victorian club.

No, Essendons record was set in 1998, a season we fell into 8th spot.

Collingwood last year finished in 8the spot in the Home and away season and smashed the all-time home and away attendance record set by Collingwood in 2007 with 1,247,391.

Essendon's home and away attendance record stands at 1,169,551. And Essendon played more matches at the MCG then Collingwood!

Also Collingwood hold the all-time home attandence record with 651,345 that is an average of 59,213!

Essendon held the previous record of 630,399 average of 57,309!

Re: Who is the second biggest Victorian club.

You may be right, but I would think that the membership surge the Tigers received after signing Cuz indicates that the tiger faithfull will jump on at the slightest sign of improvement.

Are you seriously suggesting that the majority of Tiger fans are "bandwaggoners" who weren't convinced they were on the brink of success in 2001? In my mind 2002 was indicative of the true level of tiger support compared to other big Vic clubs-nearly 30% below Hawthorn despite equal on field results the previous year.

I'd suggest most tigers 'fans'/bandwaggoners need more than one year where everything goes right before they'll come out.

It's like how Hawthorns support didn't peak after '07...They'd had a good year, but the jury was still out about their chances.

Agree, you need a good 5-6 years of consistant top line football to increase attendance drastically ala Essendon in the 1990's

For example Richmond are already coming from a higher base then most (they drew around about 4-5,000 more then us to home games when both sides were really poor) meaning POTENTIALLY they could increase attendance considerably - like Hawthorn ATM - surpassing and becoming a truely massive drawing club again with sustained improvement on the field.

That said, they wouldn't want to waste another 5-10 years would they?

Re: Who is the second biggest Victorian club.

Hird actually had foot stress fractures at that time and missed quite alot of football while Sheedy was nearly sacked at the end of 1998. We had missed the finals in '97 and '94 after the 1993 flag and were in debt.

Hardly struggling in comparison to Collingwood or Richmond but we werent exactly flying either.

It's not about one year in isolation.. you were coming off a very successful decade in the 80's.. you had Hird and Sheedy.. you'd won a flag in the 90's.. and the baby Bombers were enormously appealing among the media and fans.. we on the other hand were going through our darkest hour.. you can't compare the two.. it takes your absolute best in a century to beat our worst

Sorry, this is the "magpie army" we`re talking about.

How on earth could Essendon be allowed to get even close let alone over take the enormous "magpie army" that every pie fans and his dog shoves down our throat who no club comes close to?

Re: Who is the second biggest Victorian club.

With the way your club is heading, will be interesting to see the drop off in the Bomber Bandwagon.

Seeing as though we won't be finishing in the bottom four for the foreseeable future and given we've missed the finals for what is it now - four years running and managed to break our membership record this year - I don't think there's going to be a drop in membership at all.
